Before anything else on this route we check with DTDC International whether the destination city is currently being served and whether the contents you have described are currently acceptable. Both of those can change, and they have changed more than once. We would rather tell you no at the start than take money for a parcel that comes back.

Russian customs.
Clearance is at Moscow (Sheremetyevo or Domodedovo) or St Petersburg. The Federal Customs Service works from the declaration and expects the consignee to be identifiable, which is why we ask for passport details or an INN at pickup. Vague contents descriptions are the reliable way to lose a week here.
Onward leg, then the door.
Moscow and St Petersburg addresses are delivered fairly promptly after clearance. Anything beyond them travels on as a Russian domestic movement — Kazan, Kursk, Volgograd, Perm, Ufa, Novosibirsk — and that leg is measured in days, not hours. POD comes to you on WhatsApp.

What you’ll need at pickup.
Of everything we ship out of Bengaluru, this is the lane where documentation discipline pays the largest dividend. A precise declaration is not bureaucracy here; it is the difference between eleven days and a month.
KYC of the sender
One photo ID for the name on the AWB — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence — photographed at pickup and held only in DTDC’s record. We will also ask you to confirm in writing that the parcel contains nothing on the restricted list, because the declaration you sign is what the carrier relies on.
A line-by-line invoice, no summaries
Every item gets its own description, quantity and value. ‘Personal effects’ against a single figure is the most common cause of a hold on this route. Write ‘4 cotton thermal vests, ₹400 each’ and ‘1 sealed coffee powder 500 g, ₹350’ and the parcel reads itself.
Who the receiver is
Russian clearance expects the consignee to be properly identified — passport details for a personal parcel, an INN for a company. Get them from the recipient before you pack. Personal-import allowances on this route have been revised more than once in recent years, so we check the figure that applies on your booking date rather than quoting you one from memory.
What can and can’t go to Russia.
This is the one destination where we ask you to describe the contents before we quote rather than after. International restrictions and the carrier network’s own policies both bear on what moves here, and both are revised from time to time — so treat the list below as the shape of the problem and let us confirm the specifics for your parcel on the day.
Don’t even try
- High-specification electronics and components — laptops, servers, semiconductors, radio and navigation equipment. Export controls apply to a wide range of technology on this route and network policy is correspondingly cautious. Assume no, and ask us before you assume otherwise.
- Drones, encryption hardware and transmitting equipment — licensing questions attach to these on arrival and the network does not carry them.
- Medicines containing narcotic or psychotropic substances — this deserves more attention than any other line here. Preparations that are ordinary prescriptions in India, including some codeine and tramadol-based ones, are tightly controlled in Russia and the consequences of getting it wrong fall on the receiver, not the sender. Do not put loose tablets in a parcel to a student.
- Weapons, replicas and ammunition of any description — including decorative swords and air pistols.
- Currency, precious metal, unset stones and investment-grade jewellery — not carried, and heavily scrutinised if attempted.
- Perishable food, meat, dairy and anything unsealed — a parcel that may spend a fortnight in transit is not the way to send ghee or homemade sweets in any case.
- Political or campaign material of any kind — we do not carry it on this lane. Academic and reference books are a separate matter and move normally.
- Aerosols, liquids, loose lithium cells and power banks — the standard air-cargo bars, applied strictly.
Allowed with care
- Clothing, thermals and bedding — the largest category on this lane by volume. Declare item counts and honest values. Bulky, so expect volumetric weight to set the price.
- Sealed dry food — filter coffee powder, huli podi, chutney podi, chakli, packaged mixture, instant mixes with no milk solids. Factory-packed, ingredients printed, small quantities.
- Documents, transcripts and attested papers — declared as documents of no commercial value, sent express, tracked. Scan everything first.
- Ordinary prescription medicine, with paperwork — sealed strip, prescription bearing the doctor’s registration number, a one-line note on the condition, and nothing from the controlled list above. Tell us what it is before pickup and we will check it.
- Textiles and festival clothing — sarees, kurtas, sherwanis. Declare realistically; under-declaration invites an inspection you do not want on a fifteen-day journey.
- Books, stationery and study material — medical textbooks, reference volumes, dissection kits without blades. All routine.

