02 — How this lane runs

Collections from the old trading city, NH44 the whole way, delivery either side of the GT Road.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

Sixty to ninety minutes from your call in the core city. A large share of what moves on this lane originates in the old commercial quarter — Chickpet, Avenue Road, Balepet and the cloth streets that supply Bengaluru's furnishing and textile trade — and those are lanes a van cannot always reach, so our rider walks the last stretch to the shop counter. Basavanagudi and the Nagarbhavi side add the household half. Cartons for this route get measured as well as weighed at your door, because on home furnishings the tape measure decides the bill more often than the scale does.

STEP

Bengaluru sortation.

Handed into the DTDC Bengaluru facility the same evening and scanned onto that night's northbound line-haul. Two thousand two hundred kilometres is not a distance that forgives a late booking — a consignment that misses tonight's departure does not lose an hour, it loses a full working day, and on a five-to-six day band that is a fifth of the transit.

STEP

NH44 and the GT Road.

Hyderabad, Nagpur, Jhansi, Gwalior, Agra, then through the Delhi ring and out onto the Grand Trunk Road for the last ninety kilometres to Panipat. It is one uninterrupted trunk corridor with no ghat section and no seasonal diversion, which is why a distance this large still holds a predictable band. Express lifts out of Kempegowda instead and lands the parcel in 3–4 working days.

STEP

Panipat delivery.

Last mile across the 132xxx series. The city is split lengthwise by NH44, and that matters more here than the map suggests: the sector colonies, Model Town and the Assandh Road side sit on one flank, the old city bazaars and the handloom market on the other, and a rider who crosses at the wrong interchange loses half an hour. Give us the side of the highway along with the address. The industrial estates and the refinery township at Baholi are separate again — those are gate deliveries, covered below.

STEP

POD on WhatsApp.

Whatever the receiver signs — a slip, a stamped gate register entry, a signature image — comes back to you on WhatsApp inside the hour. For a stores-gate delivery we forward the gate receipt number as well, because that is the reference an export house will ask you for.

03 — Rate band on this lane

Starting rates, Bangalore → Panipat.

Charged on actual or volumetric weight, whichever comes out higher, plus the fuel surcharge in force on the day you book. GST is added on top.

  • Standard parcel (surface) from ₹120 / kg 5–6 working days. Min billable 5 kg.
  • Express parcel (air) from ₹180 / kg 3–4 working days. Door delivery.
  • Bulk consignment (35 kg+) from ₹120 / kg Min 35 kg. Surface routing.

Pickup is free from any Bengaluru address on this route once the consignment reaches 5 kg. Volumetric weight is (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 5000. Because it is a product of three numbers, the dimension worth fixing is the one people never think about — the height of the carton. Slack air at the top of a box costs exactly what fabric would cost in the same space, and a home-furnishings consignment is mostly slack air unless somebody presses it out. Winter fog across the northern plain in December and January can cost the road leg a day, which is the same window in which blanket and quilt traffic peaks in both directions.

04 — What goes Bangalore → Panipat

Buying-office samples, export paperwork, plant spares and family cartons.

Samples and strike-offs for the home-furnishings export houses

Panipat is where a very large part of India's rugs, durries, blankets, throws, cushion covers and table linen is made, much of it for export, and a great deal of Bengaluru's design and buying activity feeds into it. What travels north on this lane is the front end of that business: colour strike-offs, yarn cards, weave trials, printed artwork, approved counter-samples and the marked-up rejects going back with comments on them. Send flat pieces flat in a rigid carton rather than folded into a courier bag — a swatch that arrives creased or rubbed cannot be signed off, and the whole point of the shipment is a signature.

Order paperwork, inspection reports and shipping documents

The paper that goes with the cloth. Purchase orders, size and packing specifications, third-party inspection reports, lab test certificates for shrinkage or colourfastness, and the shipping document sets that have to reach an exporter's office before a container is booked. These are express bookings almost without exception, with the recipient's mobile on the AWB, and if there is a vessel cut-off or an inspection date attached, say so when you book — we will confirm the air movement the same evening rather than leaving you to guess from the tracking page.

