02 — How this lane runs

Five steps from your Bengaluru door to a Saudi address.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

Free at 5 kg+, day or night. We run this lane heavily out of Shivajinagar, Frazer Town, Tannery Road, RT Nagar and the Bannerghatta Road belt, and just as often from the tech corridors. Packing material and the airway bill come with the agent.

STEP

Pack & document.

This is the step that decides the outcome on a Saudi parcel. Every item written out by name, a stated value that matches reality, the consignee's Iqama number and Saudi mobile on the booking, and a look through the box for anything on the restricted list before it is taped shut.

STEP

BLR gateway.

Into the DTDC International facility and out through Kempegowda towards Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam. Because Bengaluru is a full international gateway the parcel does not lose a day or two moving overland to a coastal hub first, which is the hidden cost of shipping from an inland city.

STEP

Saudi customs.

Clearance at the arrival gateway, and it is deliberate. Saudi Customs inspects more thoroughly than its neighbours and applies SFDA rules to anything medicinal or edible. A clean parcel typically takes 48–72 hours; one with a vague declaration takes as long as the queries take.

STEP

Doorstep delivery.

Last mile to Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Khobar, Yanbu, Jubail and the residential compounds. The signed POD comes to you on WhatsApp the day it happens.

03 — Rate band, Bangalore → Saudi Arabia

Starting rates. The final number follows the billed weight.

Fifty rupees a kilo above the UAE lane, and the difference is clearance handling rather than distance. It is still among the cheapest international routes out of Bengaluru. Final price depends on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater, plus the fuel surcharge in force on the day you book. GST is extra.

Starting per-kg rates

  • Express (4–6 days, door)from ₹700 / kg
  • Economy (6–10 days, door)from ₹500 / kg
  • Min billable weight0.5 kg
  • Pickup from BengaluruFree at 5 kg+

Volumetric formula: (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000.

Worked example

A 3 kg parcel — a family carton for Riyadh with clothing, sealed dry snacks and a set of school records, around 40 × 30 × 20 cm:

  • Express, 3 kg × ₹700≈ ₹2,100
  • + fuel surcharge (~25%)≈ ₹525
  • + GST 18%≈ ₹472
  • Approx total, express≈ ₹3,097

Indicative figures. Rate cards and the fuel surcharge are both revised periodically. Note the volumetric check: that carton measures 40×30×20, which bills as 4.8 kg, not 3.

04 — Customs & documentation

The paperwork that decides this shipment.

More parcels are held at Saudi customs than at any other destination we ship to, and almost none of it is bad luck. It is a value that looked convenient, a line that said "gifts", or a medicine with no paper behind it. We fix all three before the box leaves your address.

KYC of the sender

A photo ID matching the name on the airway bill — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence — photographed at pickup and kept only in DTDC's booking record. Businesses give us the GSTIN and the shipper name as registered.

Invoice, and the consignee's Iqama

Commercial consignments need a printed invoice with item descriptions, quantities, HS codes and true values; personal ones need a written declaration with the same honesty. Add the recipient's Iqama or national ID number and a Saudi mobile. When customs has a question it goes to the consignee first, and a parcel nobody can reach simply waits.

Prescription and SFDA rules, for medicines

Tablets to a family member need the original sealed strip, a prescription copy carrying the doctor's registration number, and the patient's name matching the consignee. Personal quantities only. No syrups, no injectables, nothing controlled — and anything containing codeine or a sedative should not be attempted at all.

05 — Saudi-specific restrictions

What Saudi Arabia doesn’t let in.

Saudi Arabia applies the tightest import rules in the Gulf, and enforcement is real rather than nominal. The list below is stated as customs states it. Goods sent against it are seized, and for narcotics the penalties are severe.

Don’t even try

  • Alcohol in any form or concentration — prohibited absolutely. That includes vanilla and other cooking essences, alcohol-based perfume, aftershave, deodorant and sanitiser, and rose or kewra preparations with an alcohol base. There is no personal-use allowance.
  • Pork and every pork-derived ingredient — prohibited, including pork gelatin in sweets, capsules and confectionery.
  • Religious material of non-Islamic faiths — restricted on import. Devotional articles, idols and scripture intended for worship fall inside the restriction. A brass or sandalwood figure sent as homeware should be described for what it is, decorative craft, and nothing more.
  • Narcotics, cannabis, CBD and hemp derivatives — trafficking offences in Saudi Arabia carry the gravest penalties in the region. Nothing ambiguous should go in the box.
  • Poppy seeds — khus khus — a narcotic precursor here as elsewhere in the Gulf. Check the ingredient panel on masalas and ready-mixes.
  • Vape devices, e-cigarette liquid, aerosols and pressurised cans — not accepted on the air leg regardless of the destination rule.
  • Fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds and live plant material — phytosanitary refusal, no exceptions for a small quantity.
  • Loose lithium cells and power banks — a battery inside its device is fine; a spare in the same carton is not.

