The parcel goes into DTDC’s Bengaluru facility the same evening it is collected. Kerala-bound freight is consolidated overnight, so a parcel handed over before the evening cut-off makes the next line-haul rather than waiting a day for the following one.

Commercial road freight to Kerala runs through Salem, Coimbatore and the Palakkad gap rather than the Bandipur forest road, because NH766 through Bandipur is closed to night traffic between 9 pm and 6 am. That is why the surface transit here is 2–3 days and not the single day the map distance suggests. Express moves on the air leg out of Kempegowda instead.

Pickup is free across Bengaluru on this lane for parcels 5 kg and above. Volumetric formula: (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000, which is the number that catches cartons of clothes. On a short lane like this one the express premium buys you roughly a day, so it is worth paying only when there is a date attached — an Onam sadya, a wedding, an office deadline. Otherwise surface is the sensible choice.

Onam and Vishu parcels home
The seasonal backbone of this lane. Bengaluru has one of the largest Malayali working populations outside Kerala, and from late August the direction of traffic is unmistakable — gifts, clothes, kids’ things and dry provisions going to families in Ernakulam district before Thiruvonam. Vishu in April is the second wave, smaller but just as concentrated. Book a week early in Onam season: everyone in this city has the same idea in the same fortnight.

Kochi’s IT cluster at Infopark and the SmartCity campus in Kakkanad pulls a constant flow of machines and peripherals out of Bengaluru — engineers transferring to a Kochi delivery centre, replacement hardware for a client site, monitors and docks for someone who has moved home to work remotely. Textiles and readymade stock for Ernakulam retail
Kochi is Kerala’s commercial capital and its buyers source constantly from Bengaluru’s garment trade. Sample lots, replenishment cartons and festive-season stock move on this lane in both surface and bulk, often on a repeat weekly slot. Cloth cartons are the classic volumetric trap — light contents, big box — so send us dimensions before you seal it.
Spice-trade and marine-export documentation
Ernakulam still runs on the spice and seafood export trades, and the paperwork that goes with them — signed contracts, inspection certificates, bank documents, customs and buyer originals — moves on express with the recipient’s mobile on the AWB. A very Ernakulam pattern: families with a member working in the Gulf, setting up or restocking a house in Kochi. Boxed appliances travel fine on surface as long as the original packaging is intact and the invoice travels with the carton.
Books, files and student kit
Bengaluru colleges empty into Kerala every semester break, and what does not fit into a bus seat comes to us — reference books, portfolio files, lab coats, a printer, a second monitor. Cheaper than paying for extra baggage, and there is nothing to carry through the terminal at either end.

DTDC and every air-network carrier prohibits these outright. The second card is the set we actually see attempted on Bengaluru → Kochi bookings — it is a very different list from what comes off a north Indian lane:

Common Bengaluru → Kochi misjudgements
- Coconut oil, in every size and brand — the single most attempted item on the Kerala lanes. Sealed factory bottles included. It is a liquid, it seeps under pressure, and it will be pulled at sortation. Buy it at the Kochi end; it is cheaper there anyway.
- Ayurvedic oils and medicated preparations — thailams, kashayams and oil-based massage preparations move heavily in both directions between Bengaluru and Kerala. Same rule: the oil is the problem, not the medicine. Tablets and sealed capsules in original packaging with a prescription are a separate question — ask us first.
- Wet chutney, sambar paste and pickle in oil — dry podi and rasam powder ship freely. The moment there is oil standing on top, it stops being shippable, glass jar or not.
- Loose lithium cells and power banks — this lane leaves from a tech city, so it comes up constantly. A battery sealed inside a laptop is fine on surface. A spare cell, a loose power bank or anything over 100 Wh on the air leg is refused. Flag laptops at booking so we route them correctly.
- Fresh and dried seafood — people genuinely try to send prawns and dry fish to relatives. It is perishable, it leaks, and it will contaminate everything in the same bag. Refused.

Two Kochi-specific things worth doing at booking: put the recipient’s mobile on the AWB, because most of Kaloor, Edappally and Kakkanad is flats with a security desk that will phone up before letting a rider in; and if the address is inside the Infopark or SmartCity campus at Kakkanad, add the company name and the block, since campus deliveries route through a reception rather than to a desk and an unnamed parcel sits there.

When should I book so an Onam parcel reaches Kochi in time?
Work backwards from Thiruvonam and give yourself a week of slack. Surface is 2–3 working days in normal conditions, but the fortnight before Onam is the heaviest fortnight of the year on every Bengaluru–Kerala lane, and volume itself adds a day at both the sorting and the delivery end. If you book eight to ten days out on surface you will be comfortable. If you have left it to the last three days, take express — 1–2 working days, and it moves on the air leg where the queue is shorter. Do not send anything perishable or oil-based as a festival gift; that is where Onam parcels get pulled.
Does “Kochi” cover Kakkanad, Aluva, Tripunithura and Fort Kochi?
Yes, all of them are served, and all of them sit in the 682xxx or adjoining Ernakulam pin series — but they do not all deliver on the same day off the hub. Central Kochi and the Kaloor–Palarivattom–Edappally–Vyttila belt is quickest. Kakkanad, Aluva and Tripunithura are on daily runs. Fort Kochi and Mattancherry take the longest per attempt because of the narrow lanes and one-ways in the old quarter. Give us the exact pin code and, for Kakkanad, the campus or building name — that single detail prevents most failed first attempts on this lane.
Will the June to August monsoon delay my parcel to Kochi?
It can, and it is worth planning around rather than being surprised by. The south-west monsoon hits Kerala first and hits it hard, and every road route from Bengaluru into Kerala crosses the Western Ghats. When a ghat section is closed for a landslide or waterlogging, freight is rerouted and the surface leg picks up a day or two — this is a genuine constraint, not a disclaimer. Through those months, either build slack into your dates or use express, which flies over the problem. If you are sending anything that must not get damp, ask us for an inner poly wrap before the carton is taped.