Instrumentation and plant spares for the industrial belt

Panipat is not only a textile town. The refinery complex at Baholi, the fertiliser plant and the HSIIDC estates on the Sector 25 side draw engineered items from Bengaluru's instrumentation and automation firms — sensors, transmitters, valve positioners, control cards, calibrated gauges and gasket sets. Small, dense, expensive cargo that bills on actual weight, so it is cheap to move relative to what it is worth. We double-wall it, mark the weight on the outside, and put the PO number where a stores clerk can read it without opening anything.

Marketplace stock and returns, both directions

A great many of the home-furnishing listings a Bengaluru household buys online are dispatched from Panipat, and the return leg is a real flow of its own — a wrong-size rug, a colour that did not match, a bedcover going back to the seller. Book the return with the seller's return authorisation written on the box and a copy inside it; an unlabelled return at a Panipat warehouse gate will simply be refused, and the parcel will come back to you having cost you the freight twice.

Parcels home from Haryanvi households in Bengaluru

The steady, unglamorous half of the lane. People from Haryana working in Bengaluru's IT floors, hospitals, hotels and construction sites send parcels back to family the whole year round — a phone bought here, clothes, medicines with a prescription copy, dry snacks, gifts before Diwali and before the winter wedding season. Collected free from a PG room, a shared flat or a hostel anywhere in the city, at whatever hour suits the person paying for it.

Wedding trousseau and southern silks sent ahead

Haryana's wedding calendar is concentrated, and Bengaluru is a good city to buy silk in. Kanjeevaram and Mysore silk sarees, blouse material, jewellery boxes minus the jewellery, gift sets and printed cards travel this lane in the weeks before a function. Book these a clear week ahead of the date on surface, or express if you have left it late — and read the note on jewellery below before you pack anything into a saree fold.

05 — What you cannot send

A short, real list.

Network prohibitions first. The second card is written around what this particular trade puts in cartons — dyes, finishes and the things that travel with fabric — because that is where the refusals on this lane actually come from:

Banned outright

  • Liquids of every kind, sealed retail bottles included
  • Aerosols and pressurised containers
  • Flammable solids, matches and lighters
  • Industrial chemicals, solvents and thinners
  • Currency, bullion and loose precious stones
  • Alcohol, tobacco and anything perishable

Where Bengaluru → Panipat bookings go wrong

  • Dyestuffs, pigments and finishing auxiliaries — the refusal that belongs to this lane specifically. A sample of dye powder, a pot of pigment paste, a softener or a fixing agent sent along with a swatch set is a chemical consignment, not a textile one, and it cannot be booked on a parcel network in either powder or liquid form. Send the swatch and let the chemistry travel through a hazardous-goods agent; a dyed sample proves the shade far better than the dye does.
  • Latex backing compound and spray adhesives — used on rug and mat finishing and posted north with samples more often than you would expect. Adhesive in a can is a pressurised container, adhesive in a tin is a flammable liquid, and both stop the consignment at sortation.
  • Steam irons and garment steamers with water still in the tank — sent with a sampling kit, or bought in Bengaluru and posted home. The appliance itself is ordinary cargo. Water sitting in its reservoir is a liquid that will find its way out over 2,260 kilometres of handling and soak everything around it. Empty it, run it dry, and tape the tank shut.
  • Bulk used-clothing and rag lots — Panipat runs on recycled fibre, so people assume a mixed lot of old clothing moves at some concession. It does not. It bills exactly like any other soft cargo, on volumetric weight, and a commercial quantity needs an invoice and e-way documentation the same as new stock would. Compress it hard, declare it honestly, and ask us for the bulk band from 35 kg.
  • Gold and silver ornaments tucked into a saree fold — the trousseau habit that we have to say no to every wedding season. Jewellery, coins and bullion are outside courier carriage entirely, regardless of value, packing or declaration. Send the clothes and carry the jewellery yourself, or use a bank or a licensed valuables carrier for it.
06 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.

