The heaviest catchment on this route is the Outer Ring Road corridor — Marathahalli, Bellandur, Sarjapur Road and the tech parks feeding them — where we ask for a two-hour window because the ORR itself is the bottleneck, not the distance. Hebbal and Yelahanka run on the same two-hour rule. We bring tape, bubble wrap and a scale, and seal the parcel in front of you.

Same-evening handover into DTDC’s Bengaluru facility and onto the coastal Karnataka trunk. Because this is an intra-state lane it does not have to route through a distant regional hub, which is why a 350 km run holds a next-working-day band most of the year.
The ghat crossing.
West on NH75 through Hassan and Sakleshpur, then down the Shiradi ghat into Dakshina Kannada. This is the part of the lane that has a genuine seasonal risk: during heavy monsoon the ghat section is prone to landslips and slope repair, and when it is shut or restricted the line-haul diverts via Charmadi or the longer Shivamogga side. That diversion costs a working day. Nothing else on this route does.

Pickup is free across Bengaluru on this lane for parcels 5 kg and above. Volumetric formula: (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000, and it bites hardest on the boxed appliances and mattress-sized bundles people send to a parent’s house on the coast. One seasonal note that matters more here than the price does: between June and September the ghat section can add a working day to the surface leg, and that is the window in which express routing is actually worth considering on a lane that otherwise does not need it.

The backbone of this lane. Dakshina Kannada has sent people to Bengaluru for two generations — into IT on the ORR, into banking, into hospitality — and a very large number of them still have parents in Mangaluru, Bantwal or Moodbidri. What moves is unglamorous and constant: medicines with the pharmacy bill, a replacement phone, winter bedding, festival clothes, an air fryer, documents that a father needs a wet-ink copy of. This is a weekly-habit lane, not a once-a-year one, and we quote regular senders accordingly.
Documents for Mangaluru’s banking sector
The coast is where several of India’s old private and cooperative banks were founded and Karnataka Bank still runs its head office from Mangaluru. That leaves a steady flow of paperwork out of Bengaluru corporate offices — signed agreements, KYC originals, board sets, audit files, share transfer forms. Always book these as express with the recipient’s direct mobile on the AWB, and tell us if there is a submission date, because a document that arrives on the right day and a document that arrives are two different products.
Students at NITK Surathkal and the coastal campuses
Surathkal, the medical and engineering colleges around Deralakatte and Mangaluru city, and the Manipal cluster just up the road pull students from all over the country, and a lot of them route their supply line through a sibling or cousin in Bengaluru. Books, a monitor, lab coats, a cycle helmet, a printer. Hostel wardens will not sign for a parcel with no phone number on it, so put the student’s mobile on the AWB, not the parent’s.
Wedding cards, trousseau and Christmas parcels
Two distinct seasons on one lane. Coastal weddings run heavily between November and May and the invitation lots, blouse pieces and return gifts are frequently printed and bought in Bengaluru. Then December brings the other one — Mangaluru has a large Catholic community and the Christmas hamper and gift traffic out of Bengaluru is real enough that we plan capacity for it. Book the December parcels a week earlier than you think you need to.
Electronics, appliances and IT hardware
Things are bought in Bengaluru because the choice is better and the price is lower, then sent to the coast — laptops, routers, a smart TV, kitchen appliances, a printer for a family shop. Also office hardware for the Mangaluru delivery centres run by the IT firms. Double-wall carton, foam corners, FRAGILE marking, and read the battery note below before you pack a spare cell in with the device.
Cashew, dry fish and coastal provisions — dry only
This category runs both ways and is where most of our packing conversations happen. Cashew in factory-sealed vacuum packs, dry-roasted snacks, sealed banana chips, rice and spice mixes, and properly sun-dried and vacuum-sealed fish all travel. The moment there is moisture, brine or oil in the packet it stops being a parcel and becomes a leak that damages everything around it. The line is genuinely that simple, and it is drawn in the section below.

