Common Bengaluru → Thrissur misjudgements
- Gold and gold jewellery — the single most-asked question on this lane, and the answer is a flat no. Thrissur is India’s gold-jewellery centre and the assumption that a courier can carry a small ornament to a wedding is extremely common here. Precious metal in any form and any quantity is excluded from carriage, and no amount of declared value changes that. Carry it yourself, or use a bank or an insured valuables service that is built for it — a parcel network is not.
- Fireworks and crackers — Thrissur Pooram is famous for its fireworks and the temptation to send something up for a function is real. Explosives and pyrotechnics are prohibited outright on surface and air alike, with no small-quantity exemption, and attempting it can void the whole consignment.
- Coconut oil, ghee and Ayurvedic thailams — heavy traffic on every Kerala lane and consistently refused. Sealed factory bottles are still liquid, and oil seepage on a two-to-three-day surface leg ruins every parcel it touches.
- Wet chutney, pickle in oil and fresh curry leaves — dry podi, rasam powder and sealed masala all travel freely. Wet and fresh do not survive the leg and are refused at booking.
- Loose lithium cells and power banks — a battery installed inside a laptop or a phone is accepted on surface; spare cells, loose power banks and anything above 100 Wh on the air leg are refused. Tell us at booking if electronics are going.

The Thrissur-specific note is about the city centre: the core is built around Swaraj Round, a ring road circling the temple hill, and during Pooram and other major temple festivals large parts of it are closed to vehicles or heavily restricted for crowd movement. A delivery attempt inside that ring on a festival day will simply not happen. Can I courier gold jewellery from Bangalore to Thrissur?
No. Gold, silver, bullion, coins and finished jewellery are excluded from carriage on DTDC and on every parcel network in the country, and declaring the value or paying for cover does not create an exception. We get asked this more on the Thrissur lane than on any other, because the city is the centre of India’s gold-jewellery trade and a lot of family shopping for weddings happens in Bengaluru. The practical alternatives are to carry it in person, to buy at the Thrissur end where the market is, or to use a bank locker transfer or a licensed insured-valuables service designed for precious metal. What we will happily carry is everything around the jewellery — the sarees, the gift boxes, the wedding stationery, the return gifts.
Does “Thrissur” include Guruvayur, Chalakudy, Irinjalakuda and Kunnamkulam?
All of them are served, but not all on the same day. Thrissur city and the 680xxx core — Swaraj Round, Poothole, Ayyanthole, Punkunnam, Ollur — deliver next-day off the Thrissur hub. Guruvayur, Chalakudy, Irinjalakuda, Kunnamkulam and Wadakkanchery sit on their own delivery runs and normally add a working day. Guruvayur is worth flagging separately: it is a temple town with heavy pilgrim traffic and constrained access around the temple precinct, so give us a landmark and a mobile number rather than a bare address. Always send the exact pin code at booking and we will quote the right transit instead of a district-wide guess.
Will Thrissur Pooram or a temple festival affect my delivery?
It can, and it is worth planning for rather than discovering. Pooram falls in the Malayalam month of Medam, generally late April or early May, and it draws crowds into the very centre of the city — the Swaraj Round area and the roads feeding it are closed or restricted for vehicles across the festival period, and again for the fireworks. A rider cannot complete an attempt into a closed zone, so a parcel addressed to the city core on those days rolls to the next working day. The same applies on a smaller scale for other major temple festivals through the season. If your delivery matters on a specific date and it falls anywhere near Pooram, book express, book early, and give us the recipient’s mobile so the attempt can be timed around the closures.
