What you’ll need at pickup.
Customs paperwork is the most common reason an international parcel stalls. We’ll walk you through it before pickup so it doesn’t.
KYC of the sender
One photo ID for the person whose name is on the AWB — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. We photograph it at pickup; not stored beyond DTDC’s record.
Commercial invoice
For commercial goods, a printed invoice listing items, quantity and value. For gifts, a written declaration suffices but value still must be stated. Portugal is in the EU — items above €150 attract VAT and possible duty under TARIC.
Recipient NIF / NIPC
The recipient’s NIF (Portuguese tax number) on the invoice helps Autoridade Tributária clear the parcel quickly; for B2B, the NIPC is required. Medicines fall under INFARMED regulation — prescription copy mandatory.
What Portugal doesn’t let in.
Portugal is in the EU and follows TARIC rules. Despite Portugal’s decriminalisation of personal-use drug possession, courier networks have a strict zero-tolerance policy. These are real Portuguese Customs and INFARMED rules, not our caution.
Don’t even try
- Drugs and narcotics — Portugal decriminalised personal-use possession but courier and import rules are zero-tolerance. No exceptions.
- Weapons, replicas, knives — including air pistols, decorative swords and martial-arts items.
- Aerosols and pressurised containers — universal courier rule on the air leg.
- Lithium batteries above 100 Wh — restricted on the air leg.
- Counterfeit goods — fake-branded apparel and electronics are seized at Lisbon.
- CITES-listed wildlife items — ivory, certain skins, shahtoosh, rare-wood handicrafts without permit.
- Goa-Portuguese-era heritage items — colonial-period artefacts, ecclesiastical items and old Goan-Portuguese documents may be reviewed; declare carefully and have a clear provenance note.
Allowed with care
- Textiles, sarees, block-print fabric, papier-mâché — declare a fair value.
- Books and printed material — any topic; Portuguese-translated Indian material is welcomed (the Goa–Portugal connection means Portuguese readers especially appreciate this).
- Sealed dry sweets and namkeen (factory-packed) — declare ingredients and allergens; fine in small personal quantities, no homemade food.
- Prescription tablets — sealed strip, doctor’s prescription, no injectables, no controlled substances.
- Non-precious jewellery — declare make and value; no gold bars or unhallmarked precious metals.
- Small electronics — phones, headphones, smartwatches; declare make, model, value.
Gem-trade samples, Goan-Portuguese diaspora, B2B handicraft.
Gem-trade non-precious samples to Lisbon Marwari merchants
Jaipur’s coloured-stone trade has small but settled contacts in Lisbon’s Marwari merchant circuit. Non-precious / semi-precious sample lots, beads, costume-jewellery components — declared honestly with item-level values; gold and unhallmarked precious metals stay out of the parcel.
Block-print B2B to Lisbon design boutiques
Sanganer and Bagru block-print fabric, dohars, cushion covers, table linen — shipped to Lisbon and Porto design-shop boutiques. Declare titles, fibre content and a fair value.
Wedding outfits to Goan-Portuguese-Indian families
Sarees, lehengas, sherwanis, dupattas — and equally the formal Catholic-style outfits for the church-side service in Goan-Catholic-Hindu fusion weddings. Goan-Portuguese fusion weddings have their own rhythm, and outfits are often shipped weeks ahead to families in Lisbon-Lumiar and Olivais.
Indian-Portuguese diaspora gifts
Lisbon (Lumiar, Olivais), Porto, Coimbra — anchored by the historic Goa-Portugal connection with a large Goan-Portuguese community, plus a growing Indian-IT cohort across Lisbon and Porto. Sweets, sarees, kids’ clothes, festival hampers.
Student care kits
Universidade de Lisboa, Universidade do Porto, NOVA Lisboa — Indian students on engineering and management tracks. Books, sealed snacks, kitchen tools (no wood), festival clothing.
Business documents
Commercial papers, signed contracts, certified copies. Always express; tracked international document is faster and safer than registered post.
Diwali parcels
Diyas, decorations, pooja items, dry sweets in factory packs. Recommend express to land before the festival.
AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.
The moment the parcel is booked into DTDC International, we send you the AWB number on WhatsApp. Type it into the public tracker at dtdc.in any time. When delivery happens we forward the POD — signed slip or photo — within the hour.
Asked most often.
We ship gem-trade samples — does Lisbon clear them smoothly?
Yes, with two caveats. Only non-precious / semi-precious items below restricted-export thresholds go via DTDC International — anything that needs Assay-Hallmark or GJEPC documentation routes formally. Declare each lot clearly (e.g. ‘50 ct rough garnet, sample, $X’) with fair declared value; Portuguese Customs at Lisbon read invoices carefully on small heavy parcels. Marwari merchant contacts in Lisbon usually have an NIF on file which speeds clearance.
Why does Portugal take 7–10 days when northern EU is 5–7?
Portugal is on the western edge of the EU, and DTDC’s air movement usually trans-ships through a northern hub — Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Madrid — before the leg into Lisbon. That extra hop adds a working day or two. Customs at Lisbon are efficient (24–72 hours typical), so the time goes into the routing, not the clearance. Plan for 7–10 days express; surface economy is 10–15 days.
I have family in Lumiar — is delivery there straightforward?
Yes. Lisbon-Lumiar and Olivais are weekly destinations on this lane — the Goan-Portuguese community there is well-established and last-mile delivery to apartment addresses is routine. Make sure the invoice has a Portuguese-format mobile number and the apartment / floor / door number; that detail is what saves a re-attempt when the courier finds the building entrance locked.
