Japanese customs.
Clearance at NRT Narita / HND Haneda Tokyo or KIX Osaka-Kansai. Japan Customs (Zeikan) is efficient — paperwork-clean parcels typically clear within 24–48 hours.

A 2 kg parcel — say block-print stoles plus a folded saree, ~30 × 25 × 10 cm:

What you’ll need at pickup.
Customs paperwork is the most common reason an international parcel stalls. We’ll walk you through it before pickup so it doesn’t.
KYC of the sender
One photo ID for the person whose name is on the AWB — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. We photograph it at pickup; not stored beyond DTDC’s record.
Commercial invoice
For commercial goods — gem-trade non-precious samples, block-print B2B, jewellery — a printed invoice listing items, quantity and value. For gifts, a written declaration suffices but value still must be stated. The recipient’s residence card (Zairyu Card) number speeds clearance.
Prescription (medicines)
For tablets going to a student or family member: a copy of the prescription with the doctor’s registration number. MHLW reviews medicines; sealed strips, name matching the recipient’s Zairyu Card. No injectables, no liquid medicines.
What Japan doesn’t let in.
Japan Customs (Zeikan) is efficient but strict. Plant and animal quarantine (MAFF) is among the toughest in the world. These are real Japanese rules — not our caution. Items shipped against them are seized, destroyed, and may incur a disposal fee billed to the consignee.
Don’t even try
- Meat & meat products — extremely strict. Even sealed dry meat snacks and jerky are routinely rejected at MAFF inspection.
- Dairy products — fresh paneer, ghee, khoya-mithai, raw milk products. Some packaged exemptions exist; assume seized.
- Fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds, plants — MAFF is uncompromising. Even decorative dried flowers and untreated wooden items get flagged.
- Live animals, insects, biological samples — quarantine clearance required.
- Narcotic-precursor chemicals & certain cosmetics — some ingredients banned under Japanese pharmaceutical law.
- Liquids and aerosols of any kind — universal courier rule.
- Lithium batteries above 100 Wh — restricted on air leg.
Allowed with care
- Textiles & sarees — Jaipuri block-print fabric, cotton clothing, lehengas, sherwanis. Declare a fair value.
- Books and printed material — any language including Japanese-translated Indian materials. Declare title and value.
- Sealed dry vegetarian sweets — declare every ingredient. Milk-based mithai may be flagged; choose besan ladoo / dry-fruit barfi over kalakand.
- Tablets with prescription — sealed strip, doctor’s prescription, name matching the Zairyu Card. No injectables.
- Non-precious jewellery, small electronics — Jaipur jewellery trade ships only non-precious / costume / silver-plated; precious gems and gold need a separate exporter route.
- Buddhist-spiritual & cultural materials — declare honestly; India-Japan Buddhist exchange is a recognised cultural channel.

Gem-trade non-precious samples
Jaipur is India’s gem-trade capital. Non-precious samples — cubic zirconia, costume-grade stones, silver-plated mounts — go to the Tokyo Indian-merchant community for B2B review. Precious stones and gold need a separate exporter route.
Block-print B2B to Tokyo / Yokohama
Sanganeri / Bagru block-print bedsheets, dupattas, stoles to Tokyo and Yokohama design boutiques — Japanese aesthetic appreciation for handcraft makes this a recurring lane. Commercial invoice with HS codes and item-level values.
Wedding outfits to Indian-Japanese families
Sarees, lehengas, sherwanis shipped ahead of weddings in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka. Non-precious jewellery boxes go in the same parcel.
Diwali parcels (vegetarian, sealed, MAFF-strict)
Diyas, decorations, sealed dry mithai. No agarbatti made of untreated bamboo, no fresh ghee, no flowers. Express in to land before the festival.
Buddhist-spiritual & cultural materials
India-Japan Buddhist-cultural-exchange is historic. Scriptures, prayer beads, non-organic ritual items to Japanese-Buddhist temple connections. Declare honestly.
Student care kits
University of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Tohoku — small but growing Indian-student community. Books, sealed dry snacks, kitchen tools, festival clothing.
Business documents
Contracts, agency agreements, signed paperwork to Tokyo Indian-merchant association hubs. Always express; tracked international document beats registered post.

Can I ship loose precious gems from Jaipur to a Tokyo buyer?
No — courier networks don’t carry loose precious stones or gold beyond a token declared value. Jaipur’s gem-trade does ship non-precious samples — CZ, costume-grade synthetics, silver-plated mounts — through us routinely; for actual coloured gemstones, emeralds, kundan, the trade uses a licensed gem-export route with separate documentation. Ask us; we’ll point you to the right channel.
Can I ship Diwali mithai to my family in Tokyo?
Vegetarian, sealed, no fresh dairy. Besan ladoo, dry-fruit barfi, kaju katli from a factory pack will usually clear; ghee-laden kalakand or fresh paneer-based sweets get flagged at MAFF. Declare every ingredient on the invoice — we list each item by name. Express in early; Diwali parcels arriving on the day are tight if customs picks the parcel for inspection.
How can transit be only 6–9 days for somewhere this far?
Two reasons. One — DTDC moves the parcel via Delhi (Jaipur’s closest air gateway, ~280 km) or Mumbai onto direct cargo capacity to NRT, HND or KIX, and Japanese ground last-mile is fast and reliable. Two — Japan Customs is unusually efficient at clearing paperwork-clean parcels. The lane is fast because Japan’s side runs well, not because the air leg is short.
