Your parcel is handed into DTDC’s Bengaluru facility on the evening of collection. This is a short lane with a genuine one-to-two-day surface transit, so the evening cut-off matters more here than on long routes — miss it and you have lost the whole benefit of the distance.
Down to Malabar.
The direct road is the Mysuru–Gundlupet–Wayanad line and the descent of the Thamarassery churam, a hairpin ghat road that is the classic way into Kozhikode from Karnataka. It is also the fragile part: NH766 through Bandipur is shut to traffic between 9 pm and 6 am, and the churam is landslide-prone in monsoon, so freight is sometimes swung the longer way through Salem and Palakkad.

Last-mile off the Kozhikode hub. The 673xxx city belt — Mavoor Road, Nadakkavu, Kallai, Puthiyara, West Hill — is next-day off the hub. Kunnamangalam, Kattangal, Feroke and Ramanattukara are on daily runs. Vadakara, Koyilandy and the inland Wayanad-side pins usually take a working day more.

Be honest with yourself about express here: surface and express carry the same 1–2 day band on this short route, so in a normal week express buys you very little. It is worth the premium only in monsoon months, when the ghat is the variable and the air leg is not.

Kozhikode district sends a very large share of Bengaluru’s Malayali workforce, and this lane is essentially that population staying in touch with home. Onam parcels from late August, Eid clothes and gifts, things bought here because the range is better, and the ordinary weekly business of a family living in two places. Short lane, low rate, high frequency — a lot of our repeat customers on this route ship monthly.
Things for someone flying out to the Gulf
Malabar’s Gulf connection is generations deep and Kozhikode has its own international airport at Karipur. A recognisable booking on this lane is a parcel that has to reach someone in Kozhikode before their flight — clothes bought in Bengaluru, documents, a phone, a laptop, gifts to carry across. If there is a flight date attached, tell us the date at booking and we will work backwards from it rather than quoting a generic band.
Spice and provisions trade stock
Kozhikode has traded in pepper, cardamom, ginger and timber for centuries and its wholesale market still buys and sells across state lines. Packaging, labelling, dry samples, trade documents and small consignments move on this lane, often on a standing weekly slot at bulk rates. Both campuses sit outside the city — NIT at Kattangal and IIM Kozhikode at Kunnamangalam — and both generate steady parcel traffic from parents and relatives in Bengaluru. Books, bedding, winter jackets for the hill campus, a laptop, exam material, food from home. Hostel deliveries have their own addressing rules; the FAQ below spells out exactly what to write.
Small appliances and electronics
Mixers, induction plates, routers, printers, a boxed monitor — bought in Bengaluru for a household in Kozhikode because the choice is wider and the price is better. These travel fine on surface in original packaging with the invoice inside the carton. Batteries have their own rules, which is the next card.
Wedding and function shopping
Malabar weddings are large and the shopping for them is often done in Bengaluru — sarees, sherwanis, gift sets, decor items, printed invitation boxes. These are volumetric shipments almost by definition: big cartons, light contents. Common Bengaluru → Kozhikode misjudgements
- Kozhikode halwa and other oily, syrupy sweets — it comes up on this lane constantly and in both directions, so let us be direct about it. Halwa is dense, sticky and holds oil; under the weight of a stacked consignment it deforms, the oil comes through the box, and the whole parcel is pulled at sortation. Vacuum-packed, factory-sealed halwa in a rigid outer box with an invoice is sometimes accepted on surface — ring us first with the pack type. Loose halwa in a sweet-shop carton is a straight refusal.
- Attar and perfume oils — the Gulf gift culture around Malabar means attar moves in and out of Kozhikode all the time, and people assume a small bottle is harmless. It is alcohol-based fragrance, it is flammable, and it is refused on both surface and air. There is no small-quantity exemption.
- Coconut oil and banana chips fried in it — chips are the classic Kerala gift and they are perfectly fine when they are factory-sealed, dry and in a rigid box. Freshly fried chips in a bag still slick with oil are not. Coconut oil itself, in any quantity, is a liquid and never travels.
- Dried fish and dry prawns — a genuine Malabar staple and a genuine refusal. The smell alone means it cannot share a bag with other consignments, and it is refused at booking.
- Loose lithium cells and power banks — a battery inside a laptop or phone is accepted on surface; a spare cell, a loose power bank or anything above 100 Wh on the air leg is not. Flag any electronics at booking.

Your AWB number arrives on WhatsApp as soon as the parcel is booked into DTDC, and it is live on the public tracker at dtdc.in from that point. Delivery proof follows within the hour. For Kozhikode the practical advice is about geography rather than gates: put the recipient’s mobile on the AWB without exception, and if the address is outside the city core — Kunnamangalam, Kattangal, Feroke, Vadakara, Koyilandy — expect the rider to call before setting out, because those runs are planned around who answers. A phone that goes unanswered on an outlying Malabar pin becomes a second attempt the following working day.
Specific to Bangalore → Kozhikode.
Can I send sweets and snacks, including halwa, on this route?
Dry and sealed, yes. Oily and sticky, no — and halwa is the case that decides it. Factory-packed, vacuum-sealed halwa in a rigid outer carton with a tax invoice has a reasonable chance of being accepted on surface, and we will tell you yes or no when you describe the pack. Halwa bought loose from a sweet shop and boxed at home is refused, because it deforms under stacking weight, the oil comes through the packaging, and it damages every other parcel it travels with. The same test applies to everything else in the sweets category: sealed murukku, mixture, biscuits and dry chips travel freely; anything with syrup, ghee pooling or fresh frying oil on it does not.
Will monsoon rain on the Wayanad ghat delay my Kozhikode parcel?
It can, and on this specific lane it is the honest answer rather than a caveat. The direct route from Bengaluru drops into Malabar through the Thamarassery churam, a hairpin ghat section that is genuinely landslide-prone during the south-west monsoon in June, July and August. When it is closed or restricted, freight goes the long way around through Salem and Palakkad and the surface leg picks up a day or more. On top of that, NH766 through Bandipur is closed to all traffic between 9 pm and 6 am year-round, which already shapes the schedule. In the dry months the 1–2 day band holds well. In heavy monsoon weeks, either add slack or move to express, which is the one option the ghat cannot affect.
How do I address a parcel to a hostel at NIT Calicut or IIM Kozhikode?
Write the student’s full name, their mobile number, the hostel block and room number, then the institute name, then the pin code — in that order, and get the block right, because both campuses are large and neither is inside Kozhikode city. NIT Calicut is at Kattangal and IIM Kozhikode is at Kunnamangalam, both on daily delivery runs off the Kozhikode hub. Parcels to campuses are handed in at a hostel office or security point rather than to a room, so the student’s phone number is what actually completes the delivery. Two things not to send to a hostel: an unsealed food parcel, which will not survive a surface leg in Kerala humidity, and a loose power bank, which is refused at booking regardless of who it is for.
