What you’ll need at pickup.
Italian customs (Agenzia delle Dogane) clears EU TARIC paperwork efficiently — but Italian-bureaucracy-style sometimes adds 1–2 days for verification. Get the Codice Fiscale right and the parcel moves.
KYC of the sender
One photo ID for the person whose name is on the AWB — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. We photograph it at pickup; not stored beyond DTDC’s record.
Commercial invoice
For commercial goods, a printed invoice with item, HS code, quantity and value. Recipient Partita IVA for B2B; personal recipient needs Codice Fiscale (Italian tax code). For gifts and tourist-baggage, a written declaration with stated value.
Prescription (medicines)
Sealed tablets only, with a copy of the doctor’s prescription and registration number. AIFA rules apply — no controlled substances, no liquid medicines, no injectables.
What Italy doesn’t let in.
These are real Agenzia delle Dogane and EU TARIC rules — not our caution. Items shipped against them are seized, and the consignee usually pays a disposal fee.
Don’t even try
- Counterfeit luxury goods — Italy is home to Gucci, Prada, Versace, Armani, Bulgari. Anti-counterfeit cooperation with Dogane is among the strictest in the EU.
- Weapons and weapon-replicas — Italian law is strict; even decorative swords, kirpans and ornamental knives get flagged.
- Drug paraphernalia — pipes, scales, grow-kits and similar are blocked.
- Mafia-glorifying media — rare flag, but it exists in the inspection criteria.
- Ivory and CITES-listed products — strictly enforced.
- Aerosols, perfumes, lithium >100 Wh — universal courier restriction.
Allowed with care
- Textiles and sarees — block-print, silk, lehengas. Italy’s fashion-import customs handles non-counterfeit textiles cleanly.
- Books and printed material — any topic; Italian art-historians order Shekhawati-fresco-art books in volume; declare title and value.
- Sealed dry sweets — declare allergens; gluten is flagged especially in Italian labelling rules.
- Prescription tablets — sealed strip, doctor’s prescription, EU Rx-equivalent.
- Non-precious jewellery — declare ‘silver-plated brass’ or ‘costume jewellery’ explicitly to differentiate from precious.
- Photographic prints, painted-haveli reproductions, papier-mâché — Italian heritage-tourists buy these in volume from Shekhawati. Declare make and value.
Italian heritage-tourist baggage, Marwari-NRI gifts, wedding outfits.
Italian heritage-tourist returning-traveller baggage
The headline lane: Italian art-historians, fresco-photographers and Renaissance-restoration enthusiasts are among the heaviest demographics at the Shekhawati frescoed havelis — Mandawa, Nawalgarh, Lakshmangarh, Fatehpur. Their professional cultural-art-history training makes Shekhawati a serious destination, not just a tourist stop. Many ship their purchases home rather than carry on the flight: art-history books, painted-haveli reproductions, papier-mâché, block-print textiles, brass curios, photographic prints. We pick up from the heritage-hotel reception, pack and document, ship before they fly.
Shekhawati-Marwari NRI-family gifts
Italy hosts a small but established Indian-business community across Rome, Milan and Naples. Sikar-origin gift parcels — sarees, sealed sweets, kitchenware, festival items — go to these households.
Marwari B2B documents
Commercial invoices, sample dispatch papers to Marwari traders in Milan-Buenos Aires-Quartiere fashion district.
Wedding outfits
Lehengas, sherwanis, dupattas to Shekhawati-Marwari NRI weddings in Italy. Always express.
Diwali parcels
Sealed dry sweets (allergens declared per Italian labelling), diyas, decorations to Marwari-NRI households. Ship by mid-October to land in time.
Po-Valley Sikh-Italian care kits
The Punjabi-Sikh agricultural community works dairy farms across the Po Valley (Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna). Care kits — books, sealed dry snacks, festival items — go to these rural addresses regularly.
Student care kits
Books, sealed dry snacks, kitchen tools to Politecnico di Milano, Sapienza Rome and Bologna.
AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.
The moment the parcel is booked into DTDC International, we send you the AWB number on WhatsApp. Type it into the public tracker at dtdc.in any time. When delivery happens we forward the POD — signed slip or photo — within the hour.
Asked most often.
Why are Italian tourists such a big demographic at Shekhawati frescoes?
Italian cultural-art-history training is unusually deep — Renaissance, Roman, Byzantine. Italians arriving at Mandawa or Nawalgarh recognise fresco technique fast: lime-plaster preparation, pigment mineralogy, layered narrative composition. The Shekhawati havelis are a serious destination for Italian art-historians, fresco-restoration specialists and Renaissance-trained photographers, not just sightseers. They tend to spend longer, buy more art-history books and reproductions, and ship purchases home through us rather than carry on the flight back to Rome / Milan / Florence. We have the heritage-hotel pickup routine down to muscle memory.
We run a Mandawa or Nawalgarh heritage hotel — can you pick up Italian tourist baggage directly?
Yes, this is one of our regular Sikar-region lanes. We come to the hotel reception, weigh and pack on site, complete the customs declaration, photograph the contents and the tourist’s passport for KYC, and dispatch the same day. The tourist usually flies out before the parcel even reaches Rome-FCO. POD goes to both the tourist and the hotel concierge.
How does Italy customs efficiency compare to France or Germany?
Slightly slower. Italian Dogane is competent and fair, but bureaucracy-style — verification rounds happen, occasional letters request the same paperwork twice, and a parcel that would clear Frankfurt in 24 hours might take 48–72 in Rome or Milan. We quote 7–9 working days express to be straight with you. With a clean commercial invoice and Codice Fiscale, parcels rarely actually fail clearance — they just take a day or two longer.
