02 — How this lane runs

South Bengaluru collections, the whole of NH44, delivery across Ludhiana's 141xxx belt.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

60–90 minutes from your call across the core city. The southern belt along Hosur Road — Bommanahalli, BTM Layout, Begur, Hulimavu and the Kanakapura Road side — carries a disproportionate share of this lane, because that is where a lot of Bengaluru's garment units and their sourcing offices sit, and where many Punjabi households in the city have settled. Bulky knitwear cartons get measured as well as weighed at your door, so the number you are quoted is the number you are billed.

STEP

Bengaluru sortation.

Booked into the DTDC Bengaluru facility the same evening and scanned before the northbound departure. On the longest lane we run, the evening cut-off compounds: one missed load at origin is one full working day added at a destination that is already five or six days out.

STEP

NH44 the whole way.

Hyderabad, Nagpur, Jhansi, Gwalior, Agra, past Delhi to Ambala, and then north-west into Punjab. It is a single trunk with no ghat and no diversion season, which is why 2,470 kilometres still holds a 5–6 day band. The express alternative lifts out of Kempegowda and cuts it to 3–4.

STEP

Ludhiana delivery.

Last mile across the 141xxx series. Model Town, Sarabha Nagar, Civil Lines, Dugri, BRS Nagar and Pakhowal Road are ordinary door deliveries. The trading and manufacturing side is not: Gill Road, Industrial Area A and B, the Focal Point estates and the hosiery lanes around Chaura Bazaar all deliver to a shop counter or a factory gate with its own receiving hours and its own congestion.

STEP

POD on WhatsApp.

Signature image or stamped slip, forwarded within an hour of the delivery scan. On a factory gate delivery we send whatever gate receipt is issued alongside it.

03 — Rate band on this lane

Starting rates, Bangalore → Ludhiana.

Priced on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater, plus the fuel surcharge applying on your booking date. GST is charged on top.

  • Standard parcel (surface) from ₹120 / kg 5–6 working days. Min billable 5 kg.
  • Express parcel (air) from ₹180 / kg 3–4 working days. Door delivery.
  • Bulk consignment (35 kg+) from ₹120 / kg Min 35 kg. Surface routing.

Pickup is free at any Bengaluru address on this route once the consignment crosses 5 kg. Volumetric weight — (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 5000 — matters more on this route than on any other we run, because the defining cargo is knitwear: sweaters, thermals, shawls, jackets and blankets are almost weightless and take up an enormous box. Measure before you pack, or send us the dimensions and we will do the arithmetic. Fog across the northern plain in December and January can add a day to the surface leg, which is unhelpfully the same window in which winterwear is moving.

04 — What goes Bangalore → Ludhiana

Knitwear both ways, cycle parts, machine spares and NRI-household paperwork.

Woollens and knitwear, in both directions

Ludhiana is the country's hosiery and knitwear town, and this is the cargo that defines the lane. Sweaters, thermals, socks, shawls, track suits and blankets come south to Bengaluru buyers, retailers and families; sample lots, size sets, colour approvals and returns go back north. It is bulky, light and almost always billed volumetric, so compression bagging a carton before it is sealed is not fussiness — on this lane it is the difference between paying for 8 kg and paying for 18.

Bicycle parts and cycle accessories

Ludhiana makes bicycles and bicycle components at scale, and the trade with Bengaluru's cycling retailers and workshops runs steadily on this route — frames and forks, rims, hubs, chainsets, saddles, mudguards, spares going up for warranty replacement. Anything with a bearing or a chain arrives with grease on it, so degrease and wrap the part before it goes in the carton; an oil ring showing through the box is the usual reason one of these gets pulled at sortation.

Machine tools, fasteners and hosiery-machine spares

The other half of Ludhiana's industry is engineering — machine tools, fasteners, auto components and the knitting machinery that keeps the hosiery units running. Bengaluru workshops send spares, dies, gauges and replacement assemblies north and receive them back after repair. Small, dense, urgent cargo that bills on actual weight; double-walled and corner-padded by us, with the weight written on the outside so a stores desk can check it without opening the box.

Documents for NRI-Punjabi households

Few districts in India have as large an overseas population as this one, and the paperwork that follows it moves constantly — powers of attorney, property and mutation papers, affidavits, bank and pension documents, notarised sets going to a family lawyer or an agent in Ludhiana while the family is abroad and a relative in Bengaluru is holding the originals. Express, recipient mobile on the AWB, and tell us if there is a registry or submission date attached.

Trade samples for Bengaluru garment units

Bengaluru's garment industry sources knitted fabric, ribbing, elastics, trims and thread from Ludhiana suppliers, and the sampling loop runs on this lane — swatch cards, lab dips, size sets and approved counter-samples in one direction, comments and rejections in the other. Send flat samples in a rigid carton rather than a poly bag; a creased or rubbed swatch card cannot be approved from.

Family and student cartons

Punjabi families settled in Bengaluru send parcels home the whole year round and heavily around the festival months — gift sets, dry sweets in factory packing, clothes, a laptop for a sibling, cartons packed up when someone finishes a course or a posting here. Free pickup from 5 kg and surface at ₹120/kg makes this considerably cheaper than paying an airline for the same weight on the Bengaluru–Punjab sector.

05 — What you cannot send

A short, real list.

