That matters more on this lane than most: a large share of the people sending to Nepal work hospitality, security and retail shifts around Marathahalli, Bellandur, Whitefield and Hebbal, and finish at eleven at night or six in the morning. Sender KYC, an honest contents declaration, and a printed invoice if the goods are commercial. This is the step people skip because the India–Nepal border is open and the shipment feels domestic. It is not — read the FAQ below before you seal the carton.
BLR gateway.
Handover into the DTDC International facility at Kempegowda. Because Bengaluru is a full international gateway, the parcel is not first trucked north to a Mumbai or Delhi hub as domestic cargo the way it is from an inland origin — the international leg starts here, and that is usually a day or two saved at the front of the journey.
Nepal customs, Tribhuvan.
Clearance at Tribhuvan International in Kathmandu. The India–Nepal trade arrangement keeps the paperwork lighter than most international destinations, and clean parcels often clear inside a day. Duty is still assessed on dutiable goods and is paid by the person receiving it, not by you.

A 3 kg parcel — say two fleece jackets, a pair of school shoes and a bundle of exercise books for a family in Pokhara:

What you’ll need at pickup.
The paperwork on this lane is genuinely light by international standards, which is exactly why people under-prepare it. Three things done properly at your door keep the parcel moving through Tribhuvan without a query.
KYC of the sender
One photo ID for whoever's name goes on the airway bill — Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or a Nepali passport if you are a Nepali national living in Bengaluru. We photograph it at pickup and it is not retained beyond DTDC's own record. Nepali citizenship documents are accepted; you do not need an Indian ID to send from here.
Declaration, and the consignee's ID number
A gift parcel needs a written contents declaration with an honest value. Anything commercial needs a printed invoice with quantity and value. Either way, put the receiver's Nepali citizenship certificate number or passport number on the booking — it is not strictly mandatory, but Tribhuvan clears parcels carrying it noticeably faster.
Prescription, for medicines
Very common on this lane because so many Nepali families are treated at Bengaluru hospitals. Send original sealed strips, a copy of the prescription showing the doctor's registration number, and the discharge summary if there is one. Nepal's Department of Drug Administration blocks injectables and controlled substances outright; ordinary oral medication in prescribed quantity is fine.
What Nepal doesn’t let in.
These are Nepal Department of Customs rules, not our caution. Two of them catch senders who assume that an open land border means a relaxed customs regime. Anything shipped against this list is seized at Tribhuvan and the disposal cost lands on the consignee.
Don’t even try
- Beef and anything containing it — this is the Nepal-specific one, and it does not apply to its neighbours. Cow slaughter is constitutionally prohibited and beef import is banned outright. Check ingredient lists on packaged food; beef tallow and beef-derived gelatin count.
- Weapons and replicas, including decorative khukuri — the blade is a national symbol and is sold openly in Nepal, which is precisely why senders assume it can be posted back. It cannot. Courier is a zero-tolerance channel for edged items in either direction.
- Drones, walkie-talkies and radio transmitters — these need prior clearance from the Nepali civil aviation and telecom authorities. Do not put one in a parcel and hope; it is held, and releasing it is the consignee's problem.
- Unprescribed pharmaceuticals and all narcotics — including anything you would buy over the counter in Bengaluru but that is scheduled in Nepal.
- Counterfeit branded goods — seized, with a fine on the receiver.
- Aerosols, all liquids, lithium cells above 100 Wh — air-leg rules. Loose power banks are refused; a battery installed inside a laptop is accepted.
Allowed with care
- Filter coffee powder, dry podis and masala — sealed and factory-labelled, these clear easily and are among the most-shipped things on this lane. Wet chutney, sambar in a jar and coffee decoction are liquids and do not travel.
- Warm clothing — the single most sensible thing to send. Bengaluru never needs it and Kathmandu, Pokhara and the hill districts do, from October onwards. Declare it as used or new clothing with a fair value.
- Silk sarees and wedding wear — Kanjeevaram, Mysore silk, blouse pieces. Declare a fair value; under-declaring a bridal outfit is what turns a clean parcel into a held one.
- Mobile phones and small electronics — allowed, but dutiable, and the duty is real. Declare make, model, IMEI and the true value. See the FAQ below.
- Prescription tablets — sealed strips with the prescription attached.
- Hindu religious items — idols, pooja kits, devotional books. Nepal is a Hindu-majority country and these move freely; declare them plainly.
- Sandalwood soap and powder — fine as manufactured goods. Sandalwood oil is a liquid and is not.
A working-people’s lane, not a luxury one.
Bengaluru employs a very large Nepali workforce — in hotel kitchens, in apartment and tech-park security, in restaurants and retail — and most of what leaves on this route is one family looking after another. The ₹500 rate is what makes that possible.
Hospitality, security and retail staff sending home
The backbone of this lane. Guards from the gated complexes off Sarjapur Road and Whitefield, kitchen and housekeeping staff from Koramangala and Indiranagar restaurants, shop staff from Brigade Road and Commercial Street. Clothes for the children, warm layers before winter, a phone, school supplies, medicines. Most of it is picked up late at night after a shift ends.
Families treated at Bengaluru hospitals
Nepali patients come to Bengaluru in numbers for cardiac, cancer and orthopaedic treatment, and the parcels follow the treatment home — continuing medication in sealed strips, scan films, discharge summaries and reports for the local doctor. Send the prescription and discharge paper with the tablets, not separately, and tell us the follow-up date so we book express rather than economy.
Nepali students in Bengaluru colleges
There is a substantial Nepali student population across the city's private universities and nursing and management colleges. Two flows: parents in Nepal are not the senders here — the students are, sending mark sheets, transcripts and remitted purchases home, and receiving their own documents back for visa and licensing paperwork. Always express, always tracked.
Dashain and Tihar parcels
The two big festivals fall across late September to November and this lane's volume doubles in that window. Most Nepali workers in Bengaluru cannot take leave in the hospitality season, so the parcel goes instead of the person. Sealed sweets, new clothes, small gifts for children. Book express by the first week of the festival month; economy needs a fortnight's head start.
Documents, work papers and certificates
Employment contracts, attested degree certificates, police clearance papers, passport renewals routed through family. Small, light, urgent and worth the express rate — a 0.5 kg document envelope on this lane is one of the cheapest international shipments we book.
Bengaluru brands into Kathmandu retail
Consumer-goods and hardware companies out of Koramangala and HSR sending samples and small stock consignments to distributors on New Road, Durbar Marg and in the Kathmandu wholesale trade. This needs a proper commercial invoice with HS codes and the consignee's Nepali PAN or firm registration; get those before you pack, not after.

