Send a parcel from Bangalore to Salem. We pick up free.
About 205 kilometres straight down NH44 through Hosur, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri — the shortest lane we run from Bengaluru into Tamil Nadu, at 1–2 working days on DTDC surface and the same 1–2 by express. Pickup anywhere in Bengaluru is free at 5 kg and above, and the Hosur Road side of the city — Electronic City, Sarjapur Road, HSR Layout, JP Nagar, Banashankari — is where most of this lane starts.
Pickup across Bengaluru, one straight highway run, delivery across Salem district.
Pickup, Bengaluru.
Within about an hour and a half of your call across the core city. The natural catchment for Salem is everything on the Hosur Road side — Electronic City, HSR Layout, Sarjapur Road, JP Nagar and Banashankari — and those collections are usually the fastest of our day because the rider is already pointed at the right highway. North and west Bengaluru bookings need a two-hour window. Tape, bubble wrap and a luggage scale come with the rider; the parcel is sealed at your address.
Bengaluru sortation.
Handed into DTDC’s Bengaluru facility the same evening. Salem sits on the main southbound trunk out of Bengaluru rather than on a branch feeder, which is the structural reason a 205 km lane behaves so consistently: it is not waiting for a connection anywhere.
NH44 line-haul.
South through Hosur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and the Toppur descent into Salem. Four-lane highway end to end, no ghat crossing, no seasonal closure. It is the shortest intercity distance of any lane we publish from Bengaluru into Tamil Nadu, and in practice a parcel collected in the evening is on the Salem hub floor before the next working day starts.
Salem delivery.
Last-mile off the Salem hub across the 636xxx pin series — Fairlands, Hasthampatti, Suramangalam, Ammapet, Kondalampatti and the steel and SIDCO estates on the Omalur side. Industrial consignees have goods-inward hours and a gate register; give us a stores contact. Namakkal, Attur, Mettur, Omalur and the Yercaud hill road are separate runs — see the FAQ.
POD on WhatsApp.
Once delivered we forward the proof of delivery — signature image, stamped inward slip or photo — on WhatsApp within the hour. On a lane this short the POD often reaches you before you have got round to asking where the parcel is.

Pickup is free across Bengaluru on this lane for parcels 5 kg and above. Volumetric formula: (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000. Worth understanding on this lane specifically: it carries a lot of dense metal, and dense metal never loses to volumetric — a shoebox of stainless coupons or turned components is billed on its real weight, so a small parcel can be a heavy bill. The formula only overtakes actual weight when the box is large and light, which here means the handloom and dhoti consignments, not the steel.
Steel samples, workshop spares, handloom, sago and student parcels.
Stainless-steel samples and trade paperwork
Salem is a stainless-steel town — the SAIL plant sits there and a whole trading and fabrication ecosystem has grown around it. What runs out of Bengaluru is the small end of that business: sample coupons, test pieces, mill test certificates, signed purchase orders, drawings and gauges going to buyers and fabricators. Small, dense, heavier than they look, and usually wanted the next morning. Wrap sharp-edged coupons before they go in the box or they will cut their way out.
Machine-shop and auto-component spares
The Hosur–Krishnagiri stretch of NH44 is one long manufacturing corridor and Salem is the far end of it, so components move up and down this road constantly. Bearings, fasteners, jigs, gauges, tool inserts, a repaired motor going back to the customer. Under 10 kg, urgent, and usually against a line that is stopped. Book it in the evening and it is at the works next day — but drain anything with oil in it first, as the list below explains.
Salem cotton, dhotis and handloom consignments
Salem has a long weaving trade in cotton and silk-cotton, and Bengaluru retailers, wedding buyers and small online sellers deal with it directly. Bolts of cloth, dhoti and angavastram lots, sample sets and finished orders travel this lane in both directions. Cloth is the one thing on this route where volumetric weight actually decides the bill, because a bale is enormous and weighs very little — send us the packed dimensions before you agree a rate.
Sago, dry provisions and trade samples
Salem is the centre of India’s sago and tapioca-starch trade, and the sample and small-lot traffic that goes with it — sealed packs of javvarisi, starch grades, dry provision samples for a Bengaluru distributor or a food manufacturer’s quality lab — is a genuine part of this lane. All of it is fine as long as it stays dry and sealed. Nothing wet, nothing in oil, nothing that needs to stay cold.
Student parcels to the Salem colleges
Sona College of Technology, the Government College of Engineering, the medical and arts colleges around the city, and the schools in the Yercaud belt all keep hostels full of students whose families or elder siblings are in Bengaluru. Laptops, project components, lab manuals, bedding, a cycle helmet, sports kit, and the reverse flow of everything at semester end. Put the student’s own mobile on the AWB — hostel offices will not accept a parcel they cannot phone in.