Allowed with care

  • Sealed dry food — filter coffee powder, poppy-free podis, chakli, mixture, dry fruit and factory-sealed sweets. Labelled, listed on the declaration, and dry all the way through.
  • Silk sarees, abayas, wedding and festival clothing — unrestricted. Declare a fair value; a suspiciously low one is what earns an inspection.
  • Prescription tablets — sealed strips with prescription and Iqama, in a quantity that reads as personal use.
  • Academic and professional documents — transcripts, degree certificates, experience letters, attested originals. The fastest and most reliable thing on this lane.
  • Books and study material — academic texts, Islamic literature, children's schoolbooks. Declare titles.
  • Electronics and non-precious jewellery — make, model and honest value on the invoice. Gold and precious metal do not ship at all.
06 — What goes Bangalore → Saudi Arabia

Nurses, engineers, Umrah season and a great deal of paperwork.

The Bengaluru–Saudi flow is built on work. Healthcare staff recruited out of Karnataka's nursing and allied-health colleges, engineers on long project contracts in the Eastern Province, IT people on Saudi digital programmes — and the pilgrimage traffic that runs alongside all of it.

Attested paperwork for work and family visas

Degree and nursing-council certificates, marriage and birth certificates, experience letters — attested by the MEA and the Saudi embassy and couriered to an employer, a recruiter or a mandoob in Riyadh or Jeddah. Someone's joining date usually depends on this envelope arriving, so it goes express with a tracked AWB.

Umrah and Hajj season parcels

A genuine seasonal pattern rather than a marketing line. Families in Bengaluru send ihram sets, spare spectacles, prescription tablets, chargers and forgotten documents to relatives already in Makkah or Madinah. Hotel deliveries need the guest's full name as printed on the passport, the hotel name and the room or group booking reference, plus a Saudi mobile that is switched on.

Healthcare and engineering households

Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Khobar, Jubail and the compounds. Clothing, school records for children changing schools, medicines against prescription, replacement spectacles, and the small domestic things that are cheaper to send than to buy again.

Ramadan and Eid shipments

Volume rises for a full month before Ramadan and again before Eid al-Fitr. Clothing for the family, dry fruit, dates going one way and coming back the other, sealed sweets. Customs and last-mile hours both compress during the fasting month, so send with ten days in hand.

Commercial samples and SABER conformity

Bengaluru brands selling into Saudi Arabia meet a conformity regime — SABER and the SASO standards behind it — that regulated product categories must satisfy before they are cleared for commercial import. Samples and small consignments still need the invoice, HS codes and honest values; tell us what the goods are and we will tell you what the shipment is likely to be asked for.

Karnataka food, sent dry

Filter coffee powder, sealed podis, chakli, kodubale, banana chips, dry fruit. Saudi Arabia accepts sealed and labelled dry food more readily than senders expect — dairy content is not the barrier it is for the United States. What it will not accept is anything wet, anything with alcohol in the recipe, and anything nobody wrote on the declaration.

07 — Tracking & proof of delivery

The AWB immediately. The POD when it is signed.

You get the AWB number on WhatsApp as soon as the booking is made, at whatever hour that happens — the HSR Layout desk is staffed around the clock. Follow it at dtdc.in. On this lane the customs stage is where tracking goes quietest, and 48 to 72 hours without a scan at Riyadh or Jeddah is ordinary rather than alarming. If it turns into a documented hold, send us the AWB and we will chase the query from this end instead of leaving you on an international helpline.

08 — Three questions about Saudi Arabia shipments

Asked most often on this lane.

All my cousin has given me is a Riyadh PO Box. Is that enough for a parcel?

Not for a parcel that has to be handed over and signed for. Saudi Arabia runs a national address system, and the useful version of it is a building number, a street name, a district, the city and a postcode, with a four-digit additional number appended. Many residents also know their short address — four letters followed by four digits — which resolves to exactly the same location and is easier to send over WhatsApp. Ask your cousin for whichever of those he has, plus a Saudi mobile number that is actually in use. A PO Box will get a document envelope to a post office; it will not get a carton to a flat in Al Malaz.

My parents are going for Umrah. Can I send them medicines and a few things while they're there?

Yes, and it is one of the more common bookings we take from Bengaluru during the season. Ship to the hotel in Makkah or Madinah rather than to a general delivery address, and give us the guest name exactly as it appears on the passport, the hotel name and area, the booking or group reference, and a Saudi mobile — a visitor on an Umrah visa has no Iqama, so the passport name is what customs and the hotel desk both work from. Medicines still need the sealed strip and the prescription copy in the box. Send it early: with express at 4–6 working days plus clearance, a parcel posted three days before they fly out will not reach them before they fly home.

We're sending product samples to a Saudi distributor. What is SABER and does it apply to us?

SABER is the Saudi online conformity platform, and the SASO standards behind it govern which regulated products may be imported and sold. It is the importer's obligation rather than the courier's, but it reaches your shipment because a regulated product arriving without the right conformity behind it can be refused entry no matter how good the paperwork on our side is. Electronics, toys, cosmetics and food-contact goods are the categories that most often surprise a first-time Bengaluru exporter. Practically: send us the product description and HS code, we will prepare a clean commercial invoice, and have your distributor confirm what their side needs registered before the box leaves HSR Layout. That single conversation saves more shipments on this lane than anything else we do.
