02 — How this lane runs

Five steps from Bengaluru to a Danish address.

STEP

Pickup, Bengaluru.

Free at 5 kg and above, at whatever hour you need it. Koramangala, Whitefield, Bellandur, Yelahanka — the HSR Layout desk runs a night shift, so a parcel decided on at eleven at night is collected that night rather than the following afternoon.

STEP

Pack & document.

Itemised invoice in INR or DKK, sender KYC, and the receiver's CPR-nummer for a personal shipment or CVR for a company one. Also the full Danish address including the floor and side — more on that below, because it is the single most common cause of a failed delivery on this lane.

STEP

BLR gateway.

Booked into the DTDC International facility at Kempegowda and away on the first onward lift. Bengaluru is a working international gateway, so nothing is lost getting the parcel to an airport that flies; from the European hub it moves on to Copenhagen-Kastrup.

STEP

Danish customs.

Kastrup handles a very high volume of express freight and handles it fast. A clean express consignment is commonly released inside 24 to 48 hours, which is why the bottleneck on Denmark shipments is almost never customs — it is the air leg, or the last mile out into Jutland.

STEP

Delivery in Denmark.

Final mile via PostNord or the local partner, either to the door or to a pakkeshop counter in a nearby supermarket depending on size and address. Danish postcodes are four digits and the city name matters: 8000 is Aarhus C, 2100 is Copenhagen Ø.

03 — Rate band, Bangalore → Denmark

Starting rates. Real pricing depends on weight.

You are billed on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater, plus the international fuel surcharge in force when you book. GST is extra. Danish import VAT is assessed on the declared value and paid by the receiver.

Starting per-kg rates

  • Express (5–7 days, door)from ₹1,400 / kg
  • Economy (8–12 days, door)from ₹1,000 / kg
  • Min billable weight0.5 kg
  • Pickup from BengaluruFree at 5 kg+

Volumetric formula: (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000.

Worked example

A 2 kg parcel — two silk sarees, a sealed pack of filter coffee and a set of documents, boxed at 32 × 24 × 10 cm so actual weight is what bills:

  • Express, 2 kg × ₹1,400≈ ₹2,800
  • + fuel surcharge (~25%)≈ ₹700
  • + GST 18%≈ ₹630
  • Approx total, express≈ ₹4,130

Indicative only. Fuel surcharge and rate cards move; we quote against the card current on your booking date.

04 — Customs & documentation

What you’ll need at pickup.

Denmark clears quickly when the paperwork is right, so the whole game here is getting it right before the box leaves Bengaluru. We do that with you at the door.

KYC of the sender

Any one photo ID in the name that goes on the airway bill — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. Photographed at your address, and it stays inside DTDC's booking record.

Invoice plus a Danish identifier

Every item, quantity and honest value in INR or DKK. The receiver's CPR-nummer for a personal parcel, or the company's CVR number for a business one, lets Danish customs match the consignment to an importer immediately instead of writing to ask.

The address, floor and side

A Danish flat address is not complete without the floor and the side of the landing — written like "3. th." or "2. tv.". Copenhagen apartment buildings have several doors per floor and no names on most of them. Missing that fragment is how a parcel ends up back at the depot.

05 — Denmark-specific restrictions

What Denmark doesn’t let in.

Denmark carries the EU import framework, and then adds a food rule that catches Indian senders more often than any other country in the region. Read the first item carefully before you pack a health parcel.

Don’t even try

  • Foods with added vitamins and minerals — Denmark requires prior approval for fortified foods, and it is genuinely stricter about this than its neighbours. Malted health drinks, protein powders, fortified nutrition mixes and many branded tonic products fall foul of it. This is the Denmark-specific trap, and a Bengaluru parent sending a health mix to a student walks into it regularly.
  • Meat and dairy from outside the EU — the EU-wide personal import ban. Ghee, milk peda, khoya sweets and dried meat products, sealed or otherwise.
  • Alcohol — courier networks do not carry it, whatever the personal allowance says.
  • Medicines without a prescription — the Danish Medicines Agency is strict, and unlabelled strips are treated as an illegal import.
  • Knives and imitation weapons — Danish weapons law is broad and covers decorative and souvenir pieces.
  • Seeds, saplings and fresh produce — plant-health rules; fresh curry leaves and coconut are refused every time.
  • Loose lithium cells and power banks — installed in the device only, and nothing above 100 Wh.
  • Aerosols, oils, perfume and liquids — the standard air restriction.

