What you’ll need at pickup.
Ireland clears under European Union rules, which is the practical difference between this lane and the UK one — same island group, different rulebook. Revenue runs an efficient operation at Dublin and a clean parcel moves quickly; an ambiguous one sits.
KYC of the sender
A single photo ID for the person named on the airway bill — Aadhaar, passport or licence, all equally acceptable. We photograph it at the door and keep it only as long as DTDC’s record requires. The name on the ID and the name on the AWB have to be the same one.
Declaration under EU rules
Ireland assesses the parcel against the EU tariff, so the description must be specific enough to classify — “silk saree, 1 piece” rather than “clothes”. Commercial consignments need a printed invoice with HS codes and an EORI number for the Irish business receiving them. Gifts between private individuals are treated more simply, and the EU does allow relief on low-value personal gifts; we will confirm the current figure at booking rather than print one that may have changed.
Prescription, for medicines
Ireland regulates medicines through the HPRA. Send only the prescribed quantity in original sealed strips, with a copy of the prescription showing the doctor’s registration number and a line naming the condition. No liquids, no injectables, no controlled substances. Anything that looks like a commercial quantity will be stopped, however innocent the intention.
What Ireland doesn’t let in.
These come from Revenue and from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Ireland is an island with a large agri-food economy, and its biosecurity controls are noticeably tighter than the EU average — a parcel that would pass in Frankfurt can be opened in Dublin.
Don’t even try
- Meat and dairy in personal parcels — EU rules bar both from outside the Union, and Ireland enforces them keenly. Ghee, khoya sweets, milk-based mithai and dried meat all fall inside this.
- Seeds, plants, soil and untreated wood — DAFM plant-health controls. Curry-leaf cuttings, tulsi seeds and unfumigated wooden handicraft are all refused.
- Fresh produce of any kind — no fruit, no vegetables, no fresh coconut, whatever the packing.
- Agarbatti, dhoop and camphor — flammable solids, refused on the air leg regardless of destination.
- Weapons, replicas and decorative blades — including ceremonial swords and martial-arts equipment, which Irish customs treats without leniency.
- CBD, hemp products and vape liquids — restricted; do not pack them into a family parcel.
- Counterfeit branded goods — seized at Dublin as a matter of routine.
- Aerosols, loose lithium cells, power banks above 100 Wh, all liquids — universal air-cargo rules.
Allowed with care
- Filter coffee powder and dry podis — sealed, factory-packed, ingredients and allergens printed. These clear routinely and make up most of the food volume on this lane.
- Sealed dry savouries — chakli, mixture, murukku, banana chips in commercial packaging. Allergen labelling matters in the EU, so keep the original pack rather than decanting into a tin.
- Silk sarees and stitched clothing — Mysore silk, Kanjeevaram, cottons. Declare a fair value and describe the item precisely.
- Books, documents and printed matter — straightforward; give a title and a nominal value.
- Sandalwood soap and powder — accepted as ordinary manufactured goods. The oil counts as a liquid and cannot go.
- Small electronics and non-precious jewellery — declare make, model and value. Precious metal does not ship on this network.
The Dublin tech move, and everything that follows it.
This lane exists largely because of one migration pattern: engineers who worked for a company in Bengaluru and moved to that company’s European base in Ireland. The parcels follow the people — first the relocation boxes, then the family visits, then the children, then the food from home.
Bengaluru-to-Dublin tech families
Grand Canal Dock, Sandyford, Citywest, Lucan, Leixlip, Adamstown, Clonee. A large part of Dublin’s Indian workforce came from Bengaluru offices of the same employers, which is why this route runs steadily rather than seasonally. Household items, clothing, prescription tablets against paperwork, and the provisions that are hard to find outside a handful of Dublin Asian stores.
Students on the stay-back route
Trinity, UCD, DCU, University of Galway, University of Limerick, MTU Cork. Ireland’s post-study stay-back for master’s graduates makes it a deliberate choice rather than a fallback, and the parcels reflect that — full setting-up-a-home shipments in August and September, not just books. Give us the campus residence name and the Eircode.
Cork and Galway, not just Dublin
Cork’s technology and pharmaceutical employers and Galway’s medical-device cluster both draw Indian professionals, and delivery outside the capital is entirely routine. Rural and small-town addresses are where the Eircode earns its keep — many Irish country addresses have no street number at all.
Filter coffee and South Indian provisions
The defining cargo of this lane. Sealed filter coffee powder, sambar and rasam podi, vathal and dry vadam, factory-packed chakli. All of it clears when it is commercially packed and labelled. Ghee, homemade chutney and milk sweets do not, and no amount of careful wrapping changes that.
Samples and small B2B consignments
Bengaluru product companies with an Irish or European entity send prototypes, samples and marketing collateral to Dublin regularly, and a smaller flow of D2C stock goes to Irish stockists. Commercial invoice with HS codes, the receiver’s EORI number, and a note of any meeting date so we can route for it.

Ireland is next to Britain — is the paperwork the same?
No, and this is the most useful thing to understand before you ship. Ireland is a member of the European Union and clears your parcel under EU customs rules, against the EU’s common tariff, with Irish import VAT applied at the Irish rate. Great Britain left the EU and now runs its own regime entirely. So two parcels leaving Bengaluru on the same evening, one for Dublin and one for London, are assessed under two separate rulebooks with different thresholds, different reliefs and different numbers required from the receiver — an Irish business needs an EU EORI, a British one needs a GB EORI, and they are not interchangeable. Geography suggests they are the same lane; customs is clear that they are not. We document each one for its own destination, which is the whole reason these are separate pages.
What is an Eircode and does my parcel really need one?
It is Ireland’s postcode, seven characters long, and unlike almost every other postal code in the world it identifies a single individual building rather than a street or a district. It matters more here than a postcode does elsewhere because Irish addresses, particularly outside the cities, frequently have no house number and sometimes several houses share a townland name. Without the Eircode a courier in County Galway is genuinely guessing. Ask your family for it — everyone in Ireland knows theirs, it is on their utility bills — and we will put it on the label. Parcels to Dublin apartments also need the apartment number and block, because a development of three hundred units will not be resolved by a building name alone.
My relative works at a tech campus in Dublin. Can we deliver to the office?
Better not to. Most large Dublin campuses route deliveries through a security or facilities desk that will not accept personal parcels for staff, and a refused delivery at a corporate address costs several days while the parcel is held and re-attempted. Send it to the home address with the Eircode and the apartment number instead. If nobody is home during the day, an An Post or courier depot collection is usually offered on the first failed attempt, and the recipient can pick it up with photo ID. One thing worth telling them in advance: if Revenue assesses VAT or duty on arrival, the charge is collected from them before delivery, usually through a payment link. It is not something we can settle from Bengaluru, and it is not included in the rate we quote you.
