Several of those addresses are shops and homes on lanes a car cannot turn in, so we send a two-wheeler and carry the carton out to the vehicle. The cloth bought in Bengaluru for a family’s ziyarat and sent ahead rather than carried folded in a suitcase — a chadar with zari or embroidered border, prayer cloth, a shawl for an elder who is travelling separately. It is dry cloth and it ships without a query. Fold it into a flat box with a plastic inner layer so a monsoon leg cannot mark it, and book it to arrive two or three days before the family does.
Sealed dry gifts for hosts and khadim families
Packed dates, dry fruit in sealed boxes, factory-packed sweets, a length of cloth or a shawl for the household that hosts the family every year. All fine as long as they are sealed and dry. The things that are not fine — attar, rose water, anything cooked — are on the list below, and they are exactly what people try to include.
Luggage sent ahead of a group
Ziyarat travel from Bengaluru is usually a group affair with elders in it, and a suitcase that goes by road a week earlier is a suitcase nobody has to lift at an airport. Clothes, bedding, prayer mats, medicines in original packing. Address it to the guest house with the booking name and the arrival date, and let us know that date so we can work the booking backwards from it.

Shivajinagar has a genuine trade in Urdu and Islamic publishing and in prayer goods, and a steady stream of it goes north — printed volumes, commentaries, tasbeeh, topis, janamaz. Books are dense and bill on actual weight; a single carton of them reaches 20 kg faster than most senders expect, so send us the rough count before you pack.

A small, dependable flow that has nothing to do with the Dargah. Bengaluru families with a child at Mayo send term-start trunks, uniform and games kit, replacement shoes, and books during the year. School addresses run through an office rather than a hostel gate, so write the student’s house and form along with the name, and check the school’s own rules on food and electronics before you spend the freight.
Stone samples and templates for Kishangarh
India’s largest marble market sits about 30 kilometres from Ajmer at Kishangarh, and Bengaluru architects, stone contractors and kitchen fabricators deal with it directly. What travels north is the specification rather than the stone: cut templates, edge-profile samples, a small reference tile to match against, and the marked-up drawing. Where Ajmer bookings go wrong
- Attar and rose water — bought in the Shivajinagar and Russell Market shops precisely because it is meant for this journey, and refused every time. Attar is an oil and gulab jal is a liquid; neither travels by courier in any quantity or any packaging. Buy it in Ajmer, where every second shop in Dargah Bazaar sells it.
- Loban, bakhoor and self-lighting charcoal discs — the charcoal tablets in particular are treated as a flammable solid because they are designed to ignite from a spark. Dry incense sticks in a sealed retail pack are usually accepted; the coals are not.
- Cash sent as an offering — people do try to put notes in with a chadar so that a relative can present them. Currency is excluded from every courier network and carries no cover whatsoever if it goes missing. Send money through a bank transfer and let the family draw it there.
- Cooked degh, niyaz food and fresh sweets — a 4–5 day surface run through a dry, hot belt is not a food route. Sealed factory-packed mithai in a tin is a different case and travels normally.
- Scented candles, wax and diffuser oils — the oil is a liquid, the wax is a flammable solid, and between April and June the Aravalli heat would have ruined both anyway.

What decides a first-attempt delivery in Ajmer is whether the address is written the way the city actually navigates. The newer colonies — Vaishali Nagar, Panchsheel, Kotra, the Anasagar ring — work on street and house numbers like anywhere else. The Dargah quarter does not: the guest houses, serais and shops there are known by name and by the landmark they sit beside, not by a numbered address, and several share a name with something else two lanes away. So write the guest house or shop name, the gate or bazaar it stands next to, the name of the person expecting the parcel, and a mobile that somebody answers in the morning. With those four things the rider walks straight to it. Without the landmark and the phone, a technically correct postal address in that quarter is close to undeliverable.
Specific to Bangalore → Ajmer.
We are travelling from Bengaluru for the ziyarat. Can the chadar and our bags go ahead of us?
Yes, and for a group with elders in it that is much the easier way to travel. Cloth, bedding, sealed dry gifts and clothing are all straightforward on this lane. Book on surface about a week to ten days before your arrival date, or on express if you are inside four days, and address the consignment to the guest house or serai in the name the booking is held in, with the arrival date written on the label and a local contact number. Tell us the arrival date at the time of booking and we will time the collection to it rather than sending it as early as possible — a parcel that reaches a small guest house a week before the guest is a parcel somebody has to find space for and remember. Two things to leave out of the box: attar or rose water, which cannot be couriered at all, and cash, which carries no cover. Both are easier to arrange in Ajmer anyway.
The address I have is a guest house near the Dargah with no house number. Will it deliver?
It will, provided you give the rider what the postal line cannot. In that quarter the working address is a name plus a landmark: the guest house or serai as it is known locally, the gate or bazaar it stands beside — Nizam Gate, Delhi Gate, Nala Bazaar, Dargah Bazaar — the name of the person who will take it, and a phone that is answered. Add the pin code, because that is what routes the consignment through sortation, but understand that inside the lanes the pin does nothing for the rider. Deliveries there happen in the morning, before the quarter fills up, and they happen on foot or on a two-wheeler because nothing else fits. During the Urs week the crowd and the traffic restrictions around the Dargah slow everything in that area, so if your dates fall near it, book to land several days clear on either side. We will tell you honestly when you call whether the week you have chosen is a sensible one.
Do you deliver in Pushkar, and does the Kartik Purnima fair change anything?
Pushkar is about 14 kilometres from Ajmer over the Nag Pahar road and is served on the same booking — tell us it is Pushkar rather than Ajmer city so the last-mile is planned for it, and give us the hotel, dharamshala or campsite name with a contact number. For most of the year it is an unremarkable delivery. Around Kartik Purnima it is not: the fair fills the town for a week or more, the ghat side and the main bazaar close to vehicles, temporary camps go up on the fairground with no fixed addresses at all, and every hotel is running at capacity with staff who have twenty other things to do than hold a courier. If you are sending something for that week — stall material, a tour group’s supplies, luggage ahead of a family — book it to arrive three or four clear days before the crowd, address it to a permanent property rather than a camp, and put a mobile on it that will be answered. Anything left to the last two days is at the mercy of the traffic, and we would rather say that upfront than make a promise the town will not keep.
