Roughly 1,880 kilometres to the west bank of the Hooghly — 4–5 working days on DTDC surface, 2–3 by air express. Howrah runs on the 711xxx pin series and is booked as its own lane, not as part of Kolkata. Free pickup anywhere in Bengaluru at 5 kg and above, and on this route most of it is the industrial west and north — Peenya, Yeshwanthpur, Jalahalli and Rajajinagar.

02 — How this lane runs

Collected in Bengaluru's engineering belt, hauled east, delivered across the 711xxx grid.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

Most bookings on this lane come off the industrial west — Peenya Phase I to IV, Yeshwanthpur, Jalahalli and the Rajajinagar workshop streets. Those are unit-to-unit collections, so tell us the shed or plot number and whether the estate needs a gate entry made in the security register; we allow a two-hour window there rather than the 60–90 minutes we quote in the residential core. The rider carries a scale, strapping and tape, and heavy items are weighed and sealed in front of you.

STEP

Bengaluru sortation.

Booked into the DTDC Bengaluru facility the same evening. Machine parts and castings are dense, so the weight slab is usually settled at this point and there is rarely a volumetric surprise later — the opposite of what happens with the clothing cartons that dominate most long lanes out of this city.

STEP

Line-haul to the east.

The freight tracks the eastern seaboard through the Andhra and Odisha corridor and reaches the Kolkata metro from the Howrah side — trunk vehicles come in off NH16 and the Kona approach, which is west-bank ground, before anything crosses the river. Surface is 4–5 working days over the full 1,880 kilometres. Express lifts from Kempegowda, clears through the Kolkata air hub and moves to the Howrah beats by road in 2–3.

STEP

Howrah delivery.

Off the west-bank beats across 711xxx. Salkia, Shibpur, Bally, Liluah, Belur and the Andul Road stretch are worked daily. The Sankrail and Dhulagarh industrial and warehousing belt is a scheduled beat with gate hours, and the Domjur and Jagatballavpur side of the district sits further out again — a pin code decides which of those you are on, so give us all six digits.

STEP

POD on WhatsApp.

Signed slip or signature image, forwarded to you on WhatsApp within the hour of handover. For consignee firms we can also send the receiving stamp image, which is what most accounts departments actually want against the invoice.

03 — Rate band on this lane

Starting rates, Bangalore → Howrah.

Billed on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher, plus the fuel surcharge applying on the day you book. GST is charged separately.

  • Standard parcel (surface) from ₹120 / kg 4–5 working days. Min billable 5 kg.
  • Express parcel (air) from ₹180 / kg 2–3 working days. Door delivery.
  • Bulk consignment (35 kg+) from ₹120 / kg Min 35 kg. Surface routing.

Pickup is free across Bengaluru at 5 kg and above, industrial estates included. Volumetric weight is (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000. Engineering cargo usually bills on actual weight rather than volume, but the packing has to earn that — a 20 kg casting in a thin carton will be repacked before it is accepted, and we would rather do that at your gate than have it argued over at the hub. Consignments above ₹50,000 moving on a GST invoice need a valid e-way bill travelling with them.

04 — What goes Bangalore → Howrah

Engineering spares, foundry and mill inputs, and the families of Bengaluru's shop-floor workforce.

Machine spares and tooling from Peenya

The backbone of this route. Peenya's machine-tool, pump, fastener and precision-turning units supply buyers all over the country, and Howrah's engineering cluster — the belt that earned the town its old Sheffield-of-Bengal nickname — is a standing customer for exactly that kind of part. Bearings, gears, valve internals, dies, cutting tools, hydraulic fittings. Dense, high-value, low-volume: the cheapest thing on this lane to ship and the easiest to under-pack.

Castings, patterns and sample components

Movement runs both ways between Bengaluru design shops and Howrah's foundries. A pattern or a first-article casting travels south for inspection, an approved sample or a corrected drawing set travels back. These are awkward parcels — heavy, irregular, sharp-edged — and they need a wooden crate or a strapped double-wall box with the weight distributed, not a single carton with a lump rolling around inside it.

Electrical, instrumentation and control gear

Panel meters, drives, contactors, sensors, PLC modules and switchgear ordered from Bengaluru distributors for mill and workshop maintenance on the Howrah side. Electronics of this kind survive the road leg well if they stay in the manufacturer's foam and outer carton; what damages them is a re-boxing done to save a few rupees on volume. Anti-static bags stay on.

Commercial documents and tender sets

Signed contracts, drawing sets, inspection certificates, test reports, original invoices and sealed tender submissions going to buyers, contractors and clearing agents in Howrah. Always express when a submission window is involved, and always with the recipient's direct mobile on the AWB — a tender envelope that reaches a general reception desk is a tender envelope that sits there.

Family parcels from the Bengaluru shop floor

Bengal's engineering and technician workforce has a long presence in Bengaluru's industrial west, and the parcels that go back from Yeshwanthpur and Rajajinagar are ordinary and constant — clothes for children, a phone bought here, school and college certificates, medicines in their prescription packs, gifts before the festival season. Small, usually under 5 kg, and the reason we quote the minimum billable weight so often on this route.

