02 — How this lane runs

South-west Bengaluru collections, NH44 across the Sutlej, delivery across the 144 series.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

Sixty to ninety minutes from your call across the core city. The south-western belt — JP Nagar, Uttarahalli, the Kanakapura Road corridor and the Banashankari side — carries a large share of this lane, partly because of the sports retailers, academies and school suppliers along that stretch and partly because a good many families with Doaba roots have settled there. Odd-shaped sports and workshop items get packed at your address rather than handed over loose, and you see the weight before anything is taped.

STEP

Bengaluru sortation.

Into the DTDC Bengaluru facility the same evening and scanned before the northbound departure. This is among the two or three longest domestic runs we book out of the city, and on a lane of this length the evening cut-off compounds harder than anywhere else — a consignment that misses tonight's load does not arrive an evening later, it arrives a working day later.

STEP

NH44 to the Doaba.

Hyderabad, Nagpur, Jhansi, Gwalior, Agra, past Delhi to Ambala, then Ludhiana, the Sutlej crossing at Phillaur and on into Jalandhar. A single trunk corridor without a ghat section or a diversion season, which is the reason 2,520 kilometres still runs to a workable 5–6 day band. Express takes the air leg out of Kempegowda and cuts it to 3–4, and at this distance that saving is usually worth the money rather than merely nice to have.

STEP

Jalandhar delivery.

Last mile across the 144 series. Model Town, Urban Estate, the Nakodar Road colonies and Guru Nanak Pura deliver to the door on a phone call. The manufacturing side does not: the sports-goods bastis on the west of the city, the Focal Point estates and the tool and instrument workshops are shop-front and shed addresses with narrow approaches and their own receiving hours. Phagwara, Kapurthala, Nakodar and the cantonment are separate pin codes with beats of their own.

STEP

POD on WhatsApp.

Whatever the receiver gives — a signature image, a stamped slip, a workshop's gate entry — comes back to you inside an hour of the delivery scan, on the same number that booked the pickup.

03 — Rate band on this lane

Starting rates, Bangalore → Jalandhar.

Charged on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater, plus the fuel surcharge applying on your booking date. GST is added separately.

  • Standard parcel (surface) from ₹120 / kg 5–6 working days. Min billable 5 kg.
  • Express parcel (air) from ₹180 / kg 3–4 working days. Door delivery.
  • Bulk consignment (35 kg+) from ₹120 / kg Min 35 kg. Surface routing.

Pickup is free from any Bengaluru address on this route once the consignment reaches 5 kg. Volumetric weight is (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 5000, and this lane produces the strangest version of that arithmetic on the whole site: a great deal of what moves here is air with a skin around it. An inflated ball, a stuffed goalkeeping glove, a padded kitbag and a moulded case are all shapes that bill enormously and weigh almost nothing. Deflate, flatten and nest wherever the item permits it — the question below works the numbers through. December and January fog on the plain can also cost the surface leg a day.

04 — What goes Bangalore → Jalandhar

Team-sports gear, surgical instruments, hand tools and the Doaba's paperwork.

Team-sports equipment going back to its makers

Jalandhar is the country's centre for the team-game side of sports manufacturing — footballs, volleyballs, basketballs and other stitched inflatables, hockey sticks and goalkeeping kit, nets, athletics and training equipment — and much of it is made for export as well as for the Indian market. What travels north on this lane is the return half of the relationship with Bengaluru's clubs, academies, schools and retailers: warranty replacements, defective lots going back to a supplier, approved samples returning with comments, and reorder specifications. Deflate anything inflatable before it is packed, and put the supplier's order reference on the box so a stores desk can identify it without opening it.

Gym and fitness-equipment spares

The other half of Jalandhar's sports trade is fitness hardware, and Bengaluru's gyms and equipment dealers work with it constantly. Cable assemblies, pulleys, bearings and bushes, weight-stack pins, upholstered pads and grips, and small motor and controller parts move both ways between a Bengaluru service outfit and a Jalandhar manufacturer or its ancillary. Dense metal parts bill on actual weight, which makes this cheap freight relative to value — but pads and upholstered pieces are the opposite, so tell us which is which when you ask for a quote.

