02 — How this lane runs

Collected across east Bengaluru, hauled to the Bengal hub, delivered across a zone-planned town.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

Inside 60–90 minutes in the central city; two hours if you are out at Kadugodi, Varthur or the far end of Mahadevapura, where a peak-hour run across the eastern corridor eats the schedule. Tech-park and campus pickups at CV Raman Nagar and Mahadevapura need a gate pass raised by your facilities or security desk — send us the block and floor with the booking and we will time the visit to when the pass is live.

STEP

Bengaluru sortation.

Handed into DTDC's Bengaluru facility the same evening so the consignment rides that night rather than sitting a day at origin. On a lane this long the evening cut-off is the single most useful thing a sender can plan around, and it costs nothing to hit it.

STEP

Line-haul to Bengal.

East across the country to the Bengal hub, then out along the industrial corridor that runs west of Kolkata — the same axis the steel town was built on. Surface is 4–5 working days end to end. Express departs Kempegowda by air, clears the Kolkata hub and completes the road stretch to Durgapur in 2–3.

STEP

Durgapur delivery.

Off the local beats across the 713xxx series. City Centre, Bidhannagar, Benachity, Muchipara and the arterial stretch along the highway are worked daily and deliver cleanly. The steel township quarters, the plant estate and the campuses have gate procedures rather than doorsteps, and Andal, Panagarh and the Kanksa side sit on a longer outer beat.

STEP

POD on WhatsApp.

Once signed for, the proof of delivery reaches you on WhatsApp inside the hour — signature image or stamped slip, and a receiving-office stamp where the consignee is a company or a college.

03 — Rate band on this lane

Starting rates, Bangalore → Durgapur.

Priced on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher, plus the fuel surcharge in force when you book. GST is extra.

  • Standard parcel (surface) from ₹120 / kg 4–5 working days. Min billable 5 kg.
  • Express parcel (air) from ₹180 / kg 2–3 working days. Door delivery.
  • Bulk consignment (35 kg+) from ₹120 / kg Min 35 kg. Surface routing.

Pickup is free across Bengaluru at 5 kg and above, campuses and tech parks included. Volumetric weight is (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000, and it is what catches student relocations on this lane — a hostel move is bedding, a mattress roll and an empty-ish trunk, which measures far heavier than it weighs. Send us the box dimensions on WhatsApp before you seal anything and we will tell you which number you will be billed on.

04 — What goes Bangalore → Durgapur

Campus shipments, plant vendor supplies, and the two-way traffic of an engineering town.

Hostel and campus shipments

Durgapur is an engineering-education town well beyond its steel plant — the NIT is the anchor, with a spread of private engineering and management colleges around it — and the calendar drives this lane hard. Term start brings bedding, a study lamp, a printer, a monitor and cartons of books going north; term end and placement season send the same things back to Bengaluru when a student takes a job here. Book against the academic dates, not the festival ones.

Vendor supplies for the plant and its ancillaries

The steel plant and the alloy works anchor a long tail of ancillary units and fabrication shops, and a lot of what they buy — control gear, sensors, instrumentation, drives, precision components, testing equipment — is stocked by Bengaluru distributors. These parcels are small, dense and time-sensitive, and they bill on actual weight rather than volume. Declare the value, attach the invoice, and carry the e-way bill above ₹50,000.

Laptops and work hardware on transfer

There is a real professional pipeline between this town's engineering graduates and Bengaluru's technology employers, and hardware follows people along it. Machines going out to someone working remotely, asset returns after a resignation, docking kits, test devices. A laptop with its battery installed inside the machine travels; a spare cell or a loose power bank does not, and that distinction is worth knowing before you pack rather than at the door.

Project and lab equipment for final-year work

Microcontroller boards, sensor kits, 3D-printed parts, small motors, printed circuit boards, casings and enclosures ordered from Bengaluru suppliers for college projects. All fine and all routine — the trouble starts when a battery pack, a solvent or a canned cleaner goes into the same box. Split those out before you book and the rest sails through.

Family parcels to the townships

Durgapur's residential grid is full of families whose children have moved south for work, and the parcels going back are unremarkable and constant — medicines in their original prescription packaging, a phone, warm clothing before the winter, documents needing a signature at home, dry sweets and packaged snacks. Nearly all of it is under 5 kg and nearly all of it goes surface.

Printed reports, drawings and certificates

Bound project reports, technical drawings, inspection and calibration certificates, degree and transcript envelopes for verification, and signed contract sets moving between Bengaluru offices and Durgapur institutions or firms. Paper is heavy for its size and cheap to ship by weight; what it needs is a rigid envelope or a tube so it does not arrive creased, and a recipient mobile on the AWB.

