02 — How this lane runs

Five steps from your Bharatpur door to a New Zealand address.

STEP

Pickup, Bharatpur.

Free at 5 kg+. We bring tape, bubble wrap and the international airway bill — to your home, shop, or hotel near Keoladeo.

STEP

Pack & document.

Commercial invoice, KYC, content declaration. NZ MPI is the strictest biosecurity worldwide — we triple-check Keoladeo tourist baggage for any organic material.

STEP

Delhi feeder & DTDC handover.

Bharatpur has no airport but Delhi is close — ~180 km. The parcel road-feeds to Delhi the same evening, then into the DTDC International facility. Air movement transits Australia or Southeast Asia to AKL Auckland or WLG Wellington — direct flights are limited.

STEP

NZ customs (MPI).

Clearance at Auckland gateway. New Zealand’s MPI biosecurity is among the strictest worldwide — even tighter than Australia in some categories. Paperwork-clean, biosecurity-safe parcels still take 48–96 hours to clear on average.

STEP

Doorstep delivery.

Last-mile via NZ Post or the local courier partner. POD on WhatsApp the same day.

03 — Rate band, Bharatpur → New Zealand

Starting rates. Real pricing depends on weight.

Final price depends on actual or volumetric weight (whichever is greater) plus the international fuel surcharge in force on your booking date. GST is extra. Rates run higher than Australia because routing is longer.

Starting per-kg rates

  • Express (8–12 days, door)from ₹1,700 / kg
  • Economy (12–18 days, door)from ₹1,300 / kg
  • Min billable weight0.5 kg
  • Pickup from BharatpurFree at 5 kg+

Volumetric formula: (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000.

Worked example

A 2 kg parcel — say a stack of birding books plus folded cotton clothing, ~30 × 25 × 15 cm:

  • Express, 2 kg × ₹1,700≈ ₹3,400
  • + fuel surcharge (~25%)≈ ₹850
  • + GST 18%≈ ₹765
  • Approx total, express≈ ₹5,650

Indicative only. Fuel surcharge and rate cards change.

04 — Customs & documentation

What you’ll need at pickup.

MPI biosecurity is the strictest customs operation we deal with. We’ll walk you through documentation before pickup so the parcel doesn’t get held — or worse, destroyed.

KYC of the sender

One photo ID for the person whose name is on the AWB — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. We photograph it at pickup; not stored beyond DTDC’s record.

Commercial invoice

For commercial goods, a printed invoice listing items, quantity and value. For gifts, a written declaration. Item-level descriptions matter — MPI reads them carefully.

Prescription (medicines)

Pharmac rules — only the quantity prescribed, in the original sealed strip, with a copy of the prescription and doctor’s registration. No controlled substances, no liquids, no injectables.

05 — New Zealand-specific restrictions

What New Zealand doesn’t let in.

MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries) is among the strictest biosecurity regimes worldwide — small island ecosystem, fewer pest defences than continental countries. For Bharatpur senders shipping Keoladeo birding souvenirs, the rule is firm: no feathers, no pressed plants, no organic material. Items shipped against MPI rules are seized, destroyed, and the consignee pays a disposal fee.

Don’t even try

  • Bird feathers, peacock feathers, dried plants, pressed flowers — the most common Keoladeo-souvenir mistake. Even a shed feather is biosecurity-flagged. MPI is even stricter than Australia.
  • All food — even commercially sealed packs. MPI’s default position is to seize.
  • Wooden items, untreated — picture frames, carved boxes, decor.
  • Bamboo handicrafts — treated as plant material.
  • Leather goods — CITES plus biosecurity rules.
  • Seeds, dried plants, herbs, agarbatti — agarbatti sticks are treated as plant-derived material and routinely seized.
  • Dairy and meat products — including dried, sealed, processed.
  • Fresh produce, dried flowers, decorations with botanical content — Diwali decoration sets with petals or pressed flowers are blocked.
  • Beeswax, pollen, honey-related items — protect NZ’s native bee stock.
  • Aerosols, lithium batteries above 100 Wh, all liquids — universal courier rules.

