MPI biosecurity is the strictest customs operation we deal with. We’ll walk you through documentation before pickup so the parcel doesn’t get held — or worse, destroyed.
KYC of the sender
One photo ID for the person whose name is on the AWB — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. We photograph it at pickup; not stored beyond DTDC’s record.
Commercial invoice
For commercial goods, a printed invoice listing items, quantity and value. For gifts, a written declaration. Item-level descriptions matter — MPI reads them carefully.
Prescription (medicines)
Pharmac rules — only the quantity prescribed, in the original sealed strip, with a copy of the prescription and doctor’s registration. No controlled substances, no liquids, no injectables.
What New Zealand doesn’t let in.
MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries) is among the strictest biosecurity regimes worldwide — small island ecosystem, fewer pest defences than continental countries. I’m a NZ birder visiting Keoladeo — what can I ship home?
Photographs, prints, hand-painted bird-art on cotton, India-bird-guide books, block-print scarves and brass figurines all clear cleanly through MPI. What absolutely doesn’t: any feathers (even shed ones — MPI is even stricter than Australia’s DAFF on biosecurity), any pressed plants or dried flowers, any wooden picture frames (untreated wood is seized), any food sample, any beeswax-based item. We pack tourist baggage at our office, triple-check for organic material, and route through Delhi the same evening. The parcel lands in your NZ home in 8–12 working days.
Why is MPI even stricter than Australia?
New Zealand is a smaller, more isolated island ecosystem with fewer natural pest defences than even Australia. A single moth species or fungal spore arriving via a wooden frame or a packet of dried herbs can do real damage to native flora and pasture. MPI’s response is to default to seizure on anything ambiguous — agarbatti sticks (plant material), beeswax (could carry foulbrood), bamboo decor, dried flowers in a Diwali decoration set. The rule of thumb for NZ shipments: if it grew, was made from something that grew, or was made by an insect — assume it’s blocked.
Honestly — how long does the parcel really take?
8–12 working days for express, 12–18 for economy. Be straight with yourself about this: it’s longer than Australia (7–10 days) because direct flights from India to NZ are limited and routing typically transits Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore or Hong Kong. The MPI clearance step in Auckland adds another 24–96 hours. We don’t advertise faster numbers to win the booking; we’d rather you book a wedding parcel two weeks early and have it land calmly than rush and miss the date.
