This lane is booked unusually often from north Bengaluru — Yelahanka, Hebbal, Sadashivanagar and Sanjaynagar — by parents with a child at a Dehradun school and by service and retired-service households with family in the valley. Where a trunk has to be weighed and taped at your door, say so and the rider will bring the materials with him.

Term-start weeks are the one time this lane goes genuinely heavy, and in those weeks booking in the morning rather than the evening is the single cheapest way to buy yourself a day — the network is carrying everybody else's trunks at the same time you are.

The long haul up through central India into the northern network, then across the top of the plain and into Uttarakhand. Roughly 2,390 kilometres — among the longest surface routes we quote — at 5–6 working days, or 3–4 on the air leg out of Kempegowda. If a school reporting date, a course start or a medical appointment is attached to the shipment, book air. On a lane this length surface has no room to absorb a bad day.

Last mile across the 2480xx range. Rajpur Road, Chakrata Road, the Sahastradhara Road side, Clement Town and the newer colonies deliver like ordinary city addresses. The Clock Tower and Paltan Bazaar lanes are walk-in territory. The schools, the academies and the research institutes are gated establishments that receive at an office, not at a room. Selaqui, Doiwala and the industrial belt out towards the airport receive at stores gates. Mussoorie is up the hill and is a separate beat.

Pickup is free anywhere in Bengaluru on this lane once the consignment reaches 5 kg. Volumetric weight is (L × W × H in centimetres) ÷ 5000, and a school trunk is the classic case: quilts, blazers, a razai and a pair of boots fill a very large box for a modest weight, and the box is what you pay for. Vacuum-bag the bedding, put shoes and books at the bottom to use the dead space, and you can often drop a whole rate band. A term's kit that crosses 35 kg moves onto the bulk rate at ₹120/kg on surface. Fog at the top of the plain in late December and January can cost the surface leg a day.

Boarding-school trunks and term-start shipments
This is what the lane is built around. Dehradun's boarding schools take children from all over the country, Bengaluru included, and every term begins with trunks: bedding and a razai, uniforms and games kit, shoes, books and stationery, a blazer that has been let out over the holidays. Send it to arrive before the reporting date, not on it — a trunk that lands the day the child does has nowhere to go. Name-tag everything, tape the trunk shut rather than relying on a lock, and put the admission number on the outside as well as the child's name and house.
Mid-term top-ups
The quieter, steadier flow: a replacement pair of games shoes, a second sweater when the valley turns colder than anyone expected, prescription spectacles, a set of textbooks, sports gear for a season that has just started. Small, light, and usually urgent because a child has asked for it — express is worth the difference here, and a 3–4 day arrival is a very different experience from a 5–6 day one when the request came by phone on a Sunday.
Admission, board and transfer paperwork
Original documents move on this lane constantly — transfer certificates, migration and board registration papers, mark sheets, medical and vaccination records, guardianship and consent forms. Always express, always with the school or institute office as the addressee and a phone number on the waybill. Academy and service-family parcels
Dehradun is a training-academy town and a long-established retirement posting for service families, and both generate steady traffic. Kit, civilian clothing, books, documents and personal effects travel this lane in both directions. Academy addresses are gated and formal: give the establishment name in full, the course and company or squadron where there is one, the recipient's full name and number, and expect the parcel to be receipted at an office rather than handed to the individual.
Research-campus and institute parcels
The valley's forestry, geological, survey and petroleum institutions bring researchers and trainees from across the country, and their parcels are books, printed theses, instruments, laptops and personal effects. Send them to the institute name with the division and a mobile number. One hard limit worth knowing before you pack anything for a forestry address: seeds, soil and plant material cannot travel by courier, however small the sample.
Boxes for parents in the valley
A large share of this lane is the ordinary business of adult children in Bengaluru looking after parents who have settled in Doon: medicines with the prescription copy, medical reports and scans, a replacement appliance, warm bedding before winter, documents needing a signature, sealed dry snacks from home. Two different kinds of rule apply on this lane. The network prohibitions below are absolute. The second card mixes them with the receiving rules that Dehradun's schools and academies apply at their own gates, which are just as capable of stopping a parcel:

