Free at 5 kg+, collected at whatever hour works, because the HSR Layout desk is staffed through the night. In the weeks before the February and July university intakes this is the busiest international lane out of the city, and a night pickup is often the only slot a working parent has. We arrive with tape, bubble wrap, a spare carton if you need one, and the international airway bill.
Pack for biosecurity.
This step is different here. We go through the carton with you and take out what Australia will not accept — food, seeds, anything wooden, anything that has been outdoors and might carry soil — and we also check the packaging, because straw, husk and dried plant filler are inspected exactly like contents. Then the declaration, item by item.
BLR gateway.
Booked into DTDC International at the Bengaluru facility and flown out of Kempegowda on the Southeast Asia routing. Bengaluru's status as a full international gateway saves the day or two an inland origin loses moving the parcel overland to Mumbai or Delhi. After that, the air leg and the border are the same for everyone.
Australian border.
Clearance at the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth gateway. Two agencies, two different jobs: the Australian Border Force handles customs and duty, and DAFF handles biosecurity. DAFF X-rays inbound parcels and opens a high proportion of them. A clean parcel typically clears in 24–72 hours; a parcel with organic material in it does not clear at all in that condition.
Doorstep delivery.
Last mile via Australia Post or the local courier partner. Put a unit number and a mobile on the address — Australian carriers leave a card and divert to a parcel locker or post office when nobody answers. The POD reaches you the same day it is signed.
Starting rates. Volume decides the bill more often than the scale.
The bill is worked out on actual or volumetric weight — whichever is the larger figure — with the current international fuel surcharge added and GST after that. Student cartons are almost always billed on volume rather than on the scale.

A 5 kg first-semester carton — bedding, clothes, a stainless steel kitchen set and textbooks, about 45 × 35 × 30 cm:

Indicative only. That gap between 5 kg actual and 9.45 kg volumetric is the single biggest cost on this lane — vacuum-bag the bedding, drop a box size, and the same contents can bill a third less. Ask us before you pack.
What you’ll need at pickup.
Australia asks for ordinary customs paperwork and then applies an extraordinary biosecurity standard on top of it. The documents are easy. The discipline about what is in the box is the part that matters.
KYC of the sender
A single photo ID belonging to the person named on the AWB: Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. The ID is photographed at pickup and goes no further than DTDC's own record.
An honest, itemised declaration
Every item listed with a quantity and a value. Understating the declaration to slip something past biosecurity is the worst possible strategy here: an incorrect declaration is an offence in its own right in Australia, and the penalty lands on the consignee. If you are unsure whether something is allowed, tell us and we will find out — that is a five-minute conversation, not a seized parcel.
Value, duty and prescriptions
Consignments valued above roughly AUD 1,000 need a full import declaration at the Australian end and the recipient pays duty and GST before release; below that the low-value path applies, though GST can still be collected. For medicines: sealed strips, the prescription with the doctor's registration number, a personal quantity only, no injectables and no liquids.
The strictest biosecurity regime in the world.
Australia is a continent that has kept out pests and diseases which are endemic almost everywhere else, and it defends that position at the border harder than any country we ship to. These are Australian Border Force and DAFF rules, not our caution. Non-compliant items are removed and destroyed, and the consignee can be billed for the disposal.
Don’t even try
- Meat of any kind — dried, sealed, vacuum-packed, it makes no difference. Australia's foot-and-mouth and African swine fever precautions make this an absolute.
- Dairy and milk-solid sweets — ghee, paneer, khoya, Mysore pak, dharwad pedha. The sweets are what Bengaluru families try, and they are what gets destroyed.
- Eggs and egg products — including egg-based sweets and dried egg powder in mixes.
- Seeds, whole spices with viable seed, dried leaves and herbs — curry leaves, tulsi, methi seed, mustard seed. Living plant material is the whole point of the regime.
- Anything carrying soil — used sports shoes, cricket kit, trekking boots, garden tools. If it has been outdoors in India, assume it is inspected and probably rejected.
- Untreated wood, bamboo, cane and bark — carved boxes, picture frames, agarbatti sticks, wooden-handled utensils. Timber pests are the second half of the biosecurity case.
- Honey, beeswax and bee products — including cosmetics and ayurvedic preparations containing them.
- Fresh produce, flowers, dried floral decorations — festival decoration sets with petals or pressed flowers are blocked.
- Aerosols, all liquids, lithium cells above 100 Wh — universal courier rules.
Allowed with care
- Silk sarees and textiles — Kanjeevaram, Mysore silk, cottons, new clothing. The best thing to build an Australia parcel around. Declare fabric, piece count and a fair value.
- Stainless steel kitchen kit — cookers, tumblers, dabbas, dosa tawas. New, clean and dry, with no wooden handles and no residue of previous use.
- Books, documents and printed material — no restriction at all; list titles and a value.
- Prescription tablets — a personal quantity in sealed strips, prescription attached with the doctor's registration number. Ayurvedic and herbal preparations must be declared in full: several contain botanicals or animal derivatives that Australia restricts.
- Sandalwood soap — manufactured toiletries clear. Sandalwood powder is raw plant material and should not go to Australia even though it travels fine to other countries.
- Non-precious jewellery and small electronics — list the make, the model and what it cost. Precious metal does not ship.
Students, skilled migrants, and cartons packed twice.
Bengaluru's connection to Australia is made of two things: an enormous student pipeline and a decade of skilled migration out of the IT industry. Both generate parcels, and both generate the same conversation about what can actually go in them.
Parents shipping to students
February and July, without fail. Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide — Monash, RMIT, Deakin, UNSW, UTS, Curtin, and the vocational colleges alongside them. Bedding, winter clothing, textbooks, a steel kitchen set. Address it to the residence with the room or unit number and the student's Australian mobile; a campus mail point will not release a parcel it cannot phone in.
Skilled-migrant relocations
Software and engineering families moving on skilled and employer-sponsored visas, shipping the rest of the house after they land. Clothing, books, kitchen steel, documents. Send the parcel after the address is confirmed rather than to a temporary rental; Australian carriers are unforgiving about a name that does not match the mailbox.
Silk sarees and wedding wear
Kanjeevaram and Mysore silk for weddings and community functions in Melbourne's south-east and Sydney's north-west. Textiles are the safest category on this lane by a distance. Book express, three weeks ahead of the date — a DAFF inspection is a normal event, not a disaster, but it costs days.
Kannada and Telugu community events
Ugadi, Rajyotsava and Sankranti programmes across the Australian cities generate their own parcel season — costumes, printed programmes, books, brass items, event material. All of it fine, provided nothing wooden and nothing edible goes in the same box.
Credential and assessment paperwork
Skills-assessment files for the IT and engineering professional bodies, transcripts, apostilled degrees, notarised employment letters. Always express, always tracked. Tell us the submission deadline and we will route for it and watch the clearance.
Startup samples to Australian buyers
Hardware and D2C product samples from Koramangala, HSR and Indiranagar going to Australian distributors and retail buyers. Commercial invoice with HS codes — and check the packing materials as carefully as the product, because straw, husk or untreated wood packaging will fail the parcel at the border even if the product itself is compliant.

