What you’ll need at pickup.
Dutch customs (Belastingdienst Douane) at Schiphol is among the fastest in the EU. Get the invoice, KvK and CITES paperwork right at pickup and parcels move through quickly.
KYC of the sender
One photo ID for the person whose name is on the AWB — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. We photograph it at pickup; not stored beyond DTDC’s record.
Commercial invoice
For commercial goods, a printed invoice with item, HS code, quantity, value AND wood-species declaration (Sheesham/Indian-rosewood is CITES Appendix-II — fumigation/treatment certificate required). Recipient KvK (Chamber of Commerce) number for B2B (auction houses, design-trade); personal recipient needs BSN.
Antique-replica declaration
Dutch interior-designers value Jodhpur Sheesham antique-craft — but our products are REPLICAS, NOT genuine antiques. Declare clearly as ‘decorative wooden replica, year of manufacture (current)’. Misdeclaring as antique attracts entirely different paperwork.
What the Netherlands doesn’t let in.
These are real Belastingdienst Douane and EU TARIC rules — not our caution. Items shipped against them are seized, and the consignee usually pays a disposal fee.
Don’t even try
- Untreated wood without phytosanitary certificate — Sheesham (Indian rosewood) is CITES Appendix-II. Furniture-replica accessories need fumigation/heat-treatment certificates.
- Genuine antiques without provenance — Dutch heritage-import rules require age/origin documentation; Belastingdienst cross-checks. Replicas are fine — declare them as such.
- Soft drugs and drug paraphernalia — the Netherlands paradox: cannabis is decriminalised in coffee-shops but PARCELS are zero-tolerance. Pipes, scales, grow-kits, cannabis seeds, CBD oil — all blocked at parcel level.
- Hard drugs — penalties are severe; never attempt.
- Counterfeit goods — luxury and branded counterfeits are seized.
- Pornography of certain categories — flagged at parcel level.
- Weapons and weapon-replicas — even decorative swords and kirpans get flagged.
- Ivory and CITES-listed products — strictly enforced.
- Aerosols, perfumes, lithium >100 Wh — universal courier restriction.
Allowed with care
- Antique-replica decorative arts (Sheesham, mango-wood) — the lane characteristic. CITES + fumigation paperwork at pickup, declared as replica with current year of manufacture, clears Schiphol cleanly.
- Brass and metal handicraft — Dutch art-trade actively appreciates Indian decorative arts. Declare ‘brass decorative item, hand-finished’ with weight and value.
- Leather goods (Jodhpur tradition) — vegetable-tanned only; declare tanning method on the invoice. Synthetic-tanned attracts EU REACH chemical-testing flag.
- Papier-mâché and carved decorative — Dutch art-trade values these; declare make and value.
- Textiles (Jodhpur block-print + bandhani) — declare a fair value.
- Books, sealed dry sweets, prescription tablets — standard EU rules.
- Non-precious jewellery — declare make and value clearly.
Antique-furniture-replica B2B (the dominant lane), handicraft, leather.
Antique-furniture-replica B2B (DOMINANT LANE)
Dutch interior-designers value Jodhpur Sheesham antique-craft — Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht auction houses, plus the Dutch art-trade, are major buyers. On consumer courier we ship: replica decorative-arts (boxes, mirror-frames, small carved panels, brass-inlay accessories, sample chair-arms and design-proof pieces). Full antique-replica furniture moves on dedicated air-cargo / sea-freight to Rotterdam port — ask about our referral. EVERY antique-replica shipment needs CITES + fumigation certificates and explicit ‘replica, current-year manufacture’ on the invoice.
Decorative arts (Amsterdam art-trade)
Amsterdam art-trade actively appreciates Indian decorative arts — carved wooden screens (small lots), hand-painted papier-mâché trays, decorative panels, hand-painted boxes ship to Amsterdam dealers and design boutiques regularly.
Leather goods (Jodhpur tradition)
Vegetable-tanned leather goods — bags, mojaris, bound notebooks, decorative leather accessories. Declare tanning method explicitly; synthetic-tanned attracts EU REACH testing flag.
Brass and metal handicraft B2B
Brass platters, decorative trays, candle stands, hand-finished metal accessories to Dutch art-trade and gift-shop chains.
Wedding outfits & textiles
Jodhpur block-print, bandhani dupattas, lehengas, sherwanis to Indian-Dutch families and the large Surinamese-Indian community in Rotterdam-Zuid and Den Haag. Always express.
Marwari B2B documents
Commercial invoices, sample dispatch papers to the Marwari wholesale presence in Amsterdam-De Pijp.
Business documents
Commercial invoices, signed contracts, sample dispatch papers and design-proof photos for Amsterdam/Rotterdam furniture-trade buyers.

Asked most often.
Can I send full antique-replica furniture from Jodhpur to an Amsterdam auction house via courier?
Not on consumer courier — full furniture pieces are too dimension-heavy for DTDC and would price out at uncompetitive volumetric. Those move on dedicated air-cargo or sea-freight to Rotterdam port (one of Europe’s biggest), and we have a referral chain into the Boranada-furniture-cluster export-houses that handle full container loads. What DTDC International handles for this lane is the SUPPORTING shipments: decorative-arts replicas, brass-inlay accessories, sample design-proofs, swatch books, fabric samples for upholstery, marketing materials and contracts. Those clear Schiphol cleanly with KvK, commercial invoice and CITES + fumigation paperwork.
How fast does Schiphol clear a clean wood-content parcel?
Among the fastest in the EU when paperwork is right. Amsterdam-Schiphol is one of Europe’s biggest air-freight hubs and Belastingdienst Douane has the staffing, technology and process to clear clean parcels in 24–48 hours. The Dutch system also plays well with EU TARIC and EORI cross-checking. The flip side: wood-content shipments get a closer look — CITES paperwork and ISPM-15 fumigation stamps must be visible on the packaging. We work with registered Boranada-cluster fumigation units; without those certificates we don’t ship Jodhpur wood-replica decorative-arts at all.
Surinamese-Indian community in Rotterdam — what kind of parcels?
The Surinamese-Indian community (descended from Indian indentured labourers who went to Suriname, then migrated to the Netherlands) is large in Rotterdam-Zuid and Den Haag. Parcels from Jodhpur Marwari families to this community are mostly cultural — wedding outfits (Jodhpur bandhani, block-print), festival clothing, sealed dry sweets (allergens declared), Hindi/Bhojpuri religious books, decorative items for Diwali and Holi. Care kits to elderly relatives are common. Standard EU Rx and food-allergen rules apply.
