The Puducherry catchment leans oddly creative for a courier lane — Domlur, Cooke Town, Koramangala and the design and boutique trade around them, plus BTM Layout, Bommanahalli and Begur on the Hosur Road side where a lot of the weekend traffic to the coast starts from. Books, printed matter and ashram material
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram has published from Puducherry for decades and there is a long-established readership and correspondence around it, along with a steady flow of printed material in both directions — book cartons, journals, study material, framed prints, calendars and cards. Books are heavy for their size and travel best in tight, fully packed double-wall cartons; a half-empty book carton collapses under stacking and that is where damage comes from, not from the road.
Craft, handmade paper and small-workshop consignments
The Auroville area supports a genuine cluster of small production units — handmade paper, incense and candles, textiles, leather, ceramics, cane and light furniture — and their Bengaluru customers, stockists and exhibition organisers keep this lane busy. Finished goods travel fine. The oils, essences and solvents that go into making some of them do not, and that is worth reading the section below about before you pack a mixed consignment.
Student and campus parcels
Pondicherry University out at Kalapet, the medical and engineering colleges around Pillaichavady and the arts colleges in town keep a hostel population drawn from all over India, with plenty of family in Bengaluru. Laptops, project material, lab coats, bedding, cycle parts, exam books, and the whole reverse flow at the end of term. The student’s own mobile and hostel block go on the AWB; a campus mail point will not sign for what it cannot phone in.
Things sent ahead of a trip
Puducherry is a weekend destination for Bengaluru and a real share of this lane is luggage sent ahead — a bag going to a guest house before a family arrives, wedding or event material for a function booked at a heritage property, exhibition and stall material for a festival week. Anything going to a guest house needs the property name, a booking reference or the guest name, and a live phone number, because desks here will not hold a parcel for an unidentified arrival.

Because Puducherry is administered separately, a set of paperwork exists on this lane that would not exist for a Tamil Nadu town — registrations and licences filed with UT departments, tenders, educational and professional certificates for verification, commercial invoices and e-way bill copies against consignments moving into the territory. Common Bengaluru → Puducherry misjudgements
- Alcohol, in either direction — Puducherry’s liquor pricing is famous and it is the single most-asked question on this lane. Alcohol is prohibited on courier networks outright: it is a flammable liquid, it is excise-controlled, and moving it across a state boundary without a permit is a separate offence from the carriage rule. There is no packaging, declaration or quantity that makes it acceptable, and we will not book it.
- Essential oils, attar bases and fragrance concentrates — the craft units around Auroville work with these constantly and customers assume a small stoppered bottle is harmless. It is a flammable liquid and is refused on surface and air alike. Sealed incense sticks, cones, dhoop and dry potpourri travel without any difficulty; the liquid stage of the same product does not.
- Candle wax, resin and casting compounds — the finished candle in a rigid box is fine. Bulk paraffin, soy wax slabs, two-part resin kits and their hardeners are a different consignment: they soften, they seep, and the hardeners are classed with the flammable and corrosive goods. If a craft order mixes the two, split it and tell us at booking.
- Old furniture, salvage and "heritage" pieces — the antique and reproduction trade here means we get asked to move carved doors, teak panels and colonial-era furniture. Genuine antiques sit under cultural-property rules we are not equipped to clear, and oversized unpacked wood is not a parcel in any case. Small crated reproductions with an invoice are quotable — send photographs and dimensions first.
- Ceramics and glass packed the way the potter packed them — not a ban, a packing standard, and the most common damage claim on this route. A stack of plates in newspaper inside a single-wall box will not survive stacking. Individually wrapped, boxed with 5 cm of fill on every face, inside a rigid double-wall outer, and marked fragile. Proof of delivery follows within an hour of the drop. Two things about delivering into Puducherry are worth planning for. The heritage grid — the French quarter streets between the canal and the sea — is narrow, one-way in long stretches and heavily parked, so riders work it on two-wheelers and phone from the road rather than pulling up at the gate; a bare street address with no phone will not complete. And the beachfront promenade is closed to vehicles for a long stretch of the evening and night, which means an address on or immediately off it is a daytime delivery whatever time the parcel arrives in town. Put the recipient’s mobile, a house or property name and a landmark on every consignment, and if the address is a guest house, add the guest’s name and booking reference so the desk can accept it.

Does a Puducherry booking cover Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe?
No, and this is the most misunderstood address question in the country. The Union Territory of Puducherry is made up of four separate enclaves that do not touch each other and sit inside three different states. Puducherry itself is on the Tamil Nadu coast in the 605xxx pin series and is what this page is priced on. Karaikal is roughly 130 km further south, also surrounded by Tamil Nadu, in its own 609xxx pin range. Yanam is on the Andhra coast in the Godavari delta, a very long way north. Mahe is on the Kerala coast near Thalassery, on the opposite side of the peninsula entirely. All four are served, but each is fed from a completely different regional hub with its own transit and its own rate, and none of them can be booked as "Puducherry". Send us the six-digit pin with your enquiry and we will quote the enclave you actually mean.
Puducherry is a Union Territory — does that change the invoice, GST or e-way bill on a commercial consignment?
It does, and getting it wrong is the usual reason a trade consignment on this lane sits a day longer than it should. Puducherry has its own state code for GST and is a distinct place of supply from Tamil Nadu, so a movement from Karnataka into Puducherry is an inter-state supply: charge IGST, put the Puducherry GSTIN and the Puducherry address on the invoice, and do not let your billing system default the state field to Tamil Nadu because the pin looks southern. Where consignment value crosses the e-way bill threshold, generate the bill against the correct destination state before the parcel is handed over, not afterwards. For personal and gift parcels none of this applies — a household consignment needs nothing beyond an accurate description and the recipient’s details. Can I courier alcohol from Puducherry to Bangalore, or send some the other way?
No, in either direction, and we would rather be blunt about it than have you pack a box that gets destroyed. Alcohol fails on three separate counts at once. It is a flammable liquid, which is a straightforward carriage prohibition on both surface and air. It is an excise-controlled good, and moving it across a state or territory boundary requires a permit that no courier consignment carries. And Karnataka in particular treats undeclared inbound liquor as a matter for the excise authorities, not the transporter. A sealed bottle, a duty-paid bill, a gift wrapping or a declared value changes none of it. If someone has asked you to send a bottle from Puducherry, the answer is to carry it yourself within whatever personal allowance applies, or not at all. Everything else from the same shop — the packaged snacks, the chocolates, the sealed dry goods — we will carry happily.