Family parcels for Salem and Namakkal households
A large number of Salem, Namakkal and Attur families have someone working in Bengaluru, and 205 km is close enough that the parcel habit is weekly rather than seasonal. Prescription medicines in their strips with the pharmacy bill, a replacement phone, festival clothes before Pongal, school books, documents needing a physical signature. Regular senders should ask us for a standing pickup slot instead of calling each time.
A short, real list.
Nothing in the first list moves on DTDC or any air-linked network, in any packaging. Below it are the refusals we actually see on Bengaluru → Salem bookings, which on a metal-and-farmland lane are their own particular set:
Banned outright
- Liquids of any kind — oils, coolants, syrups, perfumes
- Aerosols and pressurised cans
- Flammable liquids, thinners, paints and adhesives
- Corrosive chemicals, acids and pickling solutions
- Currency notes, gold and silver bullion
- Fresh fruit, vegetables and any perishable farm produce
Common Bengaluru → Salem misjudgements
- Fresh mangoes — every single May and June, without fail. The Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri belt is mango country and people want to send a box in either direction. Fresh fruit is perishable and is not accepted on any courier network: it ripens in transit, it weeps, and it arrives as a liability. Dried mango, sealed mango pulp in a commercial pack with an invoice, and sealed dry snacks are a different conversation — ask us before you buy.
- Cutting oil, coolant and grease inside returned parts — a pump, gearbox or spindle sent back for repair with fluid still in it is a liquid consignment however it is wrapped, and it will be refused. Drain it, degrease it, plug the ports and seal it in a bag inside the carton. Prepped properly the same part ships without a question.
- Rust-remover sprays, WD-type cans and touch-up paint — machine shops pack these in with the spare as a courtesy to the receiver. They are pressurised flammable aerosols and they will fail the counter check on their own, and take the rest of the consignment down with them. Send the part alone.
- Loose steel offcuts and unwrapped sharp stock — not a ban, a packing standard. Bare coupons, cut sections and threaded stock will saw through carton in transit and damage whatever they sit against. Edge-wrap them, put them in heavy double-wall or a small crate, and tell us at pickup so we bring the right material.
- Ghee-soaked sweets and homemade halwa — the dry sweets and murukku that go home before Pongal are fine. A tin with ghee pooling in the bottom is not: it stains, it leaks, and it gets pulled at the counter. The practical test is whether it leaves an oil mark on paper after an hour.
AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.
Your AWB number reaches you on WhatsApp as soon as the parcel is booked into DTDC. Type it into the public tracker at dtdc.in any time. When it is delivered we forward the POD — signed slip, photo or stamped gate inward slip — within the hour. Two Salem-specific notes. On such a short lane the tracker often shows a booking scan and then a delivery scan with almost nothing between them, because there are barely any intermediate handling points on a straight 205 km trunk run; a quiet tracker here is a fast parcel, not a stuck one. And on industrial deliveries into the Omalur road estates and the steel-trade addresses, put the stores contact’s mobile on the AWB rather than the office landline, and tell us the goods-inward window — those gates close well before the offices do, and a parcel that misses the window comes back for a second attempt the next working day.
Specific to Bangalore → Salem.
Can I send a box of mangoes between Bangalore and Salem in season?
No, and we get asked this every May. The Salem–Dharmapuri–Krishnagiri belt is one of the country’s big mango regions, the season is short, and the instinct to put a box on a courier is completely understandable — but fresh fruit is a perishable and no courier network accepts it. It ripens and sweats inside a sealed carton over a day or two in transit, the box collapses, and everything travelling alongside it is damaged. What we can move is the processed and sealed version: commercially packed pulp with an invoice, dried mango, sealed jam or preserve from a manufacturer. If you are planning to send something fruit-related, ask us before you buy it rather than after it is packed.
Do you deliver to Namakkal, Yercaud, Mettur and Attur on a Salem booking?
All of them are served, but they are not the Salem city run. Salem itself is the 636xxx pin series delivered off the Salem hub. Namakkal sits in its own 637xxx series and Attur, Mettur, Omalur and Sankagiri are worked by branch vehicles on their own schedule — expect a working day on top. Yercaud is the one that needs planning: it is a hill station reached by a hairpin ghat road above Salem and it is served on a limited-frequency run rather than daily, so anything going up there should be booked with a couple of days of slack. Give us the exact six-digit pin when you book and we will tell you which of those applies.
My parcel is small but heavy — how will steel samples and machine parts be charged?
On actual weight, almost certainly. Billing is on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater, with volumetric being (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000. Dense metal never loses that comparison: a small carton of stainless coupons, turned components or fasteners is heavy for its size, so the real weight is the number you pay on, and there is no volumetric surprise waiting for you. The one thing to watch instead is the 5 kg minimum billable weight — a 1 kg envelope of gauges is still charged at five, so it is worth consolidating a week of small dispatches into one booking. Volumetric only overtakes actual weight when the box is large and light, which on this lane means cloth and handloom bales rather than anything from a machine shop.
