02 — How this lane runs

Pickup across Bengaluru, the Shiradi ghat descent, delivery across coastal Udupi.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

Sixty to ninety minutes in the core city. Malleshwaram, Rajajinagar, Jayanagar and Basavanagudi are fast runs; Hebbal, Yelahanka and the Marathahalli–Whitefield side need a 2-hour window. The rider brings tape, wrap and a weighing scale, and the box is sealed at your address before it moves.

STEP

Bengaluru sortation.

Collected parcels reach DTDC’s Bengaluru facility the same evening. Coastal Karnataka freight consolidates overnight with the wider Mangaluru-side trunk, so a booking made before the evening cut-off makes that night’s movement.

STEP

Over the Western Ghats.

The road line-haul runs Hassan–Sakleshpur and descends the Shiradi ghat on NH75 to reach the coast, then turns north on NH66 to Udupi. Shiradi is the single most weather-sensitive stretch on this route — it is a steep ghat section with a long history of monsoon damage and repair-related restrictions, and when it is constrained, freight is diverted via Charmadi or the longer Mangaluru approach. Express avoids all of it on the air leg.

STEP

Udupi delivery.

Last-mile off the coastal hub. Udupi town, Manipal and the immediate 576xxx belt are next-day off the hub. Malpe, Kaup, Brahmavar and Karkala are on daily runs. Kundapura and the northern Udupi-district pins toward Byndoor usually take a working day more.

03 — Rate band on this lane

Starting rates, Bangalore → Udupi.

Billed on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater, plus the fuel surcharge in force on the day you book. GST is extra.

  • Standard parcel (surface) from ₹120 / kg 2–3 working days. Min billable 5 kg.
  • Express parcel (air) from ₹180 / kg 1–2 working days. Door delivery.
  • Bulk consignment (35 kg+) from ₹120 / kg Min 35 kg. Surface routing.

Pickup is free across Bengaluru on this lane for parcels 5 kg and above. Volumetric formula: (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000 — this is what catches student trunks and bedding cartons at the start of a Manipal semester, where the box is enormous and the contents weigh nothing. From June to August, when the coast takes the full force of the monsoon, express is worth the difference.

04 — What goes Bangalore → Udupi

Parcels for Manipal students, restaurant-trade supplies, and coastal families.

Parcels for students at Manipal

The biggest single category on this lane by a distance. Manipal sits a few kilometres from Udupi town and its campuses pull students from across India, a very large number of them with family in Bengaluru. What moves: bedding and mattress toppers at the start of a semester, textbooks and lab material, a laptop or a printer, clothes, medicines, dry snacks from home, and the mid-year care package. Students ship the other way too, at semester end. Hostel addressing has rules — the FAQ below is specific about them.

Supplies and equipment for the Udupi hotel trade

Udupi families built a very large share of Bengaluru’s restaurant and darshini business, and the link between the two cities is a working commercial one rather than a nostalgic one. Small kitchen equipment, service ware, packaging, printed menus, uniforms and branded material move from Bengaluru suppliers to Udupi-side kitchens and back. Regular senders run this on a bulk rate slot at 35 kg and above with a fixed pickup window.

Temple-town and festival material

Udupi is a temple town built around the Krishna Matha, and its ritual calendar generates real parcel traffic — puja articles, brass and copper vessels, silk and ceremonial cloth, printed invitations and programme material, particularly around the Paryaya changeover that the mathas observe every two years in January. Metal vessels need real packing; tell us what is in the box and we will build for it.

Household and appliance shipments home

Coastal Karnataka families with someone working in Bengaluru send things home constantly — a mixer, an induction plate, a router, a fan, a boxed monitor, curtains and furnishings bought here because the range is wider. Original packaging plus the invoice inside the carton is the right way to send an appliance on surface.

Documents for banks and cooperative institutions

Udupi has an unusually deep banking history for a town its size — more than one nationally significant bank was founded here in the early twentieth century, and the district still has a dense network of banking and cooperative institutions. Signed originals, loan files, audit papers and KYC documents move on express with the recipient’s mobile on the AWB. If a date is attached, tell us and we will book the air leg the same evening.

Relocation part-loads to the coast

People moving back from Bengaluru to Udupi rarely need a full truck. They need the awkward remainder sent — books, a desk lamp, kitchen kit, tools, framed pictures, a monitor. Bulk surface handles this well and comes in well under airline excess baggage or a dedicated vehicle for the same volume.

