How an international shipment runs

Five steps from your door to a foreign address.

STEP

Pickup at your door.

A DTDC franchise courier arrives at your address. Free at 5 kg+. Bring your KYC ID for the airway bill.

STEP

Pack & document.

We pack at our office with international-grade materials. Commercial invoice, content declaration, KYC photographed. We tell you upfront what your destination country restricts.

STEP

DTDC International handover.

Same evening into the DTDC International facility. Air movement to the destination country's gateway via Mumbai or Delhi.

STEP

Customs clearance.

Most parcels with clean paperwork clear in 24–72 hours. Some countries (Australia, USA, UAE) screen heavily — we tell you in advance which lanes need extra care.

STEP

Doorstep delivery.

Last-mile in the destination city by the local DTDC partner courier. Recipient signs; we forward the POD to you on WhatsApp.

Customs & documentation

What you'll need at pickup.

Customs paperwork is the most common reason an international parcel stalls. We walk you through everything before pickup so it doesn't.

KYC of the sender

One photo ID for the person whose name is on the AWB — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. We photograph it at pickup; not stored beyond DTDC's record.

Commercial invoice

For commercial goods, a printed invoice listing items, quantity, value, and HS codes (we help with codes). For gifts, a written declaration suffices but value still must be stated.

Prescription (medicines)

For tablets going to a student or family abroad: a copy of the prescription with the doctor's registration number. No injectables, no controlled substances, no liquid medicines.

Origin certificate

For commercial textile, handicraft and food shipments to certain countries — we tell you when this is needed and help you get it.

Recipient details

Recipient's full address, postcode, phone number with country code, and email. Phone is critical — most foreign couriers SMS / call before the last-mile delivery.

Declared value

State the real value of contents. Under-declaring to dodge duty can get the parcel seized — and it's the recipient who pays the disposal fee, not you.

What people ship internationally

Care packages, textiles, gifts, documents, returns.

Student care packages

Books, sealed dry snacks (with biosecurity caveat), bedsheets, kitchen tools, festival clothing. Common to USA, Canada, UK, Australia.

Wedding outfits & gifts

Sarees, lehengas, sherwanis, dupattas, jewellery boxes (non-precious). Shipped ahead of weddings to Indian-origin families abroad.

Handicraft & textile samples

Block-print fabric, miniatures, papier-mâché, brass (non-precious), leather (where allowed). To buyers, gallery owners, Etsy sellers.

Personal documents

Passports, originals, signed contracts, certified copies. Always express; tracked international document is faster and safer than registered post.

Diwali & festival parcels

Diyas, decorations, pooja items (no agarbatti for biosecurity-strict countries). Recommend express to land before the festival.

Returning-traveller baggage

For visitors who bought too much in India. Picked up from the hotel, packed, shipped before they fly out.

Universal restrictions

What you cannot send internationally.

These are universal — no international air courier accepts them. Country-specific restrictions are listed on each country page.

Banned outright (every country)

  • Liquids of any kind — perfumes, attars, oils, gels, alcohol, hand sanitiser
  • Aerosols and pressurised cans
  • Cosmetics, nail polish, fragrance samples
  • Flammable solids, matches, lighters
  • Currency notes, gold/silver bullion, precious stones
  • Lithium batteries above 100 Wh on the air leg
  • Pornography, illegal drugs, weapons, ammunition

Country-restricted (varies by destination)

  • Food — most countries restrict; Australia and New Zealand seize almost all food
  • Wood / bamboo / untreated organic material — biosecurity flags in AU, NZ, USA, Canada
  • Leather goods — restrictions vary; some countries demand certificates
  • Dairy & meat products — paneer, ghee, khoya-mithai, dehydrated meat, pickle with ghee — restricted in most Western countries
  • Seeds, dried plants, herbs — biosecurity restricted in AU, NZ, USA, Canada
  • Religious / cultural items to Saudi Arabia & UAE — religious-content sensitivities apply
Tracking & proof of delivery

DTDC AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands abroad.

The moment the parcel is booked into DTDC International, we send you the AWB number on WhatsApp. Type it into the public tracker at dtdc.in any time — the same number tracks across DTDC's domestic handoff and the international leg through to last-mile delivery.

Frequently asked

International shipping FAQ.

Do I need to fill a customs declaration form?

You don't — DTDC fills the airway bill and the commercial invoice from the details you give us. What you provide is a clear list of contents, item-level values, and the recipient's phone number for the foreign courier's last-mile contact attempt. Under-declaring to dodge duty is a bad idea: it's the consignee who pays the seized-parcel disposal fee.

Will my parcel be charged import duty in the destination country?

Depends on country and value. USA: most personal-use shipments under USD 800 clear duty-free under de minimis. UK: gifts under £39 are duty-free; commercial items pay duty + VAT. UAE: AED 300 threshold. Australia: AUD 1,000 threshold. We'll tell you the threshold for your destination before booking. Duty is paid by the recipient before the last-mile leaves the gateway.

How long does international delivery take?

Express: 5–8 days to USA / UK / EU; 6–10 days to Canada / Australia; 3–5 days to UAE / Gulf; 4–6 days to SE Asia. Economy: add 4–8 days. Customs delays are the main variable — clean paperwork clears in 24–72 hours, messy paperwork can hold a parcel for 1–2 weeks.

Can I send Indian sweets / namkeen / spices?

Spices: usually fine, declare the contents. Sealed factory-packed dry snacks: often allowed but check the destination — Australia and New Zealand seize almost all food. Loose / homemade sweets: avoid; they'll be seized. Anything with dairy (khoya, ghee): banned in most Western countries.

Can I send my prescription tablets to a family member abroad?

Yes, with three conditions: (1) a copy of the prescription with the doctor's registration number, (2) sealed strips only — no liquid medicines or injectables, (3) only the quantity prescribed. We've had reliable clearance on this format. Controlled substances are never accepted.

What if my parcel gets stuck at customs?

We track every shipment and contact you the moment we see a hold. Most holds resolve within 48 hours — usually a missing detail on the invoice that we help the foreign customs broker fix. We don't charge for follow-ups. Worst case, the parcel returns to India and we waive the redelivery fee.