DTDC and every air-network courier prohibits these outright. Underneath are the specific things people try on a Bengaluru → coastal Karnataka booking, which are not the ones we see on north-bound lanes:

- Cosmetics, nail polish and fragrance samples
- Flammable liquids, thinners and lighter fluid
- Currency notes, gold and silver bullion
- Fresh fish, meat and any chilled or frozen food
Common Bengaluru → Mangalore misjudgements
- Coconut oil — the defining refusal on this lane, because coconut oil is the cooking medium of the entire coast and people genuinely believe a factory-sealed tin is different. It is not. Sealed, unsealed, litre pack or sachet, it is a prohibited liquid. The same goes for the tins of ghee that usually travel next to it.
- Wet fish pickle, gassi masala paste and salted fish — dry is the test, not sealed. Fully sun-dried fish in a vacuum pack is accepted; anything salted, brined, oil-packed or still carrying moisture is refused, and rightly so, because it leaks and taints an entire consignment. Dry masala powders in sealed pouches are fine.
- Spare lithium cells, power banks and drone packs — Bengaluru is a tech city and these ride along in the same box as the laptop being sent home. A battery installed inside a device is accepted on surface routing; a loose cell, a bare power bank or anything above 100 Wh on the air leg is not. Flag it at booking and we route it correctly.
- Fireworks and pooja-kit camphor — camphor is a flammable solid and is refused across the network, and it turns up in the temple-visit and festival parcels that go home before Ganesh Chaturthi and Deepavali. Send the rest of the kit and buy the camphor there.
- Unlisted high-value gold ornaments — not a packing problem, a cover problem. Coastal wedding traffic means jewellery gets tucked into trousseau parcels without being declared. Bullion and coin are banned outright; anything valuable that is permitted still needs declared-value cover arranged before pickup, not claimed afterwards.

The moment the parcel is booked into DTDC we send the AWB number on WhatsApp. Type it into the public tracker at dtdc.in whenever you want a status. When delivery happens we forward the POD — signed slip or photo — within the hour. The one thing worth watching on this route is the monsoon: if the tracking sits on a Hassan or Sakleshpur scan for longer than it should between June and September, that is the ghat, not a lost parcel, and it clears. Put the recipient’s mobile on the AWB regardless — much of Mangaluru delivery is apartment blocks in Kadri and Bejai, hostel and campus receptions at Surathkal, and family houses down lanes that do not map cleanly, and every one of those depends on the rider being able to phone ahead.

Will the monsoon and the Shiradi ghat delay my parcel?
Sometimes, and this is the only real variable on the route. NH75 drops to the coast through the Shiradi ghat, and in a heavy monsoon that stretch is prone to landslips and emergency slope repair. When it is closed or restricted, the line-haul diverts through Charmadi or takes the longer inland route, and that typically costs one working day rather than several. Outside June to September the lane runs at its normal 1–2 day band. If you are shipping something with a date attached during the monsoon — wedding cards, a document set, exam material — book it two days earlier than you would in February, or book express and let us route it around the road entirely.
Does a Mangalore booking cover Udupi, Manipal, Puttur or Karkala?
They are all served but none of them is a Mangaluru pin code, and this trips up parents shipping to students more than anything else. Mangaluru city is the 575xxx series and is delivered off the Mangaluru hub. Udupi and Manipal sit in the 576xxx series, and Puttur, Bantwal, Sullia, Belthangady and Karkala are in the 574xxx range worked by branch vehicles on their own schedule. Each of those can add a working day, and a few of the smaller taluk points run on alternate days. Send us the exact pin code with the booking and we will give you the real delivery date rather than the city one.
Can I send cashew, dry fish and homemade snacks to Mangalore?
Dry, sealed and non-oily — yes, and it is one of the most common things we pack on this lane. Vacuum-packed cashew, sealed banana chips, dry-roasted snacks, rice, spice powders and properly sun-dried fish in a sealed vacuum pouch are all accepted; we double-bag anything with an odour and put it in its own carton so it does not sit against clothing. What we cannot take is coconut oil, ghee, brine, wet or salted fish, fish pickle in oil, and anything chilled or frozen. If you are unsure, the practical test is whether it would leave a mark on paper after an hour — if it would, leave it out and send the dry half.