Thousands of Indian students study medicine at Russian universities, and that single fact accounts for most of what leaves Bengaluru on this route. It is a parents’ lane — patient, seasonal, and full of first-winter mistakes we can help you avoid.
First-winter kit for students
The September and October intakes produce the same parcel every year, six weeks late. Thermals, a proper woollen cap, gloves, heavy socks, a quilt cover, hot-water bottles. Send it in September rather than after the first cold week — on an 8–12 day express band plus a domestic Russian leg, November is already too late for November.
Home food that survives a fortnight
Filter coffee powder above all, then podis, ready mixes with no milk in them, chakli and sealed mixture. Hostel kitchens are small and hostel homesickness is large, so a pressure cooker or a small mixer sometimes travels too — declare appliances with make, model and value and check the voltage before you spend the freight.
University and registration papers
Admission letters, mark sheets, attested transcripts, migration and eligibility certificates, and later the paperwork for licensing examinations back in India. Originals go express in a rigid wallet, always scanned first, always with a phone number in the destination city that someone actually answers.
Medicine, carefully and only after a check
Ordinary prescription tablets with the strip sealed and the prescription attached are usually manageable. Anything with a narcotic or psychotropic component is not, and it is not a risk worth taking on someone else’s behalf. Tell us the exact name of the medicine at booking; where it is doubtful, buying it locally in Russia is the better answer.
Festival parcels to student associations
Diwali and Holi are organised properly by Indian student bodies at the larger Russian universities, and the decorations, diyas, dry sweets and clothing come from home. These are group parcels, so they are heavier — book three weeks ahead of the date and split across two boxes rather than one over-packed carton.
Family and business parcels to Moscow and St Petersburg
A smaller but steady flow: gifts to Indian families settled in the two big cities, documents and contracts between Bengaluru firms and Russian counterparts, and textile or handicraft samples to buyers. Commercial consignments need HS codes and the receiver’s INN on the invoice.

A week without an update is not unusual here and is not a lost parcel. Can you actually ship to Russia right now, and to any city?
Usually yes, but we confirm it rather than promise it. International restrictions and the carrier network’s own acceptance rules both apply to this route, and both have been revised several times in recent years — which destination cities are served, what categories of goods are accepted and how payment on the far side works can all change without much notice. So the process here is different from our other lanes: tell us the destination city and describe the contents, we check current serviceability with DTDC International, and only then do we quote and book. If the answer for your parcel is no on a given week, we will say so plainly rather than accept the booking and let it come back to you a month later. What we will not do is speculate about why a rule exists or when it might change; we deal with what the network can carry today.
My daughter is at a medical university in Kursk. How long after Moscow does it take?
Add a few working days to the headline transit, and be a little more generous in winter. Everything inbound clears at Moscow or St Petersburg, and a parcel for Kursk, Volgograd, Kazan, Ufa, Perm or any of the other university cities then moves onward as a Russian domestic shipment across real distances. Three things make that leg go smoothly. Write the address the Russian way — six-digit postal index first, then region, city, street, building, block and flat — and give it in Cyrillic as well as transliteration if the recipient can send you that. Put her Russian mobile number on the invoice, not her Indian one. And if the address is a university hostel, name the hostel office or warden as the receiver alongside her, because a rider cannot hand a carton to a room number when the student is in a lecture.
Can I post her prescription medicines from here?
Some, and only after we check the specific medicine with you. Ordinary prescription tablets in a sealed manufacturer’s strip, accompanied by a copy of the prescription showing the doctor’s registration number and a line stating the condition, are generally manageable in a small personal quantity. But Russia controls medicines containing narcotic or psychotropic substances far more tightly than India does, and that catches preparations most families would think of as routine — several common painkillers and cough preparations among them. The consequences of a mistake land on your daughter at the receiving end, not on you. So give us the exact brand and composition at booking rather than a description, let us check it, and where there is any doubt, the sensible course is to have her buy the equivalent locally with a Russian prescription. No liquids, no injectables and no loose tablets, on this or any other route.