05 — What you cannot send

A short, real list.

Prohibited on DTDC and on every air-network carrier. The second card is what we genuinely see attempted on Bengaluru → Udupi — a lot of it is parents packing for a student, which has its own recognisable set of mistakes:

Banned outright

  • Liquids in any form, sealed bottles included
  • Aerosols, deodorant cans and pressurised containers
  • Perfume and alcohol-based fragrance
  • Matches, lighters, camphor and incense oils
  • Cash, gold, silver and jewellery
  • Live plants, saplings, seeds with soil

Common Bengaluru → Udupi misjudgements

  • Ghee, coconut oil and home-made oil-based food — the classic parcel-from-home mistake on this lane. A tin of ghee or a bottle of oil packed among a student’s things is a liquid, it leaks under stacking pressure, and it takes the whole consignment with it. Dry podi, sealed chutney powder, packaged happala and sandige are all fine; anything with oil standing in it is not.
  • Power banks, loose cells and extension boards with batteries — extremely common in student parcels out of a tech city. A battery inside a laptop is accepted on surface. A spare cell, a loose power bank, or a battery-integrated device above 100 Wh on the air leg is refused. Tell us at booking what electronics are in the box.
  • Induction cooktops, immersion rods and hostel cooking gear — not a courier prohibition as such, and we will carry them, but worth flagging: most Manipal-area hostels restrict cooking appliances in rooms, and a parcel that the hostel office declines to hand over becomes a return at your cost. Check with the student before you pack it.
  • Home-made wet food and fresh produce — curries, wet chutney, fresh jackfruit or mango. The coastal humidity and a two-to-three-day surface leg finish these off. Send dry, sealed and shelf-stable, or do not send it.
  • Medicines, unless properly packed — sealed strips in original packaging with a legible prescription and an invoice can usually go on surface; loose tablets, syrups and anything requiring refrigeration cannot. Ask us before you pack a student’s medical kit.
06 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.

The AWB reaches you on WhatsApp the moment the parcel is booked into DTDC, and it is live on the public tracker at dtdc.in from that point. Delivery proof comes back within the hour. Two things specific to this destination: hostel and campus deliveries around Manipal are handed in at a hostel office, security point or parcel counter rather than at a room door, so the student’s own mobile number on the AWB is what actually completes the delivery; and for the outlying Udupi-district pins toward Kundapura, Karkala and Byndoor the rider will normally call before setting out, because those runs are planned around who picks up the phone. An unanswered call there becomes a second attempt the following working day.

07 — Three questions about this lane

Specific to Bangalore → Udupi.

How should I address a parcel to a student hostel in Manipal?

Student’s full name, then their mobile number, then hostel block and room number, then the institution name, then the pin code. Get the block right — the campus area is large, the hostel blocks are numerous, and “Manipal” on its own is not an address. Parcels there are received at a hostel office or parcel counter rather than at the room, so the student has to be reachable by phone to collect; put their number on the AWB, not yours. If you are sending at the start of a semester, expect the counter to be busy and allow an extra day. And send the student a photo of the AWB number so they can track it themselves instead of calling you every morning.

Will the Shiradi ghat or monsoon rain delay a parcel to Udupi?

It genuinely can, and on this lane it is the main variable. Road freight from Bengaluru to coastal Karnataka descends the Western Ghats through the Shiradi ghat on the Hassan–Sakleshpur stretch, a steep section with a long record of monsoon damage and repair-driven restrictions. When it is closed or restricted, freight diverts through Charmadi or takes the longer approach via Mangaluru, and the surface leg picks up a day or more. Layer on the fact that the Udupi coast takes some of the heaviest rainfall in the country between June and August and you should plan on the upper end of the 2–3 day band through those months. Express flies the leg and is unaffected by the ghat, which is the honest reason to pay for it in monsoon and not otherwise.

Can I send home-cooked food to someone in Udupi or Manipal?

Dry, sealed and shelf-stable only. Chutney powder, sambar podi, packaged sweets, happala and sandige, roasted snacks and factory-sealed savouries all travel fine on this lane and make up a good share of the parcels we book on it. What does not travel: ghee, coconut oil, anything wet, anything fried and still oily, and fresh produce. Two to three days in transit plus coastal humidity at the far end is unforgiving, and a leaking oil container will get the entire consignment pulled at sortation rather than just the food. Pack the dry items in airtight containers, tape the lids, and put them inside a separate poly bag before they go in the carton with clothes or books.
