Most of this lane starts in the old trading quarter — Chickpet, Avenue Road, Balepet and the electrical and tool shops on SP Road — with the rest from residential addresses out towards Kalyan Nagar. Those bazaar lanes take a two-wheeler and not much else, and the shops trade until late, so we collect in the evening and carry the carton out to the vehicle rather than asking a shopkeeper to close early.

Booked into DTDC’s Bengaluru facility the same night. This is one of the longer domestic runs out of the city, and the difference between tonight’s departure and tomorrow’s is a working day on the delivery date — worth a late collection almost every time.

Up the NH44 spine through Hyderabad and Nagpur, then across the Gwalior and Agra stretch into western Uttar Pradesh. Surface takes 5–6 working days over that distance, which is genuinely long, and it is why express earns its money on this lane more often than on shorter ones: 3–4 days by air, and far less exposure to a December or January fog that can hold up road movement across the whole northern plain.

Last-mile off the Aligarh hub across the 202xxx pins. Civil Lines, Marris Road and the Ramghat Road colonies are ordinary door deliveries. The lock trade is not: the Talanagri industrial area outside the city runs on gates and stores hours, and the older manufacturing quarters around the Sasni Gate side are hundreds of small workshops in lanes where a firm is known by its proprietor rather than by any number on a wall.

Pickup is free anywhere in Bengaluru on this lane at 5 kg and above. Volumetric formula: (L × W × H cm) ÷ 5000 — but note that hardware inverts the usual problem. On most routes the box bills higher than the contents; here a carton of locks, hinges or brass fittings is small and very heavy, so the scale wins and a 15 kg parcel can be the size of a shoebox. Two things follow: strap and double-wall every dense carton, and expect a real number on the invoice rather than a light one. December and January fog can add a day to the surface leg.

Sample locks and key sets for matching
The everyday consignment on this route. A Bengaluru hardware dealer or a builder’s procurement desk sends a physical lock north so the maker can match a keyway, cut a master-key suite to an existing set, or copy a finish and a size exactly. Small, dense, and worth declaring properly on the docket — a dozen padlocks is a 6 or 7 kg parcel that would look like nothing on a photograph.
Warranty and rejection lots going back
Cylinders that bind, handles with a plating fault, a batch where the strike plates came in the wrong finish. These go back to the manufacturer for replacement or credit, and the paperwork is what makes them go smoothly: the original invoice number on a delivery challan inside the carton, a duplicate in a pouch taped outside, and photographs taken before we seal it.

Where hardware bookings go wrong
- Electroplating chemicals and pickling acid — nickel and chrome salts, brightener solutions, acid for pickling. These are corrosive dangerous goods, they are refused on every service, and a leaking container in a sorting hub damages other people’s consignments as well as your own. Send the sample part; let the plating shop buy its own chemistry.
- Aerosol lacquer, spray primer and thinner — the finishing side of the same trade. Pressurised cans are excluded outright and thinner is a flammable liquid; neither has a routing that works.
- Cordless tool battery packs and loose 18 V cells — a driver or a grinder can travel, but the spare pack cannot, and a battery rattling loose in the same carton stops the whole consignment. Sealed inside the tool it can be routed on surface if you tell us at booking.
- Strong neodymium magnets — magnetised material is a restricted class on air services because of what it does to aircraft instruments, and a box of unshielded rare-earth magnets will be stopped. If magnets genuinely have to move, say so before pickup so the consignment is booked on the right service and shielded properly.
- Cash tucked in with the keys — an old habit in the trade and a straightforward exclusion. Currency travels on no courier network and carries no cover if it disappears. Settle it by bank transfer against the invoice.

Your AWB number goes out on WhatsApp as soon as the consignment is booked into DTDC, tracks publicly at dtdc.in, and the POD image follows within an hour of delivery. Two very different address problems sit at the far end of this lane. A workshop consignment needs the registered firm name, the proprietor’s name — because that is how the lane actually knows the unit — the plot or shed number if it is in Talanagri, the nearest crossing if it is in the older manufacturing quarters, and a mobile answered during working hours; industrial units also keep receiving hours rather than a full day, so a parcel landing in the afternoon may be handed over the next morning. A university address is the opposite problem: write the hall of residence and the room, the enrolment number, and the department, because a name alone on a campus of that size is not an address. In both cases the pin code does the routing and the detail does the delivery.

A carton of locks is small but very heavy. Will I be billed on the weight or on the size?
On the weight, almost always — and this lane is one of the few where that is the case. The rule is that you pay on actual weight or volumetric weight, whichever is greater, with volumetric worked out as (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 5000. For a light, bulky parcel the box wins; for hardware, the scale wins by a distance. A carton of padlocks, mortice sets or solid brass fittings that measures 40 × 30 × 25 cm has a volumetric weight of only 6 kg but can weigh 20 on the scale, so 20 is what bills — at ₹120/kg on surface that is from about ₹2,400 before fuel surcharge and GST, and from about ₹3,600 on express. Two packing points that matter more than the pricing. Use a double-wall carton and strap it in both directions, because dense contents burst thin cardboard corners over 2,050 kilometres. And split a very heavy consignment across two cartons rather than one — it costs the same per kilo, and it survives handling far better.
How should I address a consignment to a workshop in Talanagri or one of the old manufacturing quarters?
Write it the way the trade there does, not the way a postal form suggests. For Talanagri, give the plot or shed number, the registered firm name and the estate name, plus a contact at the stores with a working mobile — industrial units keep a receiving window rather than accepting all day, so tell us the cut-off if you know it and we will schedule the attempt inside it. For the older clusters on the Sasni Gate side and in the lanes around them, the firm’s registered name is often not what anybody there uses: write the proprietor’s name alongside it, name the nearest crossing or landmark, and give a phone that is answered from the shop floor. That combination gets a rider to a door that has no number on it. If you send to the same maker every month, ask us to set a fixed weekday collection at your Bengaluru shop on a contract rate with one monthly invoice — the bulk band opens at 35 kg and holds the same ₹120/kg.
Can I send a parcel to a student at Aligarh Muslim University, and what does the address need?
Yes, and the campus is served like any other part of the city — what changes is the level of detail. AMU is residential and organised around halls with their own hostels and offices, so the address needs the hall of residence, the hostel and room number, the student’s full name as the university has it, and the enrolment number; for a departmental or faculty delivery, name the department too. Add a mobile that is answered during the day, because a student in class will miss the attempt and the parcel then waits for the next working day. On the calendar: term start is the heavy week and worth booking a few days ahead of, and if the parcel contains anything a hostel restricts — a heater, an induction plate — check the rule before you pay freight on it. For books and winter clothing, surface at 5–6 days is the sensible service; for a laptop or documents with a date attached, take express and tell us it is a laptop so the battery is routed correctly.