You get the AWB number on WhatsApp within minutes of the consignment being booked, you can check its position yourself at any hour on dtdc.in, and the proof of delivery follows inside an hour of the signature. Panipat's residential last mile is easy enough — the sector colonies, Model Town and the newer developments off Assandh Road are numbered and deliver to the door on a phone call. The commercial last mile needs more from you. The handloom and cloth market lanes off the GT Road are dense trading streets where a vehicle realistically gets in only in the morning window and where shop numbers repeat from one lane to the next, so a consignment there wants the market name, the shop number and a phone that somebody behind the counter will actually answer. Export-house units and the HSIIDC plots on the Sector 25 side deliver through a factory gate to a stores desk that closes long before the working day does — give us the registered unit name, the plot number, the stores contact and that cut-off time and we will aim the attempt inside it. The refinery township and plant addresses at Baholi are gate-pass addresses: name the department and the person who holds the pass, because a rider without a name at that barrier does not get through it, and the parcel goes back to the hub for a second attempt the next working day.

07 — Three questions about this lane

Specific to Bangalore → Panipat.

My sample carton is light but the box is big. How do I bring the bill down before I tape it?

Fix the height first, because it is the dimension nobody looks at and it multiplies against the other two. Volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5000, and you pay on that or the scale weight, whichever is larger. Take a typical made-ups sample carton at 60 × 45 × 40 cm: that measures out at 21.6 kg, so at the surface starting rate you are looking at from about ₹2,592 before fuel surcharge and GST no matter what the scale says. Press the same contents down and step into a 60 × 45 × 25 cm carton and you are at 13.5 kg — the width and length never changed, only the slack air at the top, and the bill dropped by roughly a third. Three things do most of the work: use a carton sized to the compressed load rather than to the loose one, do not double-box flat goods that need no cushioning, and fill any genuine void with the sample paperwork rather than with crumpled paper. WhatsApp us the outside dimensions before you seal it and we will tell you the billable figure and whether a different carton pays for itself.

Can you deliver into an export unit or the refinery side, or only to a city address?

Both, but they are different deliveries and the information we need is different. A city address in the sectors or Model Town needs a house number, the colony and a mobile — that is all. An export unit or an HSIIDC plot needs the unit name exactly as it is registered, the plot or shed number, the name of whoever runs the stores desk, and the hour that desk stops receiving; industrial receiving in Panipat commonly shuts several hours before the units themselves do, and an attempt made after it closes is a wasted day rather than a wasted hour. The refinery complex and its township at Baholi are stricter again — they are controlled-entry addresses, so the parcel has to be consigned to a named person in a named department who can either meet the rider at the gate or has an arrangement for parcels to be taken in. We will not pretend a rider can talk his way past a plant barrier. Tell us at booking that the address is inside a plant and we will set it up properly instead of discovering the problem on day five.

We run a Bengaluru buying office and send to Panipat every few weeks. Can that be a standing arrangement?

Yes, and it is the sensible way to run it. A regular sampling flow gets a contract rate sheet rather than a walk-in quote, a fixed collection slot so nobody in your office has to phone each time, and consolidated monthly billing against your GSTIN with the invoices reconciled to AWB numbers so your accounts team can match freight to a purchase order. Practically, three habits save the most money and trouble on a route this long. Consolidate — one properly filled 12 kg carton is meaningfully cheaper than three half-empty 4 kg ones, and the surface band from 35 kg is cheaper again. Split by urgency rather than sending everything the same way: approvals with a date attached go express, bulk sample stock goes surface. And put the buyer reference and season code on the outside of every box, because a Panipat export house running twenty programmes at once cannot identify an unlabelled carton and will leave it standing at the gate. Send us a typical week's volume on WhatsApp and we will price it properly.