Allowed with care

  • Birding photographs, books, hand-painted bird-art on cotton — straightforward; the safe Keoladeo trip-souvenir core.
  • Textiles and cotton clothing — declare fabric type and value. Best parcel content for NZ.
  • Books and printed material — straightforward; declare title and value.
  • Prescription tablets — sealed strip, prescription attached, only the quantity prescribed (Pharmac rules).
  • Non-precious jewellery and small electronics — declare make, model, value.
  • Personal documents — passports, originals, signed papers.
06 — What goes Bharatpur → New Zealand

Keoladeo birding returns, Sikh-Punjabi family parcels, weddings.

Keoladeo bird-tourism returns

NZ birdwatchers visit Keoladeo (UNESCO World Heritage Site) — a niche but real demographic. They ship birding-souvenirs / photographs / books / hand-painted bird-art on cotton home. Picked up from the hotel, packed (zero feathers, zero organic material — MPI is the strictest worldwide), shipped before they fly out.

Agricultural Jat-Sikh family parcels

From Bharatpur’s rural Jat community to NZ’s Sikh-Punjabi diaspora in Auckland and Wellington — books, festival clothing, family memorabilia. Always express.

Wedding & festival outfits

Sarees, lehengas, sherwanis, dupattas, non-precious jewellery boxes. Shipped ahead of weddings to NZ-Indian families in Auckland and Wellington.

Returning-traveller baggage

For NZ tourists who came for Keoladeo birding plus Lohagarh Fort. Picked up from the hotel, packed (zero organic material — MPI scrutinises tourist baggage closely), shipped before they fly out.

Personal documents

Passport originals, transcripts, signed contracts, certified copies. Always express; lane runs longer so book early.

Mathura-Vrindavan-pilgrim souvenirs

Brass deity items, devotional books, prayer-shawl textiles from the broader Bharatpur-Mathura-Vrindavan pilgrim circuit.

07 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.

The moment the parcel is booked into DTDC International, we send you the AWB number on WhatsApp. Type it into the public tracker at dtdc.in any time. When delivery happens we forward the POD — signed slip or photo — within the hour.

08 — Three questions about New Zealand shipments

Asked most often.

I’m a NZ birder visiting Keoladeo — what can I ship home?

Photographs, prints, hand-painted bird-art on cotton, India-bird-guide books, block-print scarves and brass figurines all clear cleanly through MPI. What absolutely doesn’t: any feathers (even shed ones — MPI is even stricter than Australia’s DAFF on biosecurity), any pressed plants or dried flowers, any wooden picture frames (untreated wood is seized), any food sample, any beeswax-based item. We pack tourist baggage at our office, triple-check for organic material, and route through Delhi the same evening. The parcel lands in your NZ home in 8–12 working days.

Why is MPI even stricter than Australia?

New Zealand is a smaller, more isolated island ecosystem with fewer natural pest defences than even Australia. A single moth species or fungal spore arriving via a wooden frame or a packet of dried herbs can do real damage to native flora and pasture. MPI’s response is to default to seizure on anything ambiguous — agarbatti sticks (plant material), beeswax (could carry foulbrood), bamboo decor, dried flowers in a Diwali decoration set. The rule of thumb for NZ shipments: if it grew, was made from something that grew, or was made by an insect — assume it’s blocked.

Honestly — how long does the parcel really take?

8–12 working days for express, 12–18 for economy. Be straight with yourself about this: it’s longer than Australia (7–10 days) because direct flights from India to NZ are limited and routing typically transits Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore or Hong Kong. The MPI clearance step in Auckland adds another 24–96 hours. We don’t advertise faster numbers to win the booking; we’d rather you book a wedding parcel two weeks early and have it land calmly than rush and miss the date.
