~115 km surface to the Jaipur airport feeder and into the DTDC International facility (~+0.5 day vs Udaipur direct); air movement to a US gateway via Mumbai or Delhi — JFK, Newark, LAX, SFO or ORD.
US customs (CBP).
Clearance at the gateway airport. CBP and the FDA/USDA flag food, dairy, plant and seed material aggressively — paperwork-clean parcels typically clear within 24–72 hours.

A 2 kg parcel — say a Shekhawati-haveli care kit (sarees, sweets-replaced-by-clothing, signed family papers), ~30 × 25 × 15 cm:

- + fuel surcharge (~25%)≈ ₹700
- + GST 18%≈ ₹630

What you’ll need at pickup.
Customs paperwork is the most common reason an international parcel stalls. We’ll walk you through it before pickup so it doesn’t.
KYC of the sender
One photo ID for the person whose name is on the AWB — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. We photograph it at pickup; not stored beyond DTDC’s record.
Commercial invoice with HS codes
For B2B parcels, a printed commercial invoice listing items, quantity, value and HS codes — CBP scrutinises this. For personal gifts (Shekhawati-Marwari family care kits and ancestral-haveli letters), a written declaration suffices but value still must be honestly stated.
Prescription (medicines)
For tablets going to a student or family member: a copy of the prescription with doctor’s registration number. The FDA controlled-substance list is strict — no injectables, no liquids, no scheduled drugs.
What the United States doesn’t let in.
These are real CBP, FDA and USDA rules — not our caution. Items shipped against them are seized, destroyed, or returned at the consignee’s cost. Hemp/CBD policy varies state-to-state but the federal courier policy is strict; assume it’s blocked.
Don’t even try
- All dairy products — paneer, ghee, khoya-based mithai, milk powder. FDA seizes even sealed factory packs.
- All meat products — including dried, sealed and packaged. USDA rules are absolute.
- Fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds, untreated plants — USDA APHIS biosecurity flags these on entry.
- Hemp and CBD products — federal courier policy is strict regardless of state law at destination.
- Cuban cigars and tobacco from sanctioned origins — embargo rules.
- Live animals, insects, reptiles — never on a courier.
- Aerosols, lithium batteries above 100 Wh, all liquids — universal courier rules.
Allowed with care
- Textiles and handicrafts — block-print fabric, cotton clothing, papier-mâché. Declare a fair value.
- Books and printed material — straightforward; declare title and value.
- Prescription tablets — sealed strip, original prescription attached, no controlled substances or liquids.
- Non-precious jewellery and small electronics — declare make, model, value.
- Sealed dry foods that are commercially packaged — strictly excluding dairy, meat, fresh produce. Even then, declare ingredients honestly; the FDA may still hold.

Shekhawati-Marwari NRI-family care kits
The defining lane characteristic. Sikar district is the ancestral home of India's biggest business families — Birla, Goenka, Singhania, Poddar, Khaitan — and the global Marwari diaspora maintains active ties with ancestral haveli families. Care kits move both ways: village-to-NYC (homemade textiles, family papers, festival outfits) and NYC-to-village (US-bought gifts for elderly relatives). High-value, document-heavy parcels.
Marwari business documents
USA-resident Shekhawati-Marwari business families exchange contracts, GST forms, attested letters and signed agreements with ancestral villages and Jaipur/Mumbai trading offices. Always express, tracked.
Wedding & festival outfits
Sarees, lehengas, sherwanis, dupattas, jewellery boxes (non-precious). Shipped ahead of weddings to Indian-American Marwari families clustered in NJ, NY, TX, IL — these are the families who funded the Shekhawati frescoes generations ago.
Diwali parcels (non-food)
Diyas, decorations, pooja items. No agarbatti — most US apartment fire codes flag incense as a hazard. No flowers, no food.
Personal documents
Passport originals, transcripts (often for WES evaluation), signed contracts, certified copies. Always express.
Shekhawati-haveli tourism returns
US art-historians, heritage-tourists and academics visiting the painted havelis at Mandawa, Nawalgarh, Fatehpur, Bissau and Dundlod often buy more than they can carry. We pick up from the haveli-hotel, pack (no organic material), and ship before they fly out.

I'm a Shekhawati-Marwari family in the US — what's the right way to send a care parcel to my ancestral haveli, or receive one?
Care kits between Sikar/Jhunjhunu villages and US-resident Marwari families are one of our most regular lanes — Birla / Goenka / Singhania / Poddar / Khaitan-extended-family connections, and many less-famous merchant-family threads. From Sikar, send: family textiles, festival outfits, signed-and-attested family papers, non-food gifts, photographs and printed matter. Skip: sweets (FDA dairy block), pickles (liquid), and anything wooden. From the US side toward the village, similar rules — receiving family in the haveli will sign on Canada Post / USPS-equivalent at the doorstep. We co-ordinate WA updates with both ends.
Can my US-resident relative ship things from a Shekhawati heritage tour back home?
Yes — this is a common lane. Heritage-tourists (often US-based academics, art-historians, photographers) visiting Mandawa, Nawalgarh, Fatehpur and Dundlod buy more textiles, miniature paintings, brass items and books than fit in their suitcase. We pick up from the haveli-hotel directly, pack to airline standards (no organic material — no straw, no untreated wood, no dried plants), document item-by-item with declared values, and ship before they fly. CBP clears clean tourist consignments without trouble.
Why does the USA seize sealed Indian sweets and ghee-based mithai?
The FDA and USDA classify dairy as a high-risk import — bovine disease, ingredient labelling, processing standards. Even ghee-based mithai in sealed factory packs is treated as a dairy product. CBP at JFK and LAX in particular sees thousands of these parcels and is consistent: seized and destroyed. Send textiles, jewellery and non-food gifts instead.
