Royal Malaysian Customs clears at the arrival gateway. Clean paperwork usually moves in 24–72 hours. Food, cosmetics and anything electrical get looked at harder than textiles, and a parcel below the duty threshold still has to be described properly.

What you’ll need at pickup.
Malaysia is a straightforward lane with two specific paperwork habits worth learning — describe food by its ingredients, and describe electricals by what they actually are. Get those right and the rest is routine.
KYC of the sender
Whoever's name appears on the AWB needs one photo ID — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. We photograph it at pickup and keep nothing beyond DTDC's own record. Company shipments: we take the GSTIN so the invoice matches the consignment.
Invoice, value, and the threshold
Malaysia applies a value threshold below which a parcel clears without import duty; above it, duty and sales tax fall on the consignee. The threshold has moved in recent years and low-value online goods are treated differently from gifts, so we would rather tell you what your specific consignment is likely to attract than print a number that dates. Declare the real value either way — a suspicious one is what triggers an inspection.
Recipient identity and phone
The consignee's MyKad number speeds clearance considerably, and their Malaysian mobile is close to essential for last mile. Malaysian addresses run house or lot number, taman or jalan, five-digit postcode, then state — give us the full string including the taman, because that is the part senders leave out.
What Malaysia doesn’t let in.
Malaysia's prohibited list reflects a Muslim-majority country with a strong halal framework and an active product-safety regime. These are Malaysian rules, not our caution, and the goods are seized rather than returned.
Don’t even try
- Pork and anything pork-derived — including gelatine in a sweet or a capsule shell. This catches Indian senders more often than actual pork ever would, because gelatine is invisible on a homemade item and undeclared on many packaged ones.
- Alcohol, and food flavoured with it — rum-soaked cake and brandy-flavoured confectionery included. Do not ship it.
- Cloth or goods bearing reproductions of Quranic verses — a specific and genuine entry on Malaysia's prohibited import list, and one that occasionally surprises textile senders.
- Controlled drugs in any quantity — Malaysia applies the death penalty for trafficking. Prescription medicines need proper documentation and nothing else should be near the parcel.
- Seditious material, and anything critical of the monarchy or inflaming racial or religious sentiment — the law is real and the consignee bears it.
- Daggers, knives and imitation weapons — including decorative pieces, which is worth knowing before you post a souvenir.
- Counterfeit branded goods and pirated media — actively enforced.
- Aerosols, liquids, lithium cells above 100 Wh — air-safety and courier rules, applied everywhere.
Allowed with care
- Filter coffee powder, podis and sealed dry snacks — the staple of this lane. Factory-sealed, ingredients printed in full. Write "vegetarian, no pork derivative, no alcohol flavouring" on the invoice and you remove the only real question Kastam has.
- Silk sarees and textiles — Kanjeevaram, Mysore silk, cottons. Routine cargo into Klang, Brickfields and Penang. Declare a fair value.
- Sandalwood soap and powder — manufactured goods, no issue. Sandalwood oil is a liquid and does not fly.
- Tamil-language books, scriptures and prayer items — entirely routine given the size of the Tamil-Malaysian community. Declare titles.
- Medicines with a prescription — NPRA governs this. Sealed strips, prescription with the doctor's registration number, recipient's name matching their MyKad. No injectables.
- Electricals and hardware samples — with a caveat. Certain regulated electrical and electronic products need SIRIM certification before they can be imported commercially, and a startup shipping a mains-powered prototype to a Malaysian distributor should check that before shipping, not after. Battery-inside-device laptops and dev boards for personal use are far simpler.
Tamil families, Malaysian students, and the Klang Valley trade.
Malaysia has one of the largest Indian-origin populations outside India — overwhelmingly Tamil, settled for well over a century — and Bengaluru sits close enough to that world, culturally and linguistically, that the parcels are unmistakably family parcels rather than gift-shop ones.
Families in Klang, Brickfields and Penang
Tamil households in Bengaluru — Ulsoor, Jayanagar, Basavanagudi, Malleshwaram — with relatives across the Klang Valley, Ipoh and Georgetown. What travels is unglamorous and specific: coffee powder, milagai podi, appalam, temple prasadam substitutes, a saree for someone's daughter. Deepavali is a national holiday in Malaysia and the volume around it is heavy, so book two weeks ahead.
Malaysian students studying in Karnataka
Karnataka's medical, dental and engineering colleges take a steady intake of Malaysian-Indian students, and their parcels run in both directions all year — documents home, transcripts and attestations, clothing and course material coming back after a term break. We handle a fair number of these from around Rajajinagar and the college belts, and the paperwork is simplest when the student's passport name is used exactly on the AWB.
Thaipusam and temple shipments
Batu Caves draws one of the largest Thaipusam gatherings anywhere, and Bengaluru temples and families ship prayer items, brass lamps, ritual textiles and printed devotional books ahead of it. Non-liquid, non-organic items only — no oils, no fresh flowers, no camphor in bulk.

