International route · Bangalore → New Zealand

International courier from Bangalore to New Zealand. Free home pickup.

Collected from your Bengaluru door at any hour, packed to a biosecurity standard, and flown out of Kempegowda on the DTDC International network. 8–12 working days door-to-door on express, from ₹1,700 per kilogram before fuel surcharge and GST. This is the longest and the dearest of our Pacific lanes, and both facts have the same cause — there is very little direct capacity to New Zealand.

02 — How this lane runs

Five steps from your Bengaluru door to a New Zealand address.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

Free at 5 kg+ at whatever hour suits you; the HSR Layout desk is staffed right through the night. Given the transit on this route, the useful thing we can offer is a same-night collection: a parcel decided on at ten in the evening is in the network the next morning rather than three days later.

STEP

Pack to MPI standard.

We open the carton with you and remove anything of plant, animal or insect origin — and on this destination that net is wider than most people expect. Then an itemised declaration with a value against every line, because New Zealand's inspectors read descriptions closely and vagueness is treated as a reason to look.

STEP

BLR gateway, then a connection.

Out through Kempegowda on the DTDC International network. Bengaluru being a gateway city saves the overland leg an inland origin cannot avoid — but be clear about what it does not save: there is almost no direct India–New Zealand freight capacity, so the parcel connects through Australia or Southeast Asia, and that connection is most of why the band is 8–12 days.

STEP

NZ border (MPI and Customs).

Clearance at the Auckland gateway. New Zealand Customs handles duty and GST; the Ministry for Primary Industries handles biosecurity, and MPI is the strictest inspection regime we deal with anywhere — stricter than Australia in several categories. Even a clean parcel commonly takes 48–96 hours to be released.

STEP

Doorstep delivery.

Last mile via NZ Post or the local courier partner. New Zealand addresses need a suburb line and often carry a rural delivery number; both matter, and a recipient mobile matters more. The POD comes to you on WhatsApp the same day it is signed.

03 — Rate band, Bangalore → New Zealand

Starting rates. Weight — usually volumetric — sets the price.

Whichever is higher of actual and volumetric weight sets the charge, the fuel surcharge in force on the booking date is added, and GST comes after. This is the highest per-kilogram lane on our international card, and the reason is capacity rather than distance — New Zealand costs more than Australia because the parcel has to connect.

Starting per-kg rates

  • Express (8–12 days, door)from ₹1,700 / kg
  • Economy (12–18 days, door)from ₹1,300 / kg
  • Min billable weight0.5 kg
  • Pickup from BengaluruFree at 5 kg+

Volumetric formula: (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000.

Worked example

A 3 kg parcel — two silk sarees, a set of children's clothes and a brass diya set, about 35 × 30 × 20 cm:

  • Volumetric4.2 kg (billed over actual)
  • Express, 4.2 kg × ₹1,700≈ ₹7,140
  • + fuel surcharge (~25%)≈ ₹1,785
  • + GST 18%≈ ₹1,607
  • Approx total, express≈ ₹10,532

Indicative only. At ₹1,700 a kilogram the volumetric penalty bites harder here than on any other lane — one box size smaller is real money. Ask us to check before you seal it.

04 — Customs & documentation

What you’ll need at pickup.

The customs side of New Zealand is ordinary. The biosecurity side is not, and the paperwork exists mainly to prove to MPI that you knew exactly what was in the box.

KYC of the sender

One government photo ID in the sender's name as it appears on the AWB — Aadhaar, passport or licence. We take a photograph of it at pickup, and it is not held beyond DTDC's record of the booking.

A declaration MPI can read

Item by item, with quantity and value, and specific nouns. "Handicraft" invites an inspection; "brass oil lamp, 2 pieces" does not. Declare everything, including things you are confident about — an undeclared permitted item reads worse at the border than a declared borderline one, and false declarations carry penalties in New Zealand.

Medicines and personal quantities

New Zealand permits personal importation of prescription medicine in a limited supply — generally up to three months' worth — provided it comes in the original sealed strip with a copy of the prescription showing the doctor's registration number and the patient's name. No controlled substances, no injectables, no liquid formulations. Tell us the quantity before pickup.

05 — New Zealand-specific restrictions

What New Zealand doesn’t let in.

MPI protects a small, isolated island ecosystem with few natural defences, and it is if anything harder to satisfy than Australia's DAFF. These are real New Zealand rules. Items sent against them are seized and destroyed, and the consignee can be charged the disposal cost. The working rule for this destination: if it grew, came from an animal, or was made by an insect, assume it is blocked.

Don’t even try

  • Honey, beeswax, propolis and royal jelly — the most New Zealand-specific ban on the list. The country's apiculture industry is protected absolutely, and that extends to cosmetics, balms and ayurvedic preparations that contain any bee product. Read the ingredients before you pack a gift set.
  • All food — MPI's default position on an imported food item is seizure, and that includes commercially sealed dry goods, sweets, spice packets and tea. This is stricter than Australia and considerably stricter than Canada.
  • Anything carrying soil or plant residue — used trekking boots, cricket and football kit, tent pegs, garden tools, a bicycle that has been ridden. Soil is the category MPI cares about most after bees.
  • Seeds, whole spices with viable seed, dried herbs and leaves — including decorative dried flowers and pressed-petal decoration sets.
  • Untreated wood, bamboo and cane — carved boxes, frames, wooden-handled utensils, and agarbatti, which is treated as plant material.
  • Meat and dairy in every form — dried, sealed and processed included.
  • Animal products — feathers, shells, bone and horn items, and leather without documentation.
  • All liquids, aerosols and lithium cells over 100 Wh — restricted on the air leg regardless of destination.

