What you’ll need at pickup.
Spanish customs (Agencia Tributaria) clears EU TARIC paperwork efficiently. Get the NIE/DNI/NIF right at pickup and the parcel moves through Madrid or Barcelona without issues.
KYC of the sender
One photo ID for the person whose name is on the AWB — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. We photograph it at pickup; not stored beyond DTDC’s record.
Commercial invoice
For commercial goods, a printed invoice with item, HS code, quantity and value. Recipient NIF for B2B; personal recipient needs NIE (foreigner identity) or DNI (Spanish national ID). For gifts, a written declaration with stated value.
Prescription (medicines)
Sealed tablets only, with a copy of the doctor’s prescription and registration number. AEMPS rules apply — no controlled substances, no liquid medicines, no injectables.
What Spain doesn’t let in.
These are real Agencia Tributaria and EU TARIC rules — not our caution. Items shipped against them are seized, and the consignee usually pays a disposal fee.
Don’t even try
- Weapons and weapon-replicas — Spain has historic-weapon protection laws; even decorative swords, kirpans and ornamental knives get flagged.
- Drug paraphernalia — pipes, scales, grow-kits and similar are blocked.
- Counterfeit goods — luxury and branded counterfeits are seized and destroyed.
- Bullfighting-related items — controversial; some autonomous communities (Catalonia, Canary Islands) have specific bans on related materials.
- Materials related to ETA/Basque-conflict heritage — sensitive flag; rare but real.
- Ivory and CITES-listed products — strictly enforced.
- Aerosols, perfumes, lithium >100 Wh — universal courier restriction.
Allowed with care
- Textiles and sarees — block-print, silk, lehengas. Spanish customs handles non-counterfeit textiles cleanly.
- Books and printed material — any topic; Spanish-translated Indian materials are particularly welcome.
- Sealed dry sweets — declare allergens line by line.
- Prescription tablets — sealed strip, doctor’s prescription, EU Rx-equivalent.
- Non-precious jewellery — declare make and value clearly.
- Small electronics, papier-mâché — declare model and value.

How does Spain customs compare to France or Italy from Kota?
Spain sits in the middle. Faster than Italy on average, slightly slower than France, and meaningfully slower than Germany. Madrid and Barcelona ports clear clean parcels in 24–72 hours; verification rounds occasionally add a day. We quote 7–9 working days express from Kota to be honest about the band — best-case is 6, but week 2 of shipping is realistic if Aduanas wants to verify a value declaration. With a clean invoice and NIE/NIF, parcels rarely actually fail clearance.
My JEE-alumnus child is at IE Business School Madrid — care kit routine?
Standard lane. Pickup from your Kota address (Talwandi, Rajeev Gandhi Nagar, Vigyan Nagar — wherever), Jaipur feeder same evening, into Mumbai or Delhi DTDC International. Madrid-Barajas (MAD) gateway around Day 4 of the air leg, Aduanas clearance Day 5–6, last-mile to the Madrid address Day 7–9. Pack books, sealed dry snacks, kitchen tools, festival clothing — declare allergens line-by-line on the invoice. NIE of the recipient on the AWB helps clearance.
Spanish-tourist returning-baggage — what’s the routine from Kota?
Spanish travellers come to Rajasthan in big numbers — Kota, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaipur — and routinely buy more than their flight allowance. Block-print quilts, brass items, papier-mâché, jewellery. Routine is: pickup from the hotel, pack on our table with a clear list, and ship before they fly. The receiver address is their Spanish home, and we use their NIE or DNI on the commercial invoice. Spanish customs treats it as ‘personal effects’ which is a friendlier classification — duties usually under €30 on a 5–10kg parcel.