Surgical instruments and hospital-equipment samples

Jalandhar carries a long-established surgical instrument and hospital furniture cluster, and Bengaluru's hospitals, distributors and medical-device firms buy from it. On this lane that means sample instrument sets going up for approval, catalogue and specification packs, tender and registration paperwork, and instruments travelling back to a maker for repair, re-sharpening or a replacement handle. All sharps need to be individually sheathed and rigidly boxed and declared honestly on the waybill — the note below explains where the line falls between an instrument we can carry and one we cannot.

Hand tools, fasteners and workshop items

Spanners, wrenches, pliers, vices, clamps, punches and fastener sets are a Jalandhar trade of long standing, and Bengaluru workshops, fabricators and hardware dealers are steady customers. Consignments on this lane are typically small, heavy and unglamorous — a returned lot, a replacement set, a die or a gauge going back to be reworked. Heavy and compact is the cheapest shape a parcel can be, so this is one of the few categories where a long lane costs surprisingly little; ask about the bulk band once you cross 35 kg.

Powers of attorney and property papers for Doaba families

Few parts of India have as high a concentration of overseas households as the Doaba, and Jalandhar is its centre. The paperwork that follows those families never stops moving: powers of attorney, property and mutation records, succession and affidavit sets, bank and pension documents, notarised copies going to a family lawyer or an agent in Jalandhar while the owners are abroad and a relative in Bengaluru is holding the originals. Express, always, with the recipient's mobile on the AWB, and tell us if a registry appointment or a submission date is attached.

Campus cartons for the Phagwara and Kapurthala colleges

The universities and colleges on the Jalandhar–Phagwara stretch of the GT Road take students from across the country, Karnataka included, and this lane carries the domestic half of that — reference sets and printed notes, a monitor, bedding and a quilt before the northern winter, a kettle, replacement chargers, and the cartons that go home at the end of a session. Address these with the campus, the hostel or block, the room number and the student's own mobile, and read the question below about Phagwara pin codes before you write Jalandhar on the box.

05 — What you cannot send

A short, real list.

The network prohibitions come first. The second card is written for what this city's trades actually put in boxes — adhesives, sharps and the documents an overseas family sends home:

Banned outright

  • Liquids, adhesives and solvents of every kind
  • Aerosols and pressurised containers
  • Compressed gas cartridges and inflators
  • Flammable solids, matches and lighters
  • Currency, foreign exchange and bullion
  • Alcohol, tobacco and perishables

Where Bengaluru → Jalandhar bookings go wrong

  • Rubber solution, latex cement and ball-stitching adhesive — the signature refusal of the sports trade, sent north with a sample or a repair item so the maker can see the compound being used. Every one of these is a flammable liquid or solvent and none can be booked on either service. Send the item, photograph the tin's label, and let the chemistry stay where it is.
  • CO2 cartridges and compressed-gas ball inflators — a hand pump, a needle set and a pressure gauge are ordinary cargo and travel without comment. A gas cartridge is a pressurised container and is excluded outright, and a single one buried in a kitbag will hold up an entire consignment while it is located.
  • Used or unsterilised instruments coming back from a hospital — this is the line that matters on the surgical side, and it is not about the blade. A new, clean, individually sheathed instrument in a rigid box with an honest declaration is carriable. An instrument that has been through a procedure and has not been documented as decontaminated is treated as clinical waste, and clinical waste is outside courier carriage entirely. If a set is going back for repair, have it cleaned and sterilised first and say so on the packing note.
  • Foreign currency, cheques and drafts in a document envelope — the recurring one on a lane with this many overseas households. Currency of any country is prohibited on every courier network without exception. Cheques, bank drafts and pay orders are not prohibited in the same way but they are financial instruments with no meaningful cover if they go missing, so if one has to travel, send it express, record the number before it leaves, and ask us about declared-value cover rather than assuming standard liability will help.
  • Full-size furniture and anything past a courier's dimensional limit — worth saying plainly, because the furniture workshops around Kartarpur are close enough to Jalandhar that people ask. A parcel network is not a furniture mover: beds, wardrobes, dining sets and large panels cannot be booked whatever they weigh. Fittings, hardware, hinges, handles, veneer samples, catalogues and small components all move perfectly well, and for the rest you want a part-load transporter, not us.
06 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.