What gets stopped on this route, and by whom
- Aerosol deodorant, shoe spray and spray polish — packed into a school trunk almost automatically, and a pressurised can is refused at screening whatever else is in the box. This one alone holds up more term-start trunks than anything else. Roll-on and stick deodorant, tinned polish and a brush are all fine.
- Tuck, homemade snacks and sweets for a boarder — here the courier is not the obstacle; the school is. Most boarding houses do not permit food to be received by post and will hold or return it, and a sealed packet that sits in an office for a fortnight is money wasted. Check the school's own list before you pack, and if in doubt send the books and leave the laddoos.
- Phones, smart watches and power banks for a student — two separate problems stacked on one another. A loose power bank or spare lithium cell is refused by the network outright, and a device installed in a laptop is treated differently from a spare cell. Independently of that, most boarding schools prohibit personal devices and will confiscate one that arrives by parcel. Ask the house master before you spend the freight.
- Camping stove canisters, lighter fuel and fire-starter blocks — the valley is a trekking base and these get packed with outdoor kit as a matter of habit. Pressurised canisters and flammable fuels are excluded on surface and air alike. The stove body, the tent, the poles and the sleeping bag all travel perfectly well.
- Seeds, soil, saplings and plant material — sent to and from forestry and research addresses more often on this lane than on any other we run. Plant material and soil are subject to their own regulated movement rules and are not courier consignments; a research institute has an established pathway for them and will tell the recipient what it is.

Dehradun's last mile is dominated by institutions, and institutions receive differently from houses. A school takes delivery at its office or its mail room and the signature on your POD will be an office clerk's, not your child's — that is normal here and not a sign anything went wrong; the trunk then goes to the house in the school's own time, which can be a day or two in a busy week. Academies and research institutes work the same way behind a gate, and need the establishment name, the course or division, the recipient's full name and a mobile the gate can actually call. Ordinary residential addresses on Rajpur Road, Chakrata Road, the Sahastradhara side and Clement Town deliver on a house number and a phone like anywhere else, while the Paltan Bazaar and Clock Tower lanes are too tight for a vehicle and the rider walks in. Whatever the address type, a working phone number at the Dehradun end is what turns a two-attempt delivery into a one-attempt one, and on a 2,390 km lane a repeat attempt costs a full working day.

My child is starting at a Dehradun boarding school. When should the trunk be sent, and what will the school actually accept?
Send it to arrive several days before the reporting date rather than on it. Surface takes 5–6 working days from Bengaluru and term-start weeks are the busiest this lane gets, so a trunk posted the week before term is cutting it fine; ten days ahead on surface, or 3–4 days ahead on express, is comfortable. Address it to the school by name with the child's full name, class or form, house, and admission number if you have one, plus a parent's mobile — schools receive at an office and match a trunk to a child by the number on it, not by the surname. On what goes in: uniforms, bedding, books, shoes, stationery and games kit are exactly what the school expects. What causes trouble is everything else. Aerosol deodorant and shoe spray will stop the parcel at screening before it ever leaves. Food and tuck are usually against the boarding house's own rules and will be held or returned. Personal phones and smart watches are prohibited at most schools and confiscated on arrival, and a loose power bank is refused by the network anyway. Read the school's kit list, pack to it, and tape the trunk rather than locking it — a locked trunk that has to be opened for inspection is opened by force.
How should I address a parcel to a cadet or a course member at one of the Dehradun academies?
Formally and completely, because a training establishment is a gated address with its own receiving procedure and a rider does not get past the gate on a first name. Write the establishment's full name, the course number and the company, squadron or section where the recipient has one, then the recipient's full name and rank or designation, then the pin, and a mobile number that will be answered — knowing that a cadet or trainee under instruction may not be able to answer it during the day. That last point is why we ask you to give us a second number, an officer's or a family contact's, wherever you can. The parcel will be receipted at an establishment office or a mail room and passed on internally, so the POD signature will not be the recipient's and delivery may show as complete a day or two before it actually reaches them. Keep the contents plain — clothing, books, documents, personal effects — and leave out anything the network already refuses, because a consignment held at screening on a lane this long is effectively a week lost.
Is Mussoorie delivered on a Dehradun booking?
No. Mussoorie sits about 35 kilometres up the hill from the valley floor on its own pin code and its own delivery beat, and it is quoted as a separate lane. The road up is a mountain road, which is the real reason for the distinction rather than the distance: it is slow, it is single-file in stretches, and through the monsoon months landslides and rockfall genuinely close it, sometimes for more than a day at a time. Deliveries on the hill also run on a lighter schedule than in the city, so an address in Mussoorie should be planned with at least an extra day beyond the Dehradun figure, and more in July and August. The same applies to the academy and school addresses on the hill, which are gated establishments as well as hill addresses.
