A 1.5 kg parcel — say a hardware prototype and its printed documentation for a Bangkok buyer, about 25 × 20 × 15 cm:

What you’ll need at pickup.
Thailand is an easy country to ship to and an easy one to get slightly wrong, because the value threshold below which a parcel passes without duty is genuinely low. Describing the goods honestly is what keeps it simple.
KYC of the sender
A single photo ID for the person named on the AWB: Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. Photographed at pickup, and not held by us beyond what DTDC's own record requires. For company consignments we take the GSTIN as well.
Commercial invoice with HS codes
Required for samples, stock and any B2B movement. Thai Customs works to a low duty-free value threshold on imported parcels, so most business shipments are assessed rather than released untouched, and the assessment is only as good as your invoice. Line items, quantity, unit value, HS codes.
Consignee details that actually work
A Thai mobile number is close to mandatory for last mile, and a company tax ID on the invoice speeds a business clearance noticeably. Thai addresses run house number, moo or soi, road, sub-district, district, province and a five-digit postcode — give us the whole thing, transliterated, rather than an abbreviated version.
What Thailand doesn’t let in — and what it won’t let out.
Thailand is relaxed in reputation and firm in law, and the gap between the two is where senders get caught. These are Thai statutes, not our caution, and the person receiving the parcel carries the consequence.
Don’t even try
- E-cigarettes, vapes, pods and refills — importing them into Thailand is illegal and possession is a criminal matter. This is not a customs formality; it is a prosecutable offence for the person the parcel is addressed to.
- Anything critical of the Thai monarchy — the lèse-majesté law is one of the strictest in the world and applies to foreign-published books and academic texts too. Printed material of that kind will be seized and can create real trouble for the consignee.
- Controlled drugs — trafficking penalties are severe up to and including death. Nothing ambiguous belongs in this parcel, and prescription medicine needs the paperwork described above.
- Obscene material — banned outright, and defined broadly.
- Counterfeit branded goods and pirated media — routinely seized.
- Alcohol and tobacco by courier — not acceptable on this service.
- Aerosols, liquids, lithium cells above 100 Wh — air-safety rules that apply everywhere and end the parcel just the same.
Allowed with care — and one export note
- Silk sarees, textiles and garment samples — routine cargo. Declare item, quantity and a fair unit value; Thai assessment is value-driven so a fictional number causes more trouble than a real one.
- Filter coffee powder and sealed dry snacks — factory-packed, ingredients printed. Food falls under Thai FDA oversight, so keep personal quantities modest and describe it plainly as food for personal consumption. Commercial food imports are a different exercise entirely and need the importer's registration.
- Sandalwood soap and powder — fine as manufactured goods. The oil is a liquid and is not.
- Hardware samples, dev boards and laptops — declare make, model and value. Batteries installed inside the device, never loose.
- Books, documents and printed material — straightforward apart from the monarchy exception above.
- Buddha images — mind the return leg. Thailand restricts the export of Buddha images, images of deities and antiques, which generally require a licence from the Fine Arts Department. If someone in Bangkok is planning to send an image back to you in Bengaluru, that is the rule that stops it — and it stops it at the Thai end, not ours.
A business lane first, a family lane second.
This is not a diaspora corridor in the way Singapore and Malaysia are. Bengaluru to Bangkok is mostly work — samples, sourcing, trade meetings and the paperwork that follows them — with a thinner but steady seam of family and religious traffic behind it.
Samples for buyers and manufacturers
Electronics, components, packaging mockups and product prototypes going from Koramangala, HSR Layout, Peenya and the Whitefield hardware units to Thai buyers and contract manufacturers. Bangkok is a serious manufacturing hub and the sample-then-order cycle runs on it. Commercial invoice with HS codes, and tell us the meeting date so the routing serves it.
Trade-fair and exhibition material
Bangkok hosts a heavy calendar of trade shows, and Bengaluru exhibitors send catalogues, display samples and collateral ahead of themselves rather than fighting airline baggage. Send it two weeks early, not two days — exhibition material stuck in clearance is worth nothing on the third day of a four-day show.
Buddhist religious items
Bengaluru has a long-established Theravada Buddhist presence around Gandhinagar and the Maha Bodhi institutions, with genuine links to Thai monastic circles. Printed scripture, robes, non-organic ritual items and devotional books travel both ways. Note the Thai export licence rule on Buddha images before anything comes back the other direction.
Documents and contracts
Signed agreements, invoices, apostilled corporate papers and shipping documents between Bengaluru companies and their Thai counterparties. Always express, always tracked, and worth naming the deadline at booking.
Family parcels to Bangkok
Bangkok's Indian community sits mostly around Phahurat and Silom, and Bengaluru households with relatives or postings there send the predictable things: filter coffee powder, sealed murukku and mixture, festival clothing, a saree for an occasion. Modest quantities, sealed and labelled.

Bengaluru professionals on extended Thai postings, and people who have moved and want the rest of their belongings sent on. Books, clothing, a monitor, kitchen kit. Can my friend in Bangkok send me a Buddha statue back to Bangalore?
Usually not without a licence, and this surprises people every time. Thailand restricts the export of Buddha images, images of deities and antiques, and moving one out of the country generally requires permission from the Fine Arts Department. It is a Thai export control, so it applies at their end regardless of which courier is used or how small the piece is — a souvenir-shop item is not automatically exempt. Amulets and small devotional objects sit in a grey area that depends on the piece. The practical advice is to have the sender in Thailand ask the shop or the department before packing it, because a parcel stopped on export takes far longer to resolve than one stopped on import. Going the other way, from Bengaluru into Thailand, Indian devotional and Buddhist items are not the problem.
I need a product sample with a Bangkok buyer before a meeting. How tight can this run?
Five to seven working days door-to-door on express is the honest band and we would rather you plan to it than gamble against it. Bengaluru helps at the front of the journey — the parcel goes out through Kempegowda rather than spending a day reaching Mumbai first — but the variable that decides your week is Thai clearance, not the flight. Two things make it fast: a commercial invoice with real line items, quantities, unit values and HS codes, and the buyer's Thai company tax ID printed on it. Two things make it slow: a vague description like "samples" and a value that looks invented. Tell us the meeting date at booking and we will route for it and flag it if the timeline is not realistic.
Is it true that vapes are illegal in Thailand? Someone asked me to send one.
It is true, and please do not. Thailand banned the import of e-cigarettes and vaping devices years ago and enforces it — possession is a criminal matter, not a customs technicality, and in a courier shipment the person holding the item at the end is your friend in Bangkok, not you. Pods, refills, coils and accessories all count. Tourists are stopped over this regularly, so there is nothing hypothetical about it. We will not book one, and if we find one at pickup we will take it out and explain why. If your friend genuinely needs something sending, ordinary consumer electronics, clothing and sealed food are all straightforward.
