02 — How this lane runs

Pickup across Bengaluru, north-west over the state line, delivery across Kolhapur and the Panchganga belt.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

60–90 minutes from your call in most of the city. This route is booked heavily by traders and retail buyers, so a fair share of our pickups are from shops and small offices on the western side — Rajajinagar, Vijayanagar, Basaveshwaranagar and the Nagarbhavi–Kengeri stretch. Tell us if the pickup is from a shop with a shutter time and we will fit the run before it, not after.

STEP

Bengaluru sortation.

Handed into DTDC's Bengaluru facility the same evening it is collected. Kolhapur is fed off the western trunk that runs up towards Pune and Mumbai, so it moves on a daily line rather than waiting for a load to build — which is why the transit band here matches destinations far closer to Bengaluru.

STEP

NH48 line-haul.

North-west through Chitradurga, Haveri, Hubballi-Dharwad and Belagavi, across into Maharashtra past Nipani, then the Kagal approach into Kolhapur. Flat, fast highway the whole way; the one thing that changes the picture is heavy rain in the Panchganga catchment in July and August, when the low-lying approaches on the city's river side genuinely slow down.

STEP

Kolhapur delivery.

Off the Kolhapur hub. The city — Shahupuri, Rajarampuri, Laxmipuri, the Mahadwar Road market and the Shiroli and Gokul Shirgaon industrial estates — is the fast part. Ichalkaranji, Jaysingpur, Kagal, Gadhinglaj and the Sangli–Miraj side are separate towns on their own beats, even though they share the same broad 416xxx pin family.

STEP

POD on WhatsApp.

Signature or stamped shop slip comes back to your WhatsApp within the hour of delivery. On market-street addresses we ask riders to note the shop name on the POD as well, because a signature alone is not much use when the consignment went to a wholesaler with six counters.

03 — Rate band on this lane

Starting rates, Bangalore → Kolhapur.

The billed weight is actual or volumetric, whichever comes out higher, plus the fuel surcharge current on your booking date. GST is charged separately.

  • Standard parcel (surface) from ₹120 / kg 2–3 working days. Min billable 5 kg.
  • Express parcel (air) from ₹180 / kg 1–2 working days. Door delivery.
  • Bulk consignment (35 kg+) from ₹120 / kg Min 35 kg. Surface routing.

Free pickup applies right across Bengaluru from 5 kg upward. The volumetric formula — (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000 — decides most bills here, and footwear is the lane's own trap: a carton of forty pairs of chappals weighs very little and measures enormous, so it bills on the box every single time. If you are sending sample pairs, take them out of their individual shoe boxes, wrap them in pairs and pack them flat — the same forty pairs can drop two volumetric slabs that way. Anything over 35 kg should be booked on the bulk band rather than as a heavy parcel.

04 — What goes Bangalore → Kolhapur

The chappal trade, jaggery and yarn, and Mahalaxmi wedding traffic.

Footwear samples, lasts and order sets

Kolhapur is the home of the Kolhapuri chappal, and Bengaluru is one of its biggest retail markets — boutiques, export houses and online sellers all buy from makers in and around the city. What moves out from here is the working half of that relationship: approved sample pairs going back for reference, lasts and sole patterns, size and grading sheets, printed branding labels, packaging inserts and dust bags. What comes back is finished stock. Pairs travel best flat and wrapped, not stacked in individual boxes.

Export and GI paperwork for leather buyers

Kolhapuri chappals carry a geographical indication, and buyers who sell them abroad or through marketplaces need a paper trail to match — signed purchase orders, artisan and unit declarations, GI usage authorisation copies, invoices and certificate-of-origin sets. These are small, deadline-bound envelopes that go express with the recipient named. We can courier the documents; we do not handle any customs or export clearance itself, so build that into your timeline separately.

Jaggery trade documents and packaging

Kolhapur runs one of the country's largest jaggery markets, and Bengaluru's sweet manufacturers, organic-food brands and bulk grocers buy from it. Out of Bengaluru go printed labels, laminated pouches, sealing film, shrink sleeves, lab test requests and signed contracts; back come solid jaggery blocks and powder, which travel perfectly well as long as they are dry and sealed. The liquid form does not travel at all — see the list below.

Yarn, shade cards and loom spares for Ichalkaranji

Ichalkaranji, half an hour from Kolhapur, is one of Maharashtra's densest powerloom towns, and it deals with Bengaluru on the technical side of textiles. Shade cards, lab dips, dye recipe sheets, small yarn cones for matching, beam and rapier spares, electronic jacquard cards and drive controllers. Small consignments, frequently urgent, and normally addressed to a mill rather than a house — which means the mill's own working hours decide the delivery, not ours.

Wedding and Mahalaxmi temple traffic

The Mahalaxmi temple pulls a steady stream of families to Kolhapur for weddings, thread ceremonies and vowed visits, and a lot of them fly or drive up from Bengaluru with no space for the boxes. Sarees and wedding outfits, printed invitations, gift sets, brass and puja articles and ceremonial items all go ahead by courier to a relative's house or a lodging. Send them a week early — a wedding is a fixed date and a courier is a range.