The AWB number is sent to your WhatsApp within minutes of booking, the consignment can be followed at dtdc.in at any hour, and the POD image reaches you inside an hour of the signature. Jalandhar splits neatly into two last miles and it is worth knowing which one your parcel is going into. The planned colonies — Model Town, Urban Estate, the Nakodar Road and Guru Nanak Pura side — are ordinary door deliveries that need a house number, the colony and a mobile. The manufacturing districts are a different matter. The sports-goods workshops sit in dense residential-industrial neighbourhoods on the west of the city where units are known by the proprietor's name and the basti far more reliably than by any number, where a vehicle gets in during the morning and struggles later, and where a great many units are single-shed operations that shut at lunch. A consignment there wants the basti or road name, the firm's name as it is written on its letterhead, and a phone that is answered from the shop floor. The Focal Point estates work like any industrial estate — plot number, registered unit name, stores contact and the receiving cut-off, and we will time the attempt to land inside it. And note that Phagwara, Kapurthala, Nakodar, Adampur and the cantonment are all separate pin codes on separate beats even though people speak of them as Jalandhar; give us the pin code rather than the city name and we will quote the right lane the first time.

07 — Three questions about this lane

Specific to Bangalore → Jalandhar.

I'm sending a set of footballs back to a Jalandhar supplier. Should I deflate them, and what does it save?

Deflate them, and the saving is large enough that it is the single most useful thing on this page. You are billed on the higher of the scale weight and the volumetric weight, which is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5000, and a ball is the worst possible shape for that formula because it is almost entirely air. Ten match footballs packed inflated need something like a 60 × 50 × 45 cm carton, which measures out at 27 kg volumetric — so at the surface starting rate you are looking at from about ₹3,240 before fuel surcharge and GST, for a consignment that weighs under 5 kg on the scale. Let the air out, stack them flat and they fit a 45 × 35 × 25 cm box: 7.9 kg volumetric, from about ₹948 on the same rate. Same balls, roughly a third of the bill. Use a proper inflation needle to deflate rather than forcing the valve, keep the needle and pump out of the box if it uses gas cartridges, interleave the balls with paper so the panels do not rub over a 2,520 kilometre surface run, and put the supplier's reference on the outside. Send us the carton dimensions on WhatsApp before you tape it and we will confirm the billable figure.

My family's property paperwork is in Jalandhar and I hold the originals in Bengaluru. How should I send a power of attorney?

Express, addressed to a named person, and with a little more care than an ordinary parcel deserves. On a lane running into the Doaba this is one of the most common bookings we handle, and the anxieties are always the same: the papers are irreplaceable, there is usually a date, and the person receiving them is often acting for a family that is not in the country. So do it this way. Put the documents flat in a rigid envelope or a document box rather than folded into a courier pouch, because a notarised or registered set that arrives creased across the seals invites questions at the registry. Photograph or scan every page before it leaves your hands — that costs ten minutes and it is the only real insurance you have. Address it to a named individual with a mobile number on the AWB, not to a firm, because a lawyer's clerk will accept for a named advocate and will not accept an unaddressed envelope. Book express so it lands in 3–4 working days rather than 5–6, and if there is a registry appointment, tell us the date at booking so we can confirm the air movement the same evening. Ask about declared-value cover before pickup; standard courier liability is a fixed low sum that bears no relation to what re-executing a power of attorney from abroad would cost you.

My son's college address says Phagwara, not Jalandhar. Do I still book it to Jalandhar?

No — book it to the address and the pin code that are printed on the college's own communication, and tell us both when you ask for a quote. Several of the largest campuses that people describe as being at Jalandhar are actually on the GT Road stretch toward Phagwara, which is in Kapurthala district and carries its own pin code, and the same is true of Kapurthala town, Nakodar and Adampur. All of them are served and the transit band is the same or a day beyond Jalandhar city, but they are different beats and they are quoted as their own lanes, so writing Jalandhar on a box that belongs at a Phagwara pin code simply sends it to the wrong sorting point and costs you a day. Beyond the pin code, the things that make a campus delivery succeed are the same everywhere and are worth repeating: the hostel or block name, the room number, the student's registration number if the campus uses one, and the student's own mobile. Large campuses receive parcels at a central mail room with hours of its own and they will not hunt for a name they cannot match to a room. If the consignment is going in the first weeks of a session or in the last fortnight before a break, add a couple of days to your plan — those are the two windows in which a campus mail room is buried.
