Gift or commercial gets decided here, because the two are treated very differently at the British border, and the full UK postcode goes on the label — a British address without its postcode is an address the last-mile network cannot sort.

GB customs clearance.
Arrival and clearance at the London gateway, usually Heathrow. Since Brexit, Great Britain runs its own customs regime rather than the EU one — your parcel is now an import into GB under UK rules, assessed on the value and description you declared. Border Force also enforces the UK ban on meat and dairy from outside the EU, which is where most Bengaluru food parcels come unstuck. Northern Ireland sits under its own arrangements; tell us if the address is a BT postcode.

Last mile via Royal Mail, Parcelforce or the local partner, depending on postcode and service. Any duty or import VAT assessed on arrival is collected from the recipient before or at delivery — that charge is theirs, not something we can prepay from India. What you’ll need at pickup.
Since Brexit the UK assesses Indian parcels under its own rules rather than the EU’s, and the paperwork it wants is not complicated — it just has to be right before the box leaves Bengaluru. We fill it in with you at the door.
KYC of the sender
One photo ID for whoever is named on the airway bill — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence, photographed at the door and held no longer than DTDC’s own record requires. If the sender and the person paying are different people, tell us at booking so the invoice and the AWB agree.
Gift or commercial — pick one honestly
A genuine present between private individuals and a shipment of stock are two different things at the British border, and calling the second one the first is the single most expensive mistake on this lane. Gifts get a written declaration with a truthful value; the UK does grant relief on low-value personal gifts, and we will tell you the current figure at booking rather than quoting one that may have moved. Anything sold, invoiced or sent to a business needs a printed commercial invoice with HS codes, and the UK receiver generally needs a GB EORI number.
Prescription, for medicines
Tablets going to a student or a parent: original sealed strips, a copy of the prescription showing the doctor’s registration number, and one line stating the diagnosis. Send only the quantity prescribed. No liquids, no injectables, and nothing containing codeine or a controlled substance — those are refused at the gateway and are not worth the attempt.
What Great Britain doesn’t let in.
These are UK Border Force, HMRC, Defra and MHRA rules, not house caution. Parcels sent against them are seized or destroyed, sometimes with a charge attached. The list below is ordered by what Bengaluru senders actually get wrong, which is not the same as what a generic prohibited-items page tells you.
Don’t even try
- Milk-based sweets and ghee — Mysore pak, dharwad pedha, kaju katli, obbattu, tins of ghee. Britain bars meat and dairy arriving in personal parcels from outside the EU, and a factory seal makes no difference to that rule. This is the most common seizure on the Bengaluru–UK lane by a distance.
- All meat, dried or vacuum-packed included — the same Defra restriction, applied just as absolutely.
- Instant mixes and masala packets with milk solids — read the ingredient panel before you pack. Plenty of ready-mix and instant-dessert sachets are dairy in the eyes of the rule.
- Fresh produce, curry leaves, seeds and untreated plant material — plant-health controls. Fresh coconut and curry leaves are refused every single time.
- Agarbatti, dhoop and camphor — paste incense and camphor tablets are flammable solids and cannot fly in a courier parcel.
- CBD, hemp and vape liquids — restricted or refused regardless of what is legal to buy in India.
- Counterfeit branded goods — Border Force seizes these routinely, and a seizure attaches to the sender as well as the parcel.
- Aerosols, loose lithium cells and power banks, anything above 100 Wh, all liquids — universal air rules. A tech city ships more spare batteries than most, so we say this twice.
Allowed with care
- Filter coffee powder — sealed, commercially packaged, ingredients printed. It travels on this lane every week and clears without argument. The brewed decoction is a liquid and does not.
- Dry podis, chakli, mixture and banana chips — factory-packed with a legible ingredient list, no dairy, no meat, nothing damp. Homemade in a steel dabba is what gets opened.
- Silk sarees, lehengas and stitched clothing — Kanjeevaram, Mysore silk, Ilkal, cottons. Declare a fair value; under-declaring an outfit is what turns a routine parcel into a held one.
- Sandalwood soap, powder and incense-free toiletries — fine as manufactured goods. Sandalwood oil is a liquid and is not.
- Documents, transcripts and books — straightforward. Declare the title and a nominal value; do not write “no value”, which reads as an evasion.
- Small electronics and non-precious jewellery — declare make, model and value. Gold and precious metal do not ship on this network at all.
Students, settled families, and a real B2B flow.
After the United States, Britain takes more from Bengaluru than any destination we serve, and the mix is distinctive: a long-settled Kannadiga and South Indian community, a very large student intake, and a genuine commercial stream out of the city’s product and D2C companies.
Parents shipping to UK universities
September and January, without fail. Bedding, cookware, sealed dry food, winter layers and festival clothing going to Manchester, Warwick, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and the London colleges. Give us the hall-of-residence name, the room or flat number and the full postcode — UK student accommodation is run by a reception desk that will not sign for a parcel it cannot match to a resident.