05 — What you cannot send

A short, real list.

Prohibited by DTDC and across the network. The second block covers what people actually try to put in a box on a route that ends in a campus-and-plant town:

Banned outright

  • Laboratory chemicals, reagents and unlabelled compounds
  • Flammable solvents, spirit and solder flux thinners
  • Aerosols, canned air and pressurised cleaners
  • Gas cylinders and cartridges of any size
  • Currency, bullion and valuables without declared cover
  • Perishables and anything requiring refrigeration

Common Bengaluru → Durgapur misjudgements

  • Drones and quadcopter projects with the battery fitted — the most frequent refusal on this lane, and almost always a final-year project rather than a toy. The airframe ships; the LiPo pack does not travel installed, and a loose LiPo does not travel at all. Buy the battery at the destination and send the rest.
  • Spare lithium packs, e-bike and e-scooter batteries — a spare cell shipped on its own is refused whatever its capacity, and anything above 100 Wh is out on the air leg regardless of how it is packed. A battery sealed inside the device it powers is a normal booking.
  • Project chemicals and reagent bottles — small quantities from a college lab feel harmless and are not. Anything corrosive, flammable or unlabelled is refused at booking, and a bottle hidden inside a kit box risks the whole consignment being held.
  • Canned contact cleaner and compressed air for electronics — travels with hardware more often than any other prohibited item on this route. Pressurised container, refused on both surface and air.
  • Mattresses, quilts and bedding rolls at the start of term — not banned, but read the footnote above before you book. Bedding is the classic volumetric trap on a student lane; a roll that weighs 6 kg can bill at three times that, and it is very often cheaper to buy locally than to ship 1,740 kilometres.
06 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp. Track on dtdc.in. POD when it lands.

Your AWB arrives on WhatsApp the moment the parcel is booked into DTDC and tracks at dtdc.in from the first Bengaluru scan to the delivery event. The Durgapur-side thing to understand is the addressing. This is a planned town laid out in lettered zones, streets and quarter numbers rather than in named roads, so an address that reads like a code — a zone, a street number, a quarter number — is completely correct locally and completely unresolvable to a map search. Write it exactly as the recipient writes it, add the post office and the six-digit pin, and put a working mobile on the AWB. The plant township and the college campuses are gated: a hostel delivery needs the hostel name and the student's room and roll number, and the warden's or security desk's hours decide when a rider can hand over — which matters most during vacations, when a hostel that looks open on a map is effectively shut.

07 — Three questions about this lane

Specific to Bangalore → Durgapur.

How should I address a parcel to a Durgapur zone or steel township quarter?

Copy the address character for character from whoever gave it to you and resist the urge to tidy it. Durgapur was laid out as a planned township, so the addresses that matter here are zone letters, street numbers and quarter numbers — locally unambiguous, and impossible for a mapping app to place. What we need on the AWB is the zone or sector, the street and quarter number as written, the locality name people actually use for it, the post office, the six-digit pin and a mobile number that is answered. If it is a plant township quarter, add the employee's works department, because entry is through a gate and the security desk checks. If it is a college hostel, give the hostel name, the room and the roll number, and tell us if the hostel is in a vacation period — an address that is correct but empty still produces an undelivered scan.

My son is joining a college in Durgapur. Is it cheaper to courier his things or buy them there?

Ship what is personal, dense and hard to replace; buy what is bulky and cheap. Books, a laptop, clothes, a hard drive, documents, instruments and anything with sentimental or replacement value are worth couriering — they are dense, so they bill close to their real weight, and at ₹120/kg on surface a 20 kg carton of books and clothes is genuinely inexpensive over 1,740 kilometres. Bedding, mattresses, buckets, a table fan and plastic storage are the opposite: they measure large and weigh nothing, so volumetric weight takes over and you can end up paying more in freight than the items cost in a Durgapur market. Send us the dimensions of the cartons you are planning on WhatsApp before you pack and we will price them honestly, including telling you when the answer is not to ship it.

Do you deliver to Andal, Panagarh, Bidhannagar and the outer areas as well?

Yes. Durgapur city itself — City Centre, Bidhannagar, Benachity, Muchipara and the highway-side localities — is a daily beat and holds the 4–5 working day surface transit. Andal, Panagarh, Kanksa and the addresses spreading out toward the coalfield edge are worked on an outer run and typically sit a working day behind, and the same is true of the smaller localities off the main corridor. Since the whole Asansol–Durgapur belt shares the 713xxx series, the pin code rather than the town name is what determines the beat and the price, so send us all six digits at booking. If your consignee is at a plant, a campus or a company address, add the receiving hours as well — the outer beats run to a schedule, and an attempt made after a gate closes has to be repeated the next working day.