Network prohibitions first. Below them are the refusals that come up again and again on Bengaluru → Ludhiana bookings, which is to say: the things people pack in with woollens and with machine parts.

Banned outright

  • Liquids, oils and lubricants of every kind
  • Aerosols, fabric sprays and pressurised cans
  • Flammable solids, matches and lighters
  • Paints, adhesives and industrial chemicals
  • Currency, bullion and precious stones
  • Alcohol, tobacco products and perishables

Where Bengaluru → Ludhiana bookings go wrong

  • Naphthalene balls, camphor tablets and moth repellents — the signature refusal on this lane, because they get packed in with exactly the woollens this route carries. Naphthalene and camphor are flammable solids and they are excluded from every courier network; worse, they scent everything in the load. Vacuum-bag the knitwear instead and buy repellent at the other end.
  • Aerosol fabric fresheners and moth sprays — the same instinct, in a can. Pressurised containers cannot be booked on either surface or air, and one hidden can can hold up a whole consignment.
  • Machine parts wet with oil or grease — cycle components and knitting-machine spares arrive from the workshop coated. Not a prohibited item in itself, but a rejected one in practice: degrease it, wrap it in poly or VCI, and put an absorbent sheet under it. Loose oil, grease tins and lubricant bottles are separately banned and cannot travel with the part.
  • Second-hand woollens sent as relief or charity lots — bulk used clothing is bulk used clothing as far as billing is concerned, and volumetric weight applies exactly the same way. It is not refused, but people book it expecting a concession that does not exist. Compress it hard before you seal the carton.
  • Loose lithium cells, power banks and e-bike batteries — cycling and gadget traffic makes this a live issue here. A battery sealed inside a device rides surface; a loose cell, a power bank or an e-bike or scooter battery pack is refused outright on both services, and no packaging changes that answer.
06 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.

The AWB number is sent to you on WhatsApp the moment the consignment is booked into DTDC, it can be tracked whenever you like at dtdc.in, and the POD image follows within an hour of delivery. Ludhiana's residential last mile is straightforward — Model Town, Sarabha Nagar, Dugri, BRS Nagar and the Pakhowal Road colonies deliver to the door provided a mobile number is on the AWB. The commercial last mile is where a booking succeeds or fails. Gill Road and the hosiery lanes off Chaura Bazaar are dense, narrow trading streets where a rider realistically gets in during the morning window and where shop numbers repeat across adjacent lanes, so a consignment there needs the lane or bazaar name, the shop number and a phone answered from behind the counter. The Focal Point estates and Industrial Area A and B deliver through a factory gate to a stores desk with a receiving cut-off of its own; give us the unit name as it is registered, the plot number, the stores contact and that cut-off time, and we will time the attempt to land inside it rather than an hour after it closes.

07 — Three questions about this lane

Specific to Bangalore → Ludhiana.

My carton of sweaters weighs 7 kg but it's enormous. What will I actually be charged?

Almost certainly on volumetric weight, and this lane is the reason we put the formula on every quote. Volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5000, and it is compared against the weight on the scale — you pay whichever is higher. A knitwear carton measuring 60 × 50 × 50 cm works out to 30 kg volumetric no matter that the scale says 7, so at the surface rate you would be looking at from about ₹3,600 before fuel surcharge and GST rather than the ₹840 you had in mind. The fix is entirely in your hands and it is dramatic: vacuum or compression bag the woollens, squeeze the air out, and step down to a smaller carton. The same sweaters in a 45 × 40 × 30 cm box come out at about 11 kg volumetric. Send us the dimensions on WhatsApp before you tape the box and we will tell you exactly what it will bill at, and whether a different box saves you more than it costs.

Can I send bicycle parts or machine spares with oil and grease on them?

The part yes, the oil no, and the distinction is practical rather than bureaucratic. A chainset, a hub, a die, a gear assembly or a knitting-machine spare is ordinary cargo on this lane and we book it every week. What cannot travel is free lubricant: a grease tin, an oil bottle, a can of chain lube or a solvent for cleaning the part are all prohibited liquids, and a component still wet from the workshop bench will get pulled at sortation the moment oil shows through the carton. So wipe the part down, wrap it in poly sheet or VCI paper, tape the wrap, and lay an absorbent sheet in the bottom of the box. Dense metal parts bill on actual weight rather than volumetric, which makes them cheap to send relative to their value, and it is worth asking about declared-value cover before pickup if the assembly is expensive — standard courier liability is low next to what a machine spare costs to replace.

I want to pack mothballs in with the winter clothes. Is that allowed?

No — and it is the single most common reason a woollens consignment on this lane gets stopped. Naphthalene balls, camphor tablets and most moth repellents are classified as flammable solids and are excluded from courier networks on both surface and air, and aerosol moth sprays are refused separately as pressurised containers. There is also a practical reason beyond the rule: naphthalene vapour permeates the carton, the pallet and everything stacked around it, so a consignment carrying it can taint other people's goods and will be pulled for that alone. Do it the way the trade does it instead — wash and fully dry the woollens, vacuum or compression bag them, add a dry silica sachet if you are worried about damp on a 5–6 day run, and buy repellent in Ludhiana where it costs almost nothing. If you have already packed them, take them out before the rider seals the box; we would much rather find them at your table than have the consignment held four days up the line.
