Indonesian Customs is the slowest and most document-driven step in this batch, and it is honest to say so. Parcels with a complete invoice and the recipient's identity number move through. Parcels missing either sit, and nobody at the border chases the sender for the information.

A 2 kg parcel — say marketing collateral and two product samples for a Jakarta distributor, about 30 × 25 × 15 cm:

What you’ll need at pickup.
Indonesia asks for more than its neighbours do, and pretending otherwise would only cost you time later. The good news is that the requirements are knowable in advance — every one of them can be collected before the parcel leaves your address.
KYC of the sender
The sender named on the AWB provides one photo ID — Aadhaar, passport or a driving licence. It is photographed at the door and not retained by us afterwards. Company shipments: GSTIN as well, so the invoice and the consignment agree.
The consignee's Indonesian ID number
This is the single most important field on an Indonesia-bound parcel and the one Bengaluru senders have never had to think about before. Indonesian Customs expects the recipient's tax number (NPWP) or national identity number (NIK) to be recorded against an inbound consignment. Without it the parcel is not refused so much as parked. Ask your recipient for it before you pack, not after.
A commercial invoice that is specific
Indonesia's duty-free value allowance on parcels is very low — a few dollars — so most shipments are assessed for duty and VAT rather than released free, and the consignee pays. That makes the invoice the working document of the whole journey. Line items, quantity, unit value, HS codes. "Gift" written on a box full of samples is what causes an inspection.
What Indonesia doesn’t let in.
Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim-majority country and Bea Cukai applies that framework to food and personal goods, alongside some of the harshest narcotics law anywhere. These are Indonesian rules, stated plainly, and the consequences fall on the recipient.
Don’t even try
- Controlled drugs in any quantity — Indonesia applies the death penalty for trafficking and treats personal-use quantities severely. Nothing that could be mistaken for a narcotic should be within reach of this parcel, and prescription medicine travels only with full documentation.
- Pork and pork-derived ingredients — including gelatine in sweets and capsule shells. Sealed packaging is not a defence; the ingredient list is what is read.
- Alcohol, and food containing it — provincial rules vary and courier rules do not. Do not ship it.
- Obscene material, and anything treated as religiously or politically offensive — refused at the border, with a broader definition than most senders expect.
- Unregistered food, cosmetics, supplements and medicines for sale — BPOM registration governs anything entering the Indonesian market commercially. A D2C brand cannot sample its way around this; a genuine personal gift is a different matter.
- Counterfeit branded goods and pirated media — seized.
- Weapons, ammunition and imitation firearms — including airsoft and decorative pieces.
- Aerosols, liquids, lithium cells above 100 Wh — air-safety and courier rules, universal.
Allowed with care
- Silk sarees and textiles — Kanjeevaram, Mysore silk, cottons and garment samples. Declare item, quantity and a fair unit value. Textiles are among the easier categories here.
- Filter coffee powder and sealed dry snacks — factory-packed with a printed ingredient list. Write "vegetarian, contains no pork derivative and no alcohol" on the invoice; it answers the only question that matters and costs you one line. Keep quantities plainly personal.
- Sandalwood soap and powder — manufactured goods, straightforward. Sandalwood oil is a liquid and does not fly.
- Hindu devotional and decorative items — genuinely uncomplicated, and more so for Bali, which is Hindu-majority and has a real domestic market for Indian brass, lamps and temple craft. Describe the piece for what it is on the invoice.
- Medicines with a prescription — sealed strips, prescription with the doctor's registration number, recipient's name matching their identity document. No injectables, nothing controlled.
- Hardware samples, dev boards and laptops — declare make, model and value. Batteries installed inside the device, never loose. Mains-powered consumer products intended for sale face separate Indonesian certification requirements, so check with your buyer first.
Jakarta expansion, Bali orders, and a small close-knit diaspora.
Bengaluru's traffic to Indonesia is younger than its traffic to Malaysia or Singapore, and it looks different for it — more of it is a company entering a market than a family sending something home.
Southeast Asia market-entry shipments
Jakarta is one of the largest consumer markets in the region and Bengaluru software and D2C companies have been opening there steadily. What moves is unglamorous: signed agreements, marketing collateral, demo hardware, retail samples for a distributor meeting. Commercial invoice with HS codes every time, and the consignee's NPWP if it is a company.
Bali decorative and craft orders
Bali is Hindu-majority with an enormous hospitality and wellness industry, and Indian brass lamps, temple craft, incense holders and carved pieces have a working market there. Bengaluru's Chickpet and Avenue Road suppliers ship into it. Note that the parcel clears through Java or Denpasar and then still has an island leg — build in the extra days.
Family parcels to Jakarta
Indonesia's Indian community is long-settled and concentrated — Pasar Baru in Central Jakarta above all — and Bengaluru families with relatives or postings there send the usual things: filter coffee powder, sealed dry snacks, festival clothing, a saree ahead of an occasion. Modest quantities, sealed, labelled, invoice specific.
Postings and relocation traffic
Bengaluru engineers on Indonesian assignments, and people who have already moved and want the rest of their belongings to follow. Books, clothes, a monitor, kitchen kit. Volumetric weight usually decides the bill on a consignment like this, so let us measure the carton before you commit.
Documents and corporate paperwork
Apostilled company papers, signed contracts, audit files and shipping documents between Bengaluru companies and Indonesian partners or subsidiaries. Always express, always tracked, and worth telling us the deadline attached to it.

Why does Indonesian customs need my recipient's tax number?
Because Indonesian Customs records inbound consignments against the recipient's identity, and without that number the system has nowhere to put your parcel. Practically, they expect the consignee's NPWP tax number or their NIK national identity number, and the difference between having it and not having it is the difference between a parcel that clears and a parcel that sits at the border while nobody contacts anyone. It feels intrusive if you have only ever shipped to the UK or the Gulf, but it is routine in Indonesia and your recipient will hand it over without blinking. Ask them for it while you are packing. Will my recipient in Jakarta be charged duty on a small gift parcel?
Probably, and it is kinder to warn them than to let them find out at the door. Indonesia's duty-free allowance on imported parcels is unusually low — a matter of a few dollars in value, far below what most countries allow — so the great majority of shipments are assessed for import duty and VAT rather than waved through, and the consignee settles it before release. It is not a large sum on a family parcel, but it is not nothing either, and someone expecting a free gift can be annoyed by a bill. The way to keep it small and quick is to declare an honest value: under-declaring invites an inspection, which costs days, and over-declaring costs your recipient money for no reason.
How much longer does Bali or Sumatra take than Jakarta?
Add a couple of days beyond the 6–9 working day express band, sometimes more for smaller towns, and understand why: the delay is not customs, it is geography. Indonesia is an archipelago of roughly seventeen thousand islands and clearance concentrates around the main gateways, so a parcel to Denpasar, Medan, Makassar or anywhere in Kalimantan or eastern Indonesia clears first and then still has a domestic hop to make. Java addresses — Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta — sit inside the quoted band comfortably.