Kushti gear and training supplies

Kolhapur's wrestling taleems are not a tourist story, they are a live sport culture with schools, coaches and competitions. This lane carries mats and mat sections, grip trainers, weights, singlets and shoes, and sealed sports nutrition powders bought cheaper in Bengaluru. Powders in factory-sealed retail packs are fine. Anything in liquid or gel form, and anything unlabelled, is not — pack that thought before you pack the box.

05 — What you cannot send

A short, real list.

The first block is refused by DTDC and by every network we hand to. The second is what actually gets stopped on a lane feeding a leather, jaggery and textile town — quite different from what we pull on our southern routes:

Banned outright

  • Liquids, gels and pastes in any container
  • Spray cans, aerosols and gas-charged containers
  • Solvent adhesives, cements and rubber solution
  • Acids, bleaches and industrial chemicals
  • Matches, lighters and lighter fuel
  • Cash consignments, bullion and loose diamonds

Common Bengaluru → Kolhapur misjudgements

  • Sole cement, rubber solution and shoe adhesive — the classic on this route, sent by a buyer who wants a repair done to the same finish. It is a flammable solvent adhesive and it is refused in every tin size, including the small brush-top bottles. Buy it in Kolhapur; it is a footwear town and it is on every second shelf there.
  • Leather dyes, edge paints and finishing solutions — small bottles of colour matching sent with a sample pair. All liquid, most of them spirit-based, all refused. Send a dyed swatch or a Pantone reference instead and let the maker source the dye locally.
  • Liquid jaggery, kakvi and cane syrup — solid jaggery blocks, cubes and powder ship on this lane every week without any trouble. The pourable form is a liquid, it is heavy, it is packed in tins that dent, and it will be pulled at sortation. This is the one people argue about most, because it is agricultural and looks harmless.
  • Untanned hides, raw leather and offcuts with residual moisture — finished leather goods are fine. Raw or semi-processed hide is an organic material that leaks and carries odour through a shared line-haul, and it is refused in practice even where nobody would call it hazardous.
  • Liquid pre-workout, mass gainer shakes and unlabelled supplement powders — sealed retail tubs with a printed label and an invoice are acceptable. Bottled liquids are not, and a re-packed pouch with no label on it will be opened at sortation and held, which costs you the parcel and several days.
06 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.

You get the AWB number on WhatsApp as soon as the parcel is booked into DTDC, and the public tracker at dtdc.in will show you every scan on the way. Proof of delivery reaches you inside an hour of it landing. The thing that decides success on Kolhapur is the address type. A great many consignments here go to market-street shops around Mahadwar Road, Laxmipuri and Shahupuri, where the correct destination is a shop name and a landmark rather than a building number, and where the shutter comes down for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Give us the shop name, the owner's name and a mobile that gets answered. Industrial addresses at Shiroli and Gokul Shirgaon are stricter again — they take inward material within a fixed window and often want a gate pass raised against a named receiver.

07 — Three questions about this lane

Specific to Bangalore → Kolhapur.

The pin code starts with 416 but the address says Ichalkaranji, or Sangli. Is that still a Kolhapur booking?

It is delivered, but it is not the same beat and you should tell us before we book rather than after. The 416xxx family is shared across a whole cluster of towns in this corner of Maharashtra — Kolhapur city, Ichalkaranji, Jaysingpur, Kagal, Gadhinglaj, and Sangli and Miraj further along. People say "near Kolhapur" for all of them because that is how the region is described conversationally, but each is a separate delivery loop and the outlying ones are typically covered once a day rather than continuously. On express they will usually still land inside the 1–2 day band; on surface they tend to sit at the outer end of 2–3 days rather than the inner. Send us the complete address with the pin code on WhatsApp and we will tell you which loop it is on before you commit to anything with a date attached.

I'm sending sample chappals and packaging to a maker in Kolhapur. How should I pack them and what will they cost?

Take the pairs out of their individual shoe boxes, wrap each pair in tissue or a poly sleeve, and lay them flat in a single tight carton with the packaging material filling the gaps. That is not fussiness, it is money: footwear is the lightest bulky cargo we handle and it bills on volumetric weight — (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000 — so the box you choose is the price you pay. Forty pairs in their own boxes can measure out at double the volumetric weight of the same forty pairs packed flat, and the difference on a 615-kilometre lane is real. Surface starts at ₹120/kg, express at ₹180/kg, both before fuel surcharge and GST. Send us the carton's outside dimensions and rough weight on WhatsApp and we will tell you the billable number before the rider is dispatched, not after.

Express says 1–2 working days. Does my parcel actually fly to Kolhapur?

Not door to door, and it is fair to know that before you pay the express premium. Express on this lane means the consignment takes an air leg out of Bengaluru to the nearest network gateway that handles it, then completes to Kolhapur by road — that is how tier-two towns are served on every courier network in the country, not just this one. The practical consequences are worth weighing. Express reliably buys you a day over surface here, sometimes a clear day and a half, and it is genuinely worth it for documents, footwear samples with a buyer meeting attached, and loom spares holding up a shift. It is not worth it for a wedding parcel you are sending a week ahead or for jaggery and packaging stock, where surface at ₹120/kg does the same job for a third less. If the date matters, tell us the date and we will tell you which one to book.