Bengaluru’s links here are two generations deep, and the Kannada associations in London and the Midlands keep the festival traffic dense around Ugadi, Ganesha Chaturthi and Deepavali. The most-asked question on this lane and, happily, mostly a yes. Sealed filter coffee powder, dry podis, chakli, mixture and factory-packed savouries all clear. Anything built on milk, ghee or moisture does not — see the restriction list, and read it before you shop, not after.
Wedding and festival outfits
Silk sarees for a wedding in Birmingham, sherwanis for a reception in Leicester, blouse pieces sent to Bengaluru for stitching and returned finished. Send these three weeks ahead of the date, express, with a fair declared value. An outfit sitting in a clearance queue while the wedding happens is the worst outcome this lane produces.

What actually changed for parcels to Britain after Brexit?
For an Indian sender, less than people fear, but it is worth understanding. Great Britain now operates its own customs regime rather than the EU’s, so your parcel is an import into the UK assessed under UK rules — its own tariff schedule, its own value thresholds, its own handling of import VAT, and none of it borrowed from Brussels any more. In practice that means the declaration and invoice you send have to stand on their own: a clear description, an honest value, HS codes on anything commercial, and a GB EORI number for the UK business receiving it. The other consequence is that the gift-versus-commercial distinction now carries real weight, because the reliefs attached to genuine personal gifts are set by the UK itself. Northern Ireland is the exception worth flagging — it sits under separate arrangements, so if the postcode starts with BT, say so at booking and we will document it accordingly.
Can I send Mysore pak and filter coffee to my daughter in Manchester?
The coffee travels, the Mysore pak does not, and this is the conversation we have most often on the Bengaluru–UK lane. Britain does not allow meat or dairy products to arrive in personal parcels from outside the EU, and Mysore pak, pedha, kaju katli and anything else built on milk or ghee falls squarely inside that. A commercial seal does not create an exemption. Sealed filter coffee powder, on the other hand, is a dry packaged good and clears without fuss, as do dry podis, chakli, mixture and factory-packed banana chips with the ingredients printed on the pack. If you want something sweet that survives the trip, jaggery-based dry items and boiled sweets with a full ingredient panel are the safer pick — and every year we suggest sending the outfit and the coffee rather than the sweets box, which arrives.
Who pays UK customs charges, and can I settle them from Bengaluru?
The recipient pays, and no, they cannot be prepaid from this end on this service. If HMRC assesses duty or import VAT on arrival, the carrier or Royal Mail collects it from the person receiving the parcel — usually through an online payment link or a card slip before delivery, sometimes at the door. That is worth mentioning to your family before you ship, because an unexpected charge on a gift is an awkward surprise. What you can control is the declaration: an honest, specific description with a fair value is far more likely to be waved through, and under-declaring to dodge a charge tends to produce an inspection, a delay and a larger bill than the one you were avoiding.
