02 — How this lane runs

Collected in central and east Bengaluru, run the eastern seaboard to the foothills, then up the river valley.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

Old Airport Road, Domlur, CV Raman Nagar and Cooke Town are where this lane gets booked from, and they are among the easier addresses in the city to reach quickly — 60–90 minutes on a normal day. Packing is done at your door: corner protection, double-taped seams, and a written weight before anything is sealed. On a route that ends with a mountain road, a box that will not survive being restacked twice is a box that arrives damaged.

STEP

Bengaluru sortation.

Handover into the DTDC Bengaluru facility the same evening and onto the northbound trunk. On a lane of this length the difference between a morning booking and a late-evening one is a whole day at the far end, so if the parcel is ready, call before the afternoon.

STEP

Seaboard line-haul to Siliguri.

The freight runs the length of the eastern seaboard into Bengal and then north through Malda into the narrow corridor of land that carries every road link to Sikkim and the Northeast. Siliguri is where the plains journey ends. The express service instead flies from Kempegowda into Bagdogra, which sits on the same plain a short run from the foot of the hills — Sikkim's own airstrip at Pakyong has only limited scheduled service, so Bagdogra is the practical air gateway either way.

STEP

NH10 up the Teesta valley, and Gangtok delivery.

From Siliguri the road follows the Teesta river up through Sevoke, Rangpo and Singtam into Sikkim. It is a river-valley highway cut into unstable slopes, and it is the only real artery into the state — that single fact shapes this whole lane and is covered properly in the delivery notes below. Gangtok itself is on the 737xxx pin series and delivers across Deorali, Tadong, Ranipool, Development Area, Arithang and the ridge above MG Marg.

STEP

POD on WhatsApp.

A signature, a stamped receipt or a photograph at the door reaches your WhatsApp thread within the hour of the consignment being handed across.

03 — Rate band on this lane

Starting rates, Bangalore → Gangtok.

Charged on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater, with the fuel surcharge current on your booking date. GST extra.

  • Standard parcel (surface) from ₹120 / kg 5–6 working days. Min billable 5 kg.
  • Express parcel (air) from ₹180 / kg 3–4 working days. Door delivery.
  • Bulk consignment (35 kg+) from ₹120 / kg Min 35 kg. Surface routing.

There is no pickup charge at any Bengaluru address from 5 kg upwards. Volumetric weight is (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000. Express earns its premium more clearly on this lane than on almost any other we run, and not only because it is faster: getting the consignment to the foot of the hills two or three days sooner materially reduces the chance of it sitting out a road closure on the wrong side of the valley. Between June and September, treat both bands as guidance rather than promise and read the delivery notes before you commit to a date.

04 — What goes Bangalore → Gangtok

Parcels home to Sikkimese families, hotel and homestay stock, organic-produce trade material, and student traffic.

Parcels home to Sikkimese families

The backbone of this lane. Bengaluru employs a large Sikkimese and Darjeeling-hills community — hospitality staff, café and restaurant crews, salon and wellness professionals, nurses and a widening tech-park layer — and much of it lives around Domlur, CV Raman Nagar, Cooke Town and the old cantonment side. What goes home is what any working household sends: clothing, a phone, medicines in original packaging, school material, and gifts before Dashain, Tihar and Losar, when volume climbs sharply for two or three weeks at a stretch.

Hotel, homestay and café supplies

Tourism is Sikkim's largest visible industry and the properties in and above Gangtok restock ahead of the spring and autumn seasons. Bengaluru supplies a lot of the back-of-house: printed menus, signage and brand collateral, linen and uniforms, espresso equipment and grinders, POS and billing hardware, small kitchen electricals and décor lines. Almost all of it is light and bulky and prices on volumetric weight, so send carton dimensions with your enquiry rather than an estimate of the kilos.

Packaging and brand material for the organic trade

Sikkim is a fully organic-farming state, and that certification is the marketing story behind a whole category of small producers — large cardamom, turmeric, buckwheat, ginger, tea and honey brands selling direct to customers across the country. The produce moves on its own freight, but the material around it comes from cities like Bengaluru: printed pouches and cartons, labels and seals, tin caddies, sample packs, trade-fair display material and e-commerce despatch packaging. It moves as bulk consignment over 35 kg on the same starting rate.

Student and admission traffic

Sikkim sends a steady stream of students to Bengaluru's colleges and takes a return flow of paperwork and equipment. Mark sheets, transcripts, admission and verification documents, laptops travelling for a repair or a replacement, books and reference material before a term, and bedding and trunks going home at the end of a year. Documents with a date attached belong on express with a mobile number on the AWB; books and bedding are dense or bulky respectively and belong on surface.

Outdoor and trekking equipment

North Sikkim's trekking and high-altitude routes pull gear up this lane from Bengaluru's outdoor retailers, both from shops restocking and from individuals shipping ahead of a trip rather than paying airline excess baggage. Rucksacks, sleeping bags and mats, tents, layers, boots and poles all travel without complication on surface. Fuel and pressurised canisters do not — the second card below is worth reading before you tape the box.