Student and hostel shipments to Shibpur

Howrah has a serious engineering student population, IIEST at Shibpur being the obvious anchor, and the traffic follows the academic calendar rather than the festival one. Books and reference sets, a laptop, a monitor, project hardware, bedding and a trunk at the start of term and the same going home at the end of it. Books are dense and cheap by weight, which makes surface the sensible answer for almost all of it.

05 — What you cannot send

A short, real list.

Prohibited by DTDC and across the network. The second block is what actually gets refused on an industrial lane out of Bengaluru, which is a different set of mistakes from the ones we see on household routes:

Banned outright

  • Compressed gas — cylinders, cartridges and pressurised cans
  • Flammable liquids, thinners and solvent-based cleaners
  • Explosives, detonators and pyrotechnic devices
  • Corrosive acids and unlabelled chemicals
  • Currency notes, bullion and precious stones
  • Radioactive sources and industrial isotopes

Common Bengaluru → Howrah misjudgements

  • Cutting oil, coolant and hydraulic fluid sent with the machine part — the part ships, the sample bottle of fluid does not. This is the single most frequent refusal on the lane, because it feels harmless when a supplier tapes a 200 ml bottle to the crate. It is a flammable or combustible liquid and it comes out at booking.
  • Aerosol lubricant, rust remover and contact cleaner — the workshop cans that live on every bench. Pressurised, propellant-driven, and refused on both the surface and the air leg regardless of how small the can is.
  • Lead-acid and UPS batteries — panel backup batteries and inverter cells cannot travel on the network. They are wet-cell, they are corrosive, and there is no packing standard that makes them acceptable in a parcel. Send them through a hazardous-goods freight agent instead.
  • Strong permanent magnets shipped loose — very specific to this lane, because motor, sensor and speaker components move on it constantly. An unshielded magnet assembly is treated as dangerous goods on the air leg. Tell us if there is a magnet in the box and we will route it on surface and shield the packing.
  • Scrap metal, cut-offs and dead machinery for recycling — Howrah's scrap and re-rolling trade generates these enquiries every week. Scrap consignments are refused; a working machine or a repairable unit with a declared value and an invoice is a normal booking and moves fine.
06 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.

The AWB reaches you on WhatsApp as soon as the parcel is booked in, and you can follow the whole eastward run at dtdc.in. Two Howrah specifics are worth knowing before you book. First, the pin: Howrah is 711xxx, Kolkata is 700xxx, and they are separate lanes on separate beats even though a bridge is all that divides them — an address written simply as "Howrah, Kolkata" is the commonest cause of a day's delay on this route, so send the full six digits. Second, goods-vehicle timing across the river crossings and along the older GT Road stretches means the Salkia and Shibpur lanes are worked in fixed windows rather than on demand; the Sankrail and Dhulagarh industrial addresses close their gates in the evening and will not accept a delivery after that. A recipient mobile on the AWB solves nearly all of it, because the rider can call ahead and land inside the window.

07 — Three questions about this lane

Specific to Bangalore → Howrah.

Is Howrah quoted the same as Kolkata, since it is just across the bridge?

No, and it is worth understanding why rather than assuming it is a technicality. Howrah is a separate municipal corporation and a separate district on the west bank of the Hooghly, and it carries its own 711xxx pin series against Kolkata's 700xxx. Deliveries are worked by west-bank beats, and river-crossing timings mean the two sides genuinely do not run on the same clock. In practice the transit and the starting rate come out close to the Kolkata figures — 4–5 working days on surface, 2–3 by air, from ₹120/kg — but the booking is made against your actual Howrah pin, not against Kolkata. The reason we are firm about this is delivery accuracy: parcels addressed vaguely to "Kolkata" that are actually for Shibpur or Liluah get sorted to the wrong bank and lose a day getting back. Give us the pin at booking and none of that happens.

Can I send a 30 kg machine part or casting from Bangalore to Howrah?

Yes, and it is routine on this lane. Above 35 kg you move into the bulk band, which is also from ₹120/kg on surface routing, so a heavy single piece is usually cheaper per kilo than people expect. What matters is the packing, and we are strict about it because a 30 kg part in a weak box damages everything around it on a four-to-five day road run. It needs a wooden crate or a heavy double-wall carton with the item immobilised, edges protected, and the load strapped rather than just taped. We will crate at your unit in Peenya or Yeshwanthpur if you ask when booking. Machined and finished surfaces should be oiled and wrapped by you before we arrive — but note that we cannot carry a separate bottle of that oil in the same consignment. Declare the value and attach the invoice; the e-way bill is required above ₹50,000.

How long does delivery take to Sankrail, Dhulagarh or the Domjur side?

Add roughly a working day to the city figure for the outer industrial and rural belt of Howrah district, and plan around gate hours rather than around the transit time. The core town beats — Salkia, Shibpur, Bally, Liluah, Belur — are worked daily and take the standard 4–5 working days on surface. The Sankrail and Dhulagarh warehousing and industrial estates are a scheduled beat with security gates that shut in the evening and often do not receive on Sundays, so a parcel arriving late in the day waits for the next opening. Domjur, Jagatballavpur and the addresses further into the district are on a longer run again. If your consignee is a factory or a warehouse, give us the unit's receiving hours along with the pin and the storekeeper's number, and we will time the attempt instead of burning one.
