Because there is a hill leg waiting at the far end, catching tonight's departure rather than tomorrow's is worth roughly a full day at the top — the mountain road runs on daylight, and a truck that misses a connection at the bottom waits for the next morning's climb.

Up the eastern seaboard into Bengal, north through the Siliguri corridor, east into Assam, and down to Silchar — the point where the plains end and everything for Mizoram transfers onto the hill road. From there it is the long climb south-east into the Lushai hills to reach Aizawl on its ridge at around 1,100 metres. The whole run is 6–8 working days on surface. The express service flies out of Kempegowda to Lengpui, about 32 kilometres from the city on its own ridge, and delivers in 4–5.

The backbone of this route. Mizoram sends an unusually high share of its young people out to study — the state has one of the highest literacy rates in India and a long habit of educating its children away from home — and Bengaluru is one of the main places they come to, alongside a substantial working population in the city's hotels, cafés, salons and retail floors. What goes back to Aizawl is what people send when they are far from home and earning: clothes and shoes, a phone, medicines, things bought here because they are cheaper or simply not sold there, and gifts in the run-up to Christmas, which is comfortably the biggest date of the year in Mizoram and the peak fortnight on this lane.

Community and church life in Mizoram is built around singing, choirs and congregational music to a degree that surprises outsiders, and Bengaluru is a good city to buy instruments and sound equipment in. They need proper treatment on a journey that ends on a mountain road: original retail packaging where possible, a hard case inside a double-wall carton, string tension slackened on a guitar, and every void filled. Medicines and post-treatment follow-up
Families from Mizoram travel a long way for specialist care, and Bengaluru's hospitals see a steady number of them. Once they are home the follow-up moves by courier: sealed prescription medicines with a copy of the prescription in the box, scan films, discharge summaries and reports for a review. This is the clearest case on the whole lane for booking express. A repeat prescription that leaves Bengaluru by road can be eight working days and a mountain leg away from the person waiting for it, and nobody should be rationing tablets to cover a truck journey.

Puan and Mizo handloom coming the other way
The return leg is worth knowing about. Mizo handloom — the puan in its many forms, shawls, stoles and the intricate puanchei work — has a growing market outside the state, and Bengaluru buyers, boutiques and diaspora customers order it directly from weavers in and around Aizawl. Textiles are ideal courier freight: light, unbreakable, unrestricted and easy to pack flat. They are also volumetric almost every time, so a folded consignment in a shallow carton is cheaper to send than the same cloth in a deep one. - Alcohol — and here it is the law as well as the rule. No courier in India moves liquor as a parcel, and on top of that Mizoram is a prohibition state under its own liquor legislation. - Salon and beauty stock sent home by professionals — a genuine pattern on this route, because so many of Bengaluru's Mizo workers are in the hair and beauty trade and send product back for family who run a small salon. Hair colour developer and peroxide, acetone and nail remover, hairspray, mousse and setting sprays are all either flammable liquids or pressurised cans. Combs, shears, clips, capes, dry powders, sealed soaps and packaged tools travel without any issue.
- Fermented and smoked food going down to Bengaluru — worth saying because homesickness is the reason people try it. Smoked pork, dried and fermented fish, fermented pork fat and anything in brine are all classed as perishable meat products, they cannot be booked, and after six days in a warm carton they would ruin everything travelling with them. Dry, factory-sealed and shelf-stable food is fine in both directions.
- Spare lithium cells, power banks and battery packs — small, easy to slip in beside a laptop, and the most common single reason a technology parcel gets opened. Batteries fixed inside the device they power are accepted on the surface service. Loose cells and separate power banks are not carried, and nothing rated above 100 Wh goes on the air leg at all.
- Controlled and unlabelled medication — sealed prescription medicine with the prescription copy travels perfectly well and we send a lot of it. What we cannot take is loose tablets in a strip with no packaging, decanted syrups, or anything on the controlled and scheduled lists. What is different about Aizawl is the shape of the city. It is built along ridges — the roads follow the crest lines and the houses are stacked on the slopes above and below them — so an address is a veng and a house number rather than a street and a number, and the final approach to a great many homes is a flight of concrete steps that no vehicle can use. Riders here routinely park and walk, which works fine for a parcel someone can carry and less well for a 30 kilogram consignment, so for anything heavy the recipient should expect a phone call to arrange either a hand at the door or a collection from the branch. Mizoram is a dry state. What does that actually mean for what I can send?
It means alcohol is out twice over, and it is worth being direct about it. No courier in India accepts liquor as a parcel on any route, so the question would already be settled — but Mizoram also has its own prohibition law, so a bottle arriving there is a problem for the recipient and not only for the consignment. That covers wine, beer, spirits and liqueur chocolates and gift packs that contain real alcohol. What people are usually trying to do is send a gift, so here is what does work: sealed dry food and snacks, coffee and tea, chocolate that contains no liquor, clothes, books, electronics, toys, cosmetics in non-flammable forms, and anything else on the ordinary list. My family's house is below the road, down a flight of steps. Will the rider still deliver it?
Yes, in almost every case — it is how a large part of Aizawl is built and the delivery network there is entirely used to it. The rider parks on the road and walks the steps. Where it needs a conversation is weight and bulk: a 5 or 10 kilogram carton goes down or up the steps without any drama, but a 35 kilogram bulk consignment, a mattress, a large appliance or a boxed instrument is a genuine two-person job on a wet slope. For those the branch will call the recipient and arrange either help at the door or a collection, which is a normal arrangement in the city rather than a refusal. Two things make it smooth: write the veng name and house number the way your family writes them, and put a mobile number on the AWB that will be answered on the day, because the recipient's directions are worth more than any map in a city with this topography.
Nothing moves in Aizawl on a Sunday. How should I count the transit days?
Count them as working days, which is exactly how our 6–8 and 4–5 figures are quoted. Sunday observance in Mizoram is close to total — shops, offices and businesses are shut, and the day belongs to church — so a parcel that reaches the city on a Saturday evening will be delivered on Monday and there is no point planning around anything else. In practice this means a consignment that leaves Bengaluru on a Monday or Tuesday has a much cleaner run at the far end than one booked on a Thursday, which is likely to arrive into a weekend and sit.