The one thing that genuinely stalls a Nepal parcel at the last mile is a wrong or switched-off consignee number, because the address itself rarely gets a rider all the way there. The India–Nepal border is open and I can walk across without a passport. Why is this treated as an international courier?
Because people move freely across that border and goods do not. The open border is an immigration arrangement between the two countries; it has nothing to do with customs. Every parcel crossing into Nepal is an international shipment — it needs sender KYC, a contents declaration with a stated value, and it is assessed for duty at Tribhuvan like anything arriving from anywhere else. This surprises almost every first-time sender on this lane, usually at the point where the receiver is asked to pay duty on a phone that was described as a gift. The practical consequence is simple: declare honestly, tell us what is actually in the box, and we will tell you before you pack whether the receiver is likely to face a charge. What you cannot do is treat it as a domestic parcel with a longer address.
Can I send a mobile phone to my family in Nepal, and who pays the duty?
You can send it, and the receiver pays. Phones are among the most-requested items on this route and they are also the most common cause of an unhappy delivery, because senders declare a ₹20,000 handset at ₹3,000 hoping to avoid the charge. Nepali customs values electronics independently and a visibly under-declared phone draws a hold, a revaluation and a longer wait — you end up paying more, later, with an argument attached. Do it properly: declare the make, model, IMEI and real value, keep the retail invoice inside the box, and send it in its original sealed packaging. Then tell the receiver a duty payment is likely so they are not ambushed at the door. One phone at a time, and never a loose spare battery or power bank — those do not fly at all.
I work six days a week and can’t travel for Dashain. When should the parcel leave Bengaluru?
Send express in the first week of the festival month and economy a clear two weeks before that. The Dashain–Tihar window from late September to November is the busiest stretch of the year on this corridor, and it is busy at both ends: the air leg fills up, Tribhuvan clearance queues lengthen, and Kathmandu's own last-mile riders are on holiday during the festival days themselves. Bengaluru's hospitality and security workforce almost never gets leave in that season, which is exactly why the parcels spike. Practical advice from having run it: one bigger box beats three small ones on cost and on risk, keep the food sealed and dry, and if there is a specific day it needs to land by, say so at booking and we will pick the service that actually makes it rather than the cheapest one.