Allowed with care

  • Silk and cotton textiles — Kanjeevaram, Mysore silk, new clothing, dupattas. The single best category for a New Zealand parcel. Declare fabric, piece count and value.
  • Brass and stainless steel items — diyas, pooja lamps, cookware, tumblers. New and clean, with no wooden or cane component.
  • Books, documents and printed material — straightforward; declare title and value.
  • Prescription tablets — original sealed strip, prescription attached, within the personal-supply limit. Herbal and ayurvedic preparations must be declared in full, and anything containing honey, beeswax or restricted botanicals will not pass.
  • Non-precious jewellery and small electronic items — give us the make, the model and a value for each. Precious metal does not ship.
  • Sandalwood soap — a manufactured toiletry. Sandalwood powder is raw plant material and is not a candidate for this destination.
06 — What goes Bangalore → New Zealand

A small, settled community and a long, careful lane.

New Zealand's Indian community is smaller than Australia's but older and more settled, and Bengaluru's share of it is mostly recent — software and healthcare families who moved in the last fifteen years, plus a steady flow of students.

Family parcels to Auckland

Auckland holds the great majority of the traffic on this lane, and within it the Indian neighbourhoods around Sandringham, Mount Roskill and Papatoetoe. Clothing, festival wear, brass items, children's books, documents. Everything except the food that people want most to send.

Parents shipping to students

Auckland, AUT, Massey, Waikato, Canterbury and Otago. Bedding, winter clothing, textbooks, steel kitchen kit. Two things specific to here: the South Island gets genuinely cold, and the parcel needs the hall of residence, the room number and a New Zealand mobile, because a hall office will not accept what it cannot phone in.

Silk sarees and wedding wear

Kanjeevaram and Mysore silk for weddings and temple functions in Auckland and Wellington. Ship three weeks ahead — this is the lane where the transit band and the inspection window together can eat a fortnight, and a wedding outfit held at Auckland is not a recoverable situation.

Skilled-migrant relocations

Software, engineering and healthcare families arriving on work visas and shipping the remainder of the household afterwards. Documents, clothing, cookware. Confirm the permanent address first; a parcel sent to short-term accommodation on this lane will very likely outlast the tenancy.

Qualification and immigration paperwork

Qualification assessments, transcripts, apostilled degrees, notarised employment records and visa documents. Always express and tracked. Given the transit, send these the moment they are ready rather than the week they are due.

Deepavali parcels, textile-only

The community celebrates properly and the parcels start in September, which is exactly right for a 8–12 day lane. What travels: new clothes, silk, brass diyas, electric lamps, children's gifts, greeting cards. What does not: mithai, agarbatti, mehendi cones, dried flowers, and rice or grain in a pooja kit.

07 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.

The AWB reaches you on WhatsApp the moment the parcel is booked into DTDC International, whatever the hour — the Bengaluru desk is staffed around the clock. Track it at dtdc.in. Expect three quiet stretches on this lane rather than two: the first air leg, the connection through Australia or Southeast Asia, and then MPI screening at Auckland, which routinely runs 48–96 hours without a scan. None of that is a lost parcel. A status of held or inspection is worth sending to us straight away.

08 — Three questions about New Zealand shipments

Asked most often on this lane.

Why is New Zealand slower and more expensive than Australia when they are next door to each other?

Because the parcel does not go next door — it goes through it. There is very little direct freight capacity between India and New Zealand, so a consignment out of Bengaluru is flown to an Australian or Southeast Asian hub and connects onward to Auckland. Every connection costs a handover and a wait, and connecting capacity is priced higher than direct, which is why the card reads ₹1,700 a kilogram here against ₹1,500 for Australia. Then MPI clearance at Auckland adds another two to four days on top. We publish 8–12 working days because that is what the lane actually does; if someone quotes you six, ask them which flight they think it is on.

Why would MPI care about my nephew's old running shoes or his cricket bag?

Soil, and what lives in it. A gram of Indian soil in the tread of a used shoe or in the seam of a cricket bag can carry seeds, nematodes, fungal spores and insect eggs that New Zealand does not have, and the country's pasture and native forest have very little resistance to any of them. So used outdoor footwear, sports kit, camping gear and garden tools are inspected and routinely refused. If something used genuinely has to travel — a cricket bat, say — it needs to be cleaned to the point where there is no soil or grass residue anywhere on it, and declared as used equipment so an inspector can check rather than discover. New items in original packaging avoid the question entirely.

My cousin's address has "RD 3" in it and no street number. Is that a mistake?

No — that is a rural delivery number, and it is a real and necessary part of a New Zealand address. Outside the main urban areas, properties are served by rural delivery runs, and the RD number tells the carrier which run the address sits on. Leave it off and the parcel goes to the nearest depot and waits. A complete New Zealand address wants the recipient's name, the street or road, the RD number where there is one, the suburb or locality, the town or city, and the four-digit postcode — plus a New Zealand mobile number, which on rural runs is what actually gets the parcel handed over. Send us the address exactly as your cousin wrote it and we will format it rather than tidying it into something the carrier cannot use.
