Domestic route · Bangalore → Moradabad

Send a parcel from Bangalore to Moradabad. We pick up free.

About 2,270 kilometres north into the 244xxx pin series — 5–6 working days on DTDC surface, 3–4 by air express. Moradabad is the brass city and India's handicraft-export capital, so this lane carries dense, heavy, valuable cargo and prices unlike any other route we run north. Free pickup across Bengaluru at 5 kg and above, any hour of the day.

02 — How this lane runs

Collected from Bengaluru's buying and design offices, hauled north, delivered into an export town.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

Sixty to ninety minutes from the call, right across the core city. This lane leans on a different part of Bengaluru from most — buying offices, interior studios and hotel procurement desks along Old Airport Road, Indiranagar and the RT Nagar and Sanjaynagar side, plus decor retailers who deal directly with Moradabad exporters. If the pickup is from an office with a reception and a security register, give us a contact name and we will collect against it rather than calling you down.

STEP

Bengaluru sortation.

The consignment goes into DTDC's Bengaluru facility that evening. Heavy consignments are worth booking earlier in the day than light ones: a 40 kg crate needs handling on both ends of the sortation, and a late handover on a dense box is the one most likely to slip a departure.

STEP

Trunk run north.

The long haul up through central India into the northern network, then out across the plain to the Rohilkhand districts. About 2,270 kilometres, 5–6 working days on surface, 3–4 on the air leg out of Kempegowda. On a shipment tied to an export dispatch date, air is not the expensive option — it is the one that keeps a container booking.

STEP

Moradabad delivery.

Last mile across the 244xxx series. The export houses and finishing units sit on the industrial side and along the arterial roads out of the city, and they receive on a stores window rather than on a doorbell. The brass market and the old workshop quarter around the Chowk and the Peetal Basti lanes is walk-in territory. Civil Lines, Buddhi Vihar and the newer colonies are ordinary residential deliveries. Rampur, Sambhal and Amroha are separate towns on their own pin codes, not part of a Moradabad booking.

STEP

POD on WhatsApp.

Proof of delivery — a signature image or a stamped and dated receipt from the stores desk — comes back to your WhatsApp within about an hour of the consignment being receipted.

03 — Rate band on this lane

Starting rates, Bangalore → Moradabad.

Priced on whichever is higher — actual weight or volumetric weight — with the fuel surcharge current on the day you book. GST extra.

  • Standard parcel (surface) from ₹120 / kg 5–6 working days. Min billable 5 kg.
  • Express parcel (air) from ₹180 / kg 3–4 working days. Door delivery.
  • Bulk consignment (35 kg+) from ₹120 / kg Min 35 kg. Surface routing.

Pickup is free across Bengaluru on this lane once the consignment crosses 5 kg — office, studio, showroom or godown. Volumetric weight is (L × W × H in centimetres) ÷ 5000, but on this route it almost never decides the price. Brass runs to roughly eight and a half times the density of water, so a carton of brassware hits its actual weight long before the box is full, and it is the scale that bills you, not the tape measure. That is the reverse of every light-and-bulky lane, and it changes the advice: do not shrink the box to save money here, because the money is in the metal. Pack for protection and let the weight be what it is. Winter fog across this belt from mid-December to late January regularly costs the surface leg a day.

04 — What goes Bangalore → Moradabad

Sample traffic in and out of the brass trade, procurement returns, and parcels home.

Brass and metal handicraft samples, both directions

The defining cargo on this lane. Moradabad's export houses send samples south to Bengaluru buyers — lamps, planters, urlis, tableware, hardware, mixed-metal and iron decor — and the approved, rejected or marked-up pieces travel back north with change notes attached. Small boxes, serious weight. Number every piece to match the sample sheet, wrap each item separately so metal never touches metal, and put the buyer's reference and the exporter's sample number on the outside as well as inside.

Buyer spec kits, finish standards and colour references

Going the other way: finish swatches, antique and satin standards, powder-coat chips, packaging mock-ups, hangtag and label proofs, and printed specification sheets sent from a Bengaluru buying office to a Moradabad supplier before a production run. Light and cheap to send, and worth express every time — an approval sitting in transit for six days holds up an entire lot on a shop floor.

Hotel and restaurant procurement

Bengaluru's hotels, banquet halls and restaurant groups buy brass and metal service ware, buffet pieces, lamps and decor from Moradabad directly. What travels this lane is the sample-and-replacement flow rather than the bulk order: a short-shipped item, a piece damaged in a shipment, a re-plated replacement, a trial set before a full order. Give us the property's stores contact and receiving hours — hotel back-of-house has stricter delivery timings than any office.

Interior-studio and decor-retail consignments

Interior designers, decor stores and online furnishing brands in Bengaluru order in small repeat lots straight from Moradabad, and both the outbound artwork and the inbound goods move here. If you order every month, ask about a contract rate sheet and a standing pickup slot — it is materially cheaper than booking each consignment at counter rates, and it removes the phone call each time.

Engraving dies, stencils and pattern masters

Etching and engraving dies, cut stencils, jigs and master patterns going up to the workshops, and worn tooling coming back for correction. These are dense, hard-edged and quite capable of cutting through a single-wall carton, so they get rigid double-boxing with edge protection. Oil and wrap any ground or polished face before the rider arrives — five days in a hot vehicle is enough for surface rust to start.

Parcels home from the Moradabad workforce

Moradabad and the districts around it send a large number of people to Bengaluru's construction sites, hospitals, kitchens and security work, and the steady other half of this lane is what they send back: a phone bought here, clothes, a razai before the winter, medicines with the prescription copy, sealed dry snacks at Eid and Diwali. Free collection from a PG, a shared room or a site accommodation address, exactly like a corporate pickup.