Small consumer stock for Gangtok's retail trade

Gangtok is the distribution point for most of the state, and Bengaluru is a serious source of the small goods that pass through it — phone and computer accessories, garments and footwear, small electricals, packaged consumer lines and spares. These go as bulk consignments. Send a tax invoice with every commercial shipment and generate an e-way bill where the value crosses the threshold, because a consignment stopped for paperwork on this corridor does not sit still for hours, it sits still for days.

05 — What you cannot send

A short, real list.

The first card is refused everywhere on the DTDC network. The second is what actually gets pulled off Bengaluru → Gangtok bookings, which is a different list from the one we see on plains lanes:

Banned outright

  • Alcohol, wine, spirits and beer
  • Compressed gas and camping fuel cartridges
  • Flammable liquids and lighter refills
  • Aerosols and pressurised sprays
  • Perishables and anything needing a cold chain
  • Cash, bullion and unset gemstones

Common Bengaluru → Gangtok misjudgements

  • Alcohol in either direction — the single most-asked question on this route, and the answer is no. Sikkim's liquor pricing makes people want to move bottles both ways, and no parcel service anywhere in India will carry them. It is not a state-specific rule and there is no version of the booking that works; leave it out of the box entirely.
  • Fermented and wet regional food — homemade churpi in brine, kinema, wet gundruk paste, pickle standing in oil, curd-based sweets. On a five-to-six day surface run these will not arrive in a state anyone wants. Hard dried churpi in a sealed factory pack is a different item and normally travels fine; ask us before you assume either way.
  • Fresh produce, plants and cuttings — orchid and flower cuttings, saplings, fresh cardamom and ginger, seasonal fruit. All perishable, all refused. The dried and sealed versions of most of them move without any issue at all, which is why the organic trade ships as much as it does.
  • Camping gas canisters and used liquid-fuel stoves — trekking gear bought in Bengaluru for a North Sikkim trip, and the most common refusal in that category. A sealed cartridge is compressed gas. A stove that has already been run holds fuel residue in the line and is treated the same way. Send the stove flushed and dry, or send it new in its retail box, and buy fuel at the other end.
  • Loose power banks, spare cells and drone batteries — a battery fitted inside its device is accepted on surface; a bare cell, a separate power bank or a drone with the pack installed is not, and nothing above 100 Wh goes on the air leg. Declare electronics at booking so the consignment is routed correctly rather than discovered at a screening point.
06 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.

You get the AWB on WhatsApp as soon as the consignment is booked, the run stays visible on dtdc.in, and the delivery proof returns on the same thread. Two things about the far end are worth knowing before you book. First, the road: NH10 up the Teesta valley is effectively the only artery into Sikkim, it is cut into slopes that move in heavy rain, and when it closes to a landslide between June and September there is no quick alternative — freight simply waits at the bottom until it reopens. That is the geography of the corridor rather than a courier failing, and we would rather say so at booking than afterwards. Second, the town: MG Marg, Gangtok's main street, is pedestrianised, so a delivery to a shop or hotel there finishes on foot from the nearest point a vehicle can stop, and much of the rest of the town is stacked in tiers up a ridge with addresses that read by locality and building rather than by street number. Put a mobile number on the AWB for someone actually in Gangtok. The rider's normal move is to call from below and be directed up.

07 — Three questions about this lane

Specific to Bangalore → Gangtok.

Do I need a permit to send a parcel into Sikkim?

No. Sikkim's permit regime applies to people, not to parcels — foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit to enter the state, and certain high-altitude and border areas in the north require protected-area permission for visitors regardless of nationality. None of that touches an ordinary domestic consignment, which moves on the same paperwork as any other interstate shipment: your details, the recipient's details and a mobile number, plus a tax invoice and an e-way bill if it is commercial and above the value threshold. The one place permits do become your problem is if you are the traveller as well as the sender — if you are shipping your own gear ahead of a trip into North Sikkim, send it to your hotel in Gangtok or to wherever you will actually be staying first, not to a destination you have not yet been cleared to enter.

What happens to my parcel if NH10 is blocked by a landslide?

It waits, safely, at the last point before the closure — normally the Siliguri end — and moves as soon as the road reopens. There is no practical bypass into the state, so nobody moving freight up that valley can offer one, and any transit promise made during an active closure is not worth having. What we do is tell you: if the road is down when you call, you will hear it before you book, and if it goes down while your consignment is running we will say so on your WhatsApp thread rather than leaving you refreshing a tracker. What genuinely helps is timing. Between June and September, ship a clear week earlier than you need to, use express so the parcel is at the foot of the hills in three days rather than six, and if the item is truly date-critical ask us about holding it at Siliguri for a local collection instead of waiting on the highway.

Can you deliver beyond Gangtok — Namchi, Pelling, Ravangla, Lachung, Lachen?

Yes, and you should address the consignment to the final destination rather than routing it through a friend in Gangtok. What changes is the timing, because each of those is a separate hill beat off its own run and not simply a longer drive. Namchi, Ravangla and the South Sikkim towns are generally the quickest additions. Pelling and the west take longer. Lachung, Lachen and the North Sikkim valleys are the slowest and the most weather-dependent, and in winter or during heavy rain they can be genuinely intermittent. Give us the exact pin code and the village or locality name with your enquiry and we will quote a realistic band rather than repeat Gangtok's. If you are sending something a traveller needs on a fixed date in North Sikkim, the honest advice is to send it to Gangtok early and carry it up yourself.