Allowed with care

  • Filter coffee powder — sealed, commercially packed, ingredients printed. Clears without fuss and is the most-requested item on the lane.
  • Plain dry snacks and podis — chakli, mixture, dry banana chips, milagai podi. Unfortified, no dairy, allergens listed on the invoice.
  • Silk sarees and dress material — Mysore silk and Kanjeevaram travel well. Declare a real value; the VAT is calculated from it and an implausible figure invites an inspection.
  • Prescription medicines — sealed strips, prescription with the doctor's registration number, a line stating the condition. No liquids, no injectables.
  • Books, transcripts and apostilled certificates — routine. Send express and keep the AWB.
  • Laptops and small electronics — declare make, model and serial. Battery fitted in the machine, never packed loose alongside.
06 — What goes Bangalore → Denmark

Shipping, pharma, and a community that is still small enough to know each other.

The Indian population in Denmark is smaller than in Sweden and rather newer, and it is concentrated around two industries that both have serious Bengaluru operations.

Shipping and logistics professionals

Maersk runs a major technology centre in Bengaluru, and people move between it and Copenhagen in both directions on multi-year assignments. Copenhagen is far and away our main delivery city on this lane, and a good share of the parcels are following someone who relocated three months earlier.

Pharma and life-sciences staff

Novo Nordisk and the wider Danish life-sciences sector have significant Bengaluru operations, which puts Indian scientists and analysts in Copenhagen, Hillerød and Kalundborg. Documents, personal effects and family parcels, generally to home addresses rather than sites.

Parents shipping to students

DTU north of Copenhagen, Aarhus University, Aalborg and Copenhagen Business School take a steady Indian intake, weighted to August. Books, cookware, bedding and clothing. Check the health-mix rule above before you pack one into the carton.

Wedding and festival clothing

Sarees, sherwanis and blouse pieces to Danish-Indian families, and stitching sent back the other way. The community is small enough that a single Copenhagen wedding generates several parcels from Bengaluru, often booked together.

Design and D2C samples

Bengaluru brands sending product samples to Danish design buyers and distributors — textiles, homeware, packaging mockups. Commercial invoice with HS codes, and a stated meeting date if there is one.

Documents for residence permits

Apostilled degrees, marriage certificates and employment letters for Danish residence and family-reunification applications. Deadline-bound, so these go express with the tracking shared upfront.

07 — Tracking & proof of delivery

AWB on WhatsApp, POD the day it lands.

The AWB reaches you on WhatsApp the moment the booking is made, and dtdc.in carries it from there. There is no scan while the parcel is in the air and none while Danish customs are processing it — both silences are normal. Once released it moves onto PostNord's own tracking in Denmark and your receiver is notified directly. We forward the proof of delivery to you within the hour of it landing.

08 — Three questions about Denmark shipments

Asked most often on this lane.

The address I've been given ends in "3. th." — is that a typo?

It is not, and leaving it out is the fastest way to have a parcel returned from Copenhagen. Danish flat addresses carry two extra pieces after the street and number: the floor, written as a numeral with a full stop, and the side of the landing — th. for the right-hand door and tv. for the left, with mf. used when there is a middle one. So "Nørrebrogade 45, 3. th." means the right-hand flat on the third floor. Danish apartment buildings routinely have three or four doors per landing and often no nameplate on any of them, so a courier holding an address without that fragment has nowhere to go and will leave it at a collection point or send it back. When you ask your family or colleague for their address, ask them to paste it exactly as they write it themselves rather than reconstructing it in Indian format. Add the four-digit postcode and a Danish mobile number and the delivery takes care of itself.

Can I send Horlicks, a health mix or a protein supplement to my daughter in Denmark?

Probably not, and this is where Denmark differs sharply from Sweden or Germany. Denmark requires prior approval for foods that have vitamins or minerals added to them, and it applies that rule to imports rather than only to shop shelves. Malted health drinks, fortified nutrition powders, many protein supplements and a number of branded tonics all sit inside that definition, even though nothing about them is dangerous and they are sold openly in every Bengaluru supermarket. A parcel containing them can be held or refused. What travels without argument is ordinary unfortified food: sealed filter coffee, dry podis, chakli, mixture, plain flours and spices in commercial packaging. If the thing you want to send has a nutrition panel listing added vitamins, tell us at booking and we will say plainly whether it is worth the risk — usually it is not, and the same product is buyable in Copenhagen for less than the freight.

Does sending to Aarhus or Aalborg instead of Copenhagen add time?

A day, typically, and occasionally two if you are going to a small Jutland town or one of the islands. The customs step is unchanged — everything clears through the same gateway regardless of where in Denmark it is going — so the extra time is purely domestic distribution across the Great Belt and up the peninsula. It is also where the collection-point habit becomes more pronounced: outside the dense Copenhagen postcodes, more parcels are routed to a pakkeshop counter in a local supermarket than delivered to a door, and the receiver is texted a code. Plan for 6–8 days end to end rather than the 5–7 we quote to a Copenhagen address, and if there is a date attached — a birthday, a wedding, a semester start — build in a working week of slack rather than a weekend.