05 — What you cannot send

A short, real list.

Standard network prohibitions first. The second card is written for a metal-finishing town, because on this route almost everything refused comes out of a polishing or plating shop:

Banned outright

  • Liquids in any container, sample vials included
  • Aerosols, pressurised cans and gas cartridges
  • Corrosives, acids and industrial chemicals
  • Flammable solids and matches
  • Currency notes, bullion and precious stones
  • Alcohol and tobacco in any quantity

What comes off a finishing bench and cannot travel

  • Lacquer, clear coat, thinner and antiquing solution — the chemistry that gives brassware its finish, and the single most common refusal on this lane. Solvent-based coatings are flammable and are excluded on surface and air alike. Send the finished sample piece; the finishing shop at the other end has its own drums.
  • Brass polish, buffing compound in solvent and pickling solution — polish paste in a solvent base and the acid pickle used to clean metal before plating are both out. A dry buffing bar and a polishing mop are ordinary goods and travel without any difficulty.
  • Electroplating salts and plating-bath chemicals — nickel and chrome salts, brighteners and cyanide-bearing compounds are hazardous goods with their own regulated pathway and are never a courier consignment. Do not send them as a "sample" in a taped jar.
  • Loose metal scrap, turnings and dross — swarf, offcuts and scrap brass. These are not parcels: they tear packaging, they injure handlers, and no network books them. If a lot genuinely needs to move, it moves as freight on a transport bill, not on a waybill.
  • Camphor, incense resin and firelighter tablets — sent from the south along with lamps and puja brass more often than you would expect. Camphor is a flammable solid and is excluded outright. The lamp travels; the camphor does not.
06 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.

The AWB comes to you on WhatsApp as soon as the consignment is booked into DTDC, tracking is live at dtdc.in at any hour, and the POD is forwarded within an hour of signature. Moradabad's last mile splits into three quite different behaviours. Export houses and finishing units receive at a stores or dispatch desk that works to fixed goods-inward hours and to a purchase-order number — give us the firm's registered name, the plot or unit address and the stores contact's mobile, because a consignment that arrives without a reference sits on the desk unbooked even after it has been signed for. The old brass market and the workshop lanes around the Chowk and Peetal Basti are too narrow for a delivery vehicle, so the rider walks in, and a workshop there is identified by the karta's name and the mohalla rather than by a number. Residential addresses in Civil Lines, Buddhi Vihar and the newer colonies deliver normally on a house number and a phone. A heavy consignment adds one more wrinkle worth knowing: a 40 kg carton is a two-person lift, so tell us at booking if there is nobody at the far end to take it off a trolley.

07 — Three questions about this lane

Specific to Bangalore → Moradabad.

My box is small but it is solid brass. Why is it quoted higher than a much bigger carton of clothes?

Because you are billed on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater, and brass decides that contest on the scale rather than the tape measure. Volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5000, which is a formula built around the idea that most parcels are lighter than the space they take up. Brass is about eight and a half times the density of water, so a carton you can lift in one hand can genuinely weigh fifteen or twenty kilos, and its volumetric figure will be a fraction of that. A big soft carton of clothes is the opposite case and is billed on its size. The practical consequence is that all the usual advice about squashing the box down to save money does not apply on this lane. You will pay for the metal regardless, so spend the space on protection instead — separate wraps, corner packing and a rigid outer — and send us the actual weight rather than the dimensions when you ask for a quote. At 35 kg and above the consignment moves onto the bulk band at ₹120/kg on surface, which is where most brass consignments are cheapest.

Can you collect finished brassware from a Moradabad exporter and bring it down to Bengaluru?

Yes — the return leg is a routine booking on this route and a large part of what we handle here. Give us the exporter's firm name, the full address with the 244xxx pin, the contact at their dispatch desk and a rough weight, and the pickup is arranged at their end with the consignment delivered to your Bengaluru office, studio or showroom. Three things make it go smoothly. Ask the exporter to pack for a five-day road journey rather than for a van across town — individually wrapped pieces, no metal touching metal, and a rigid double-wall outer, because dents and lacquer scratches are the only damage that really happens to brass in transit. Make sure the tax invoice or delivery challan travels inside the carton with a duplicate in a pouch outside, and that the e-way bill is raised where the consignment value crosses ₹50,000 — that obligation sits with the consignor's GSTIN, which is theirs. And if the goods are tied to an export dispatch or a buyer's inspection date, book the air leg: 3–4 working days against 5–6 is usually the difference between making a container booking and missing it.

How should brassware be packed so it arrives without dents or scratched lacquer?

Metal-on-metal contact is the enemy, and almost every damaged brass consignment we have seen was one where two pieces were allowed to rub for five days. Wrap each item separately in tissue first — tissue protects lacquer where bubble wrap can print a pattern into a soft finish over a long journey — then bubble each wrapped piece, then nest them in a rigid double-wall carton with enough fill that nothing shifts when you shake the box. Give thin rims, spouts, handles and finials extra padding, because those are what bend. Keep a single carton to a weight one person can handle if you can: two 20 kg boxes survive a long trunk route better than one 40 kg box that gets dragged. Mark it FRAGILE and, more usefully, mark which way is up. Our rider carries tape, bubble wrap and a scale, and on this lane he will happily repack a marginal box at your door rather than book something that will arrive dented — it is faster than a claim at the other end.