Can I send my daughter in Melbourne some filter coffee, podi and homemade chakli?
This is the hardest conversation we have on this lane, and the honest answer is: send none of it. Australia does allow certain commercially manufactured, shelf-stable foods under conditions — but the decision is made by an inspector at the border with your carton open in front of them, not by you at the packing stage, and anything homemade, unlabelled or ambiguous is destroyed. Homemade chakli fails on that alone. Meanwhile Melbourne, Sydney and Perth all have Indian grocery stores that stock filter coffee powder, MTR podis and every namkeen you were planning to send. The pragmatic split we recommend: ship the things she cannot buy there — her books, the steel kitchen set, silk, winter clothes — and transfer her the money for the groceries.
The parcel arrived opened, with a notice inside and one item missing. What happened?
That is a biosecurity inspection, and it is a normal outcome rather than theft. DAFF opens a large share of inbound parcels, removes anything that does not comply, leaves a notice explaining what was taken, reseals the carton and lets the rest continue to the address. The item is not returned and is not recoverable — it is destroyed. There can also be a fee for the disposal. Nothing about the rest of the parcel is affected. If you tell us what was removed we can tell you whether it was a judgement call or a clear-cut prohibition, which usually decides whether it is worth trying a different form of the same thing next time.
What should actually go in a first-semester carton to Australia?
Work backwards from two rules: nothing that grew, and nothing that has been outdoors. What is left is genuinely useful. Bedding and a quilt — vacuum-bagged, because this is where the volumetric charge is won or lost. Winter clothing, since Melbourne in July is colder than students expect. New stainless steel cookware, no wooden handles. Textbooks and reference material. Ethnic wear for the first Diwali function. A power adaptor set for Australian sockets. What to leave out: every food item, the wooden photo frame, the cricket bat and the shoes he has already played in, the packet of seeds someone suggested for a windowsill, and the agarbatti.