Saree and fabric houses in Chickpet and Avenue Road supplying Malaysian retailers, plus Bengaluru garment units sending sample runs. Commercial invoice with HS codes, recipient's business registration, and a value that matches the goods. Repeat senders get a fixed paperwork format so each shipment is a five-minute job.
Hardware and electronics samples
Bengaluru hardware startups ship prototypes and evaluation units to Malaysian contract manufacturers and distributors, particularly around Penang's electronics cluster. Declare make, model and value, and raise the SIRIM question with your buyer before a mains-powered device leaves the country.
Documents and academic records
Degree certificates, transcripts, attestations, employment paperwork and signed contracts. Always express, always tracked. Tell us the deadline — a document parcel that has to be in Kuala Lumpur by a specific date is routed differently from one that merely needs to arrive.

The AWB number reaches you on WhatsApp as soon as the parcel is booked into DTDC International — at midnight as readily as at midday, because the HSR Layout desk does not close. Track it at dtdc.in whenever you like. Expect two quiet stretches: the air leg, and Kastam clearance, which can sit for a couple of days without generating a scan. A parcel showing as held for information is not lost — it usually means a question about the declaration, and we chase that from our end rather than leaving you on an overseas helpline. The POD follows within the hour of delivery.

Can I send homemade sweets and murukku to my relatives in Klang?
Sealed factory-packed dry items yes; homemade, honestly, no — and the reason is halal rather than hygiene. Kastam looks at ingredients, and a homemade sweet has no label to look at. Gelatine is the specific trap: it appears in plenty of Indian confectionery, it is frequently pork-derived, and there is no way for anyone at the border to establish otherwise from an unlabelled box. What travels well from Bengaluru is exactly what you would expect to see on a shop shelf — sealed murukku, mixture, dry podis, filter coffee powder, appalam — with the ingredient list printed on the pack and the words "vegetarian, no pork derivative, no alcohol flavouring" written on the invoice. Anything with ghee in quantity, anything wet, and anything that could leak should stay at home.
I'm sending an electrical product sample to a distributor in Penang. Anything special?
Yes, and it is the question hardware founders in Bengaluru most often ask too late. Malaysia regulates certain electrical and electronic products, and the ones that fall in scope need SIRIM certification before they can be imported and sold commercially. A single evaluation unit going to an engineer is a different proposition from a first commercial consignment, but the distinction is your buyer's to confirm, not ours to assume — so ask them whether the product category is regulated before you ship, and have them confirm in writing. On the courier side we need a commercial invoice with HS codes, the consignee's business details, mains adapters declared as such, and any lithium cell installed inside the device rather than loose.
Does East Malaysia take longer than Kuala Lumpur?
It does, and we would rather say so than quote you a number that only works for the Klang Valley. The 5–7 working day express band is honest for Peninsular Malaysia — Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Johor, Ipoh, Melaka. For Sabah and Sarawak, add a day or two for the onward leg after clearance, and a little more for towns outside Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. It is a last-mile matter rather than a customs one; the parcel has already cleared by then. If the deadline is tight for an East Malaysian address, tell us at booking and we will be straight with you about whether it is achievable.
